UK cost guide · A level Further Maths · updated October 2026

# How much does a Further Maths tutor cost in the UK in 2026?

**Short answer:** Further Maths tutors are priced at the top of the A level range. On one large marketplace the listings we read ran from about $34 to $99 an hour, against a national A level maths average of about $55. No national survey we found publishes a separate Further Maths average. Our live [Further Maths course](/courses/a-level-further-maths-course) is **$100 a month** in a small group or **$150 a month** one-to-one.

Further Maths is the second maths A level: complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction and more calculus, plus applied options the school chooses. Far fewer tutors teach it than teach A level Maths, and the price reflects that. Below: the published figures we could find, what drives them, and a way to budget for two maths A levels without paying twice for the same foundations.

## The courses behind the price

Further Maths is taught alongside A level Maths, so we price and plan the two together.

## What Further Maths help costs, and what we could not find

Published UK rates, read in October 2026 and converted to US dollars so this page uses one currency. Few sources price Further Maths on its own, so some lines are the nearest published comparison and are labelled that way.

| Format | Typical price | Where the figure comes from |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Further Maths tutor on a large marketplace | listings we read ran from about $34 to $99 an hour | MyTutor, A level Further Maths tutors listing (read 7 October 2026) |
| A level maths tutor, national average (nearest comparison) | about $55 an hour; typical online range $46 to $56 | Tutorful, "How Much Does a Maths Tutor Cost in the UK in 2026?" (updated 24 September 2026) |
| IB maths tutor, another advanced course (comparison) | about $64 an hour | Tutorful, same guide |
| University-level maths tutor (comparison) | about $63 to $70 an hour or more | Tutorful, same guide, degree level |
| Face-to-face tuition, all maths levels | about $55 an hour on average, above $93 an hour in the most expensive areas | Tutorful, same guide, in-person rates |
| Modern Age Coders, live Further Maths | $100 a month in a group of 15 to 20, or $150 a month one-to-one, eight one-hour lessons | Our own price, no enrolment fee |

Conversion: UK figures were converted at 1.3221 US dollars per pound, the Bank of England spot rate for 5 October 2026 (series XUDLUSS), and rounded to the nearest dollar. The national guide gives no separate Further Maths average, so we have not invented one.

Behind the number

## Why Further Maths tuition costs more

### A smaller pool of tutors

Plenty of tutors teach A level Maths. Far fewer are comfortable with complex numbers, matrices, induction and the further calculus in Core Pure, so the ones who are can charge more.

### Options vary by school

Schools choose different applied options, such as further mechanics, further statistics or decision maths. A tutor who knows your school's options is worth more than one who only knows Core Pure.

### Two A levels at once

Most students take Further Maths alongside Maths. Paying two separate tutors means paying twice for the shared foundations; one tutor covering both is usually cheaper overall.

### Exam board papers

AQA, Edexcel and OCR each structure their Further Maths papers differently. Practice on the right board's papers saves lessons.

### Degree-level tutors

Most Further Maths tutors hold or are studying for a maths degree. University-level maths tutoring averages about $63 to $70 an hour in the guide we read, which sets the top of the range.

### Online widens the choice

A Further Maths specialist is unlikely to live round the corner. Online lessons let you choose by subject knowledge rather than postcode, without paying for travel.

Our planning guide

## How to budget for Further Maths alongside A level Maths

What our tutors usually suggest. These are planning numbers, not a promise; the student's practice between lessons decides how far the hours go.

| Situation | Typical plan | Hours |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Catching up on one option, say further statistics | one lesson a week for half a term | about 6 |
| Further Maths alongside Maths, Year 12 | one lesson a week on Further Maths content | about 38 |
| Both maths A levels with one tutor | two lessons a week across Years 12 and 13 | about 150 |
| School does not run Further Maths | two lessons a week across both years, the full course | about 150 |

We count roughly 38 teaching weeks in a school year. This is our own arithmetic.

**The two-tutor trap (our arithmetic):** two separate tutors at the national A level average of about $55 an hour, one lesson a week each, comes to about $4,180 a year. One tutor covering both maths A levels in two weekly lessons with us costs $150 a month one-to-one.

## Questions to ask a Further Maths tutor before paying

- Have they taught Core Pure to the end of Year 13, not just Year 12?
- Which applied options can they teach, and are they the ones your school chose?
- Do they work from your board's Further Maths papers?
- Can the same tutor cover A level Maths, so foundations are not paid for twice?

- Will they set and mark practice between lessons?
- Is there a first lesson you can watch first?
- Are there fees on top of the hourly rate?
- Will they decline to promise a grade? An honest tutor will.

Choosing

## Group or one-to-one for Further Maths?

### A small group suits a student who

- is keeping up at school and wants practice
- enjoys working through hard problems with others
- wants the lower monthly price

Groups hold 15 to 20 students at a similar level.

### One-to-one suits a student who

- takes Further Maths without a school class
- needs both maths A levels timetabled together
- is stuck on one strand, such as matrices or complex numbers

One student, one tutor, their board's papers.

Common questions

## Further Maths tutor costs: questions families ask

How much does a Further Maths tutor cost per hour in the UK?

Further Maths tutors are priced at the top of the A level range. The rates table lists what we could find, with a source for each figure and the exchange rate used.

Is a Further Maths tutor more expensive than an A level Maths tutor?

Usually, because fewer tutors can teach Core Pure and the applied options well. Using one tutor for both maths A levels avoids paying twice for the shared foundations.

What does A level Further Maths cover?

A Core Pure part taken by everyone, including complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction, further calculus and differential equations, plus applied options such as further mechanics, further statistics or decision maths, depending on the board and school.

Can my child take Further Maths if their school does not offer it?

Some students do, studying the course outside school and entering the exams through an exam centre. Our [Further Maths course](/courses/a-level-further-maths-course) covers the full specification for AQA, Edexcel and OCR.

Do I need Further Maths for a maths degree?

Some university courses ask for it or prefer it, others do not. Check each course's published entry requirements; we teach the maths and do not give admissions advice.

How many hours of Further Maths tuition are typical?

Our planning guide: about 38 hours across Year 12 at one lesson a week on Further Maths content, or about 150 hours across both years for both maths A levels at two lessons a week.

Is there a joining fee?

Not with us. There is no enrolment fee and no contract, and you can stop at any month end.

Can we try a lesson first?

Yes. The [first lesson is free](/book-demo?subject=maths) and needs no card. For a class today or tomorrow, [book a Priority Demo](/priority-demo): a full class of about 45 to 60 minutes with a written skill report. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.

Why are prices in US dollars?

We teach families in more than 25 countries and bill outside India in US dollars, so this page shows one currency. UK market figures were converted at one stated exchange rate.
