## Learn why one wrong digit behaves differently from another

Four routes from cutting a number short on paper to writing code whose small errors cancel instead of compounding.

## A wilayat about to start weighing things

Mining turns a quiet place into a place that produces a number every single day, and daily numbers are where one-sided errors do their real work.

### Five pits and one figure a day

The project is planned around five open-pit mines. Five faces, each reporting tonnages, is five streams of decimals a day, and any systematic error is multiplied by every one of them before anybody looks at a monthly total.

### Reserves quoted to one decimal

The ore reserve is given as 22.9 million tons. That trailing nine is worth 100,000 tons on its own. Whether a system keeps it or drops it is not a rounding preference, it is a quantity larger than most quarries produce in a year.

### A start date on the horizon

Operations are anticipated to begin in early 2027, which means the reporting systems are being written now. Decisions about number handling made before the first ton moves are the ones nobody revisits.

Cutting and rounding fail in completely different shapes

Rounding is wrong about half the time in each direction, so a long column of rounding errors mostly cancels. Truncation is wrong in one direction only, every single time, so a long column of truncation errors adds up. The size of the individual mistake is identical. The behaviour of the pile is not.

Verified local facts

## Yanqul facts with a trail behind them

Every claim traced, with what it does and does not cover.

### The largest project of its kind here

The Mazoon Copper Project is described as the largest integrated copper concentrate production project in the Sultanate. Scale matters to this page only because scale is what turns a rounding habit into a material number.

### Twenty square kilometres

The project covers 20 square kilometres. An area given as a round two-digit figure is itself already rounded, which is worth noticing on a page about what happens to digits.

### Five open-pit mines

The project consists of five open-pit mines. This is a count, not a measurement, and it is one of very few numbers here that has no decimal to lose.

### Twenty two point nine million tons

Copper ore reserves are estimated at 22.9 million tons. It is an estimate and it carries a decimal, and the page treats it as both rather than as a hard integer.

### Operations expected in early 2027

The project is anticipated to commence operations in early 2027. Early is a hedge on a year, kept here as a hedge.

### Gold in the same ground

A location is recorded here as the Yanqul gold mine, separately from the copper. Two metals in one wilayat means two reporting streams with different units and different conventions, which is where unit confusion usually begins.

Modern Age Coders has no involvement in the mining project and claims none. Yanqul appears on this page because a place that is about to generate daily tonnages is the clearest possible setting for an error that only accumulates.

Signature project

## Six thousand four hundred tons that were never lost, only dropped

Two ways of shortening a number, one of them harmless over a year and one of them not, and nothing on screen to tell them apart.

### 1. Twelve months of tonnages, each to one decimal

Between roughly 17 and 23 thousand tons a month, as a working mine might report. The monthly figures here are teaching values, since production has not begun, and the page says so wherever they appear.

### 2. Shorten them the way software usually does

Casting to an integer drops the decimal. It does not round. Nearly every language does this, most of them silently, and the result is always less than or equal to the real figure, never more.

### 3. Add the year up both ways

The true total is 246.4. Rounding gives 246.0, which is 0.4 out. Truncating gives 240.0, which is 6.4 out. Same twelve numbers, same twelve small mistakes, and one answer is sixteen times worse than the other.

| Measure | Truncated | Rounded | Why they differ |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Annual total, thousand tons | 240.0 | 246.0 | True figure is 246.4 |
| Error against the truth | minus 6.4 | minus 0.4 | Sixteen times worse |
| Mean error per month | minus 0.53 | minus 0.03 | One drifts, one does not |
| Months where the error was positive | 0 of 12 | 5 of 12 | Truncation only goes down |
| Drift over five years | about minus 30 | still near zero | It grows with the rows |
| Drift over ten years | about minus 60 | still near zero | It never stops growing |

### The mistake is the same size, and only one of them accumulates

Nobody would defend an error of half a ton on a single reading. The point is that rounding makes that same half-ton error and then makes it in the other direction next month, so it goes nowhere. Truncation makes it downward every time, so after ten years of daily figures the books are short by an amount somebody will eventually have to explain. Every figure above was computed before this was written.

Reliable pipeline

## Choose how you shorten a number, and say so in writing

Five habits, none of them slow, and any of them stops the drift.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What it gives you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Decide | State whether you round or truncate | A default nobody chose | A convention a colleague can check |
| Delay | Keep full precision until the last moment | Loss repeated at every intermediate step | One place where precision is lost |
| Direction | Ask whether your error can change sign | A bias mistaken for noise | The difference between drift and scatter |
| Reconcile | Total the rounded figures against the raw ones | A gap that grows quietly for years | A discrepancy caught in month one |
| Type | Never let an integer column receive a decimal silently | A cast doing arithmetic on your behalf | An error at the point of entry |

### For younger learners

Twelve cards with numbers like 18.7, and two piles: one where the part after the point is thrown away and one where it decides which way to go. Counting both piles at the end settles the matter without a computer.

### For teenagers

The twelve monthly figures in Python, summed raw, truncated and rounded, with the per-row error printed beside each. The learner then counts how many truncation errors were positive and finds the answer is none.

### For adults

Rounding policy is written down rather than inherited, precision survives to the reporting layer, and any long-running total is reconciled against its raw source often enough to catch a drift while it is still small.

The project scale, the 20 square kilometres, the five open-pit mines, the 22.9 million ton reserve estimate and the early 2027 date are published. The twelve monthly tonnages are invented for teaching, because the mine has not started, and each place they appear says so. What the exercise shows is a property of how numbers are shortened and holds for any figures at all.

## Live classes in a wilayat whose next decade is already being written

A mining project brings technical work to a place that has not had much of it. The people who will do that work are here now and school-aged.

### Skills arriving before the jobs do

A project due to open in 2027 needs people who can already handle data by then. Teaching that arrives over a connection does not wait for a training centre to be built.

### Nothing is charged for the first lesson

It runs as a full class, with a genuine task and a straight recommendation at the end. We do not take card details to arrange it and we do not ask anyone to decide anything until they have watched us teach.

### Groups held to five to eight

Membership is decided by what a learner can do today and what they are working toward. Where they live is not a factor, and that is not something a room in a town can replicate.

### Private tuition for a narrow target

One teacher, one learner, when there is a fixed examination in the way or a single gap that a shared plan would only be able to detour around.

### Eight lessons in an ordinary month

Two live sessions weekly, at a time agreed once when a learner joins. It is not rebuilt every week around shift patterns and school terms.

### An hour and a half of clock, settled once

That is the gap between Oman and India. Term dates, working hours, examination periods and Ramadan are all raised before a recurring time is written down.

Nothing here looks like an error until somebody adds it up

Each individual month is off by less than a ton, which is nothing. What makes it visible is a teacher asking the learner to add twelve of them, then twenty four, and to say out loud which direction the gap is moving.

FAQ

## Yanqul coding class questions

The place, the method and the commercial terms, answered apart from each other.

### Are the Yanqul mining figures real?

The project scale, the 20 square kilometres, the five open-pit mines, the 22.9 million ton reserve estimate and the early 2027 start are all published. The twelve monthly tonnages used in the project are invented for teaching, because production has not begun, and that is stated wherever they appear.

### Why is truncation worse than rounding if the mistake is the same size?

Because of direction, not size. Rounding is too high about as often as it is too low, so a column of rounding errors largely cancels itself. Truncation is too low every single time, so a column of truncation errors is a running subtraction. Over twelve months here that is sixteen times the error for identical inputs.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Yanqul?

No. No premises are claimed in Yanqul or anywhere in Adh Dhahirah. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### Where does truncation usually creep in?

At a type boundary. A decimal value assigned to an integer column, a cast written to silence a warning, or a display format that shortens a number which is then read back in. In each case nothing is reported, because dropping a decimal is a legal operation and the machine assumes it was intended.

### Do you take adult learners in Yanqul as well as school students?

Yes, up to the age of 67. The adult track runs through Python, databases and reporting. If you keep any long-running ledger, this is the fault most likely to be sitting in it right now. Bring it along, where it is yours to bring, and it becomes the exercise.

### What is a learner left holding when this project finishes?

A written rounding policy, a calculation that keeps its precision until the final step, and a reconciliation that would have caught the drift in the first month. None of that is tied to a language or a tool.

### How much do Yanqul coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Yanqul learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Yanqul class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and travel schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What actually happens in the free Yanqul class?

We establish what the learner wants to be able to do, then set a single task pitched there. Younger children sort number cards into two piles and count both. A teenager sums a column three ways and reports which errors were positive. An adult is asked where in their own system a decimal meets an integer. A course, a format, a time and the USD fee are recommended at the end. The class itself is free.
