Rent is 35% of it, bills are £240, and you want to save £150. How much is left for everything else?" It looks like a lot at once — which is where people panic. **How we teach it.** Functional Skills is about handling a real situation one clear step at a time. We list what comes out, work each bit, then subtract from the total: rent = 35% of 1800 = 0.35 × 1800 = £630bills = £240savings = £150total out = 630 + 240 + 150 = £1,020left over = 1800 − 1020 = **£780** There's no abstract algebra — just "work out each amount, add them up, take them away from what you started with." The only real skill is the percentage (35% = 0.35), and once that clicks, every money question on the exam works the same way.
