Long records are exactly where single summaries get dangerous. ### An estuary that became a lagoon Khor Rori is described as a bar-built estuary: the sea end closed. It was a harbour when it was open. What the site was for before and after that change are two different questions, and one column of numbers can only answer one. ### A port that is now ruins Sumhuram sits on the eastern bank as the ruins of a fortified port city. Ports have traffic and ruins have visitors, and nobody should ever plot those on the same axis without saying so. ### A fishing village that carried on Taqah itself is an old fishing village with a castle, and it continued regardless of what happened to the ancient harbour. Two neighbouring records with two entirely different shapes is the normal situation and the easiest one to merge by accident. A straight line is an answer to a question you did not ask Fitting a line assumes one process running throughout. When the subject changes halfway, the fit still succeeds, still returns a slope and still plots beautifully. It is now the average of two opposite stories, and an average of opposites resembles neither of them. Verified local facts ## Taqah facts with a trail behind them Each claim traced, with what changed and when it changed stated plainly. ### A bar-built estuary Khor Rori is a bar-built estuary, or river mouth lagoon, at the mouth of Wadi Darbat in Dhofar. The bar is the whole point: it is the physical event that ended one use of the site and began another. ### A harbour, in the past tense The site is described as having acted as an important harbour for the frankincense trade when it was an open estuary. The sources put that in the past tense deliberately, and a dataset that flattens tense loses the most important fact in the sentence. ### The ruins of Sumhuram Khor Rori is best known for the ruins of the ancient fortified port city of Sumhuram on the eastern bank. A named city gives the record an anchor that a general description of a coastline never could. ### Nine centuries of recorded activity Activity at the site is recorded from the fourth century BC to the fifth century AD. Nine centuries is long enough for the subject of the record to change without anybody renaming the column. ### A major breeding ground for birds The lagoon is a major breeding ground for birds. That is what the site is now, and it is a use that only became possible once it stopped being a working harbour. ### A castle in the village Taqah is an ancient fishing village, and Taqah Castle stands in it, separate from the archaeological site along the coast. Two attractions in one wilayat means two visitor records, and they are not interchangeable. None of this involves Modern Age Coders and no association is claimed. Taqah is used here because a harbour that physically stopped being a harbour is the clearest example of a break that a trend line will happily ignore. Signature project ## Minus two per century, in a period that rose by nine and fell by eight The arithmetic is correct, the line is correctly fitted, and the number it produces is true of not one of the nine centuries. ### 1. Lay the record out by century Nine buckets running from the fourth century BC to the fifth century AD, with a measure of activity in each. It rises to a peak and then falls away. The century figures are teaching values, since no such series is published, and the page says so. ### 2. Fit one line, because that is what you do with a series A least-squares line across all nine centuries returns a slope of minus 2.08 per century. Reported on its own, that is a slow, mild, unremarkable decline over nine hundred years. ### 3. Fit the two halves separately and compare The first four centuries rise at plus 8.70 per century. The last five fall at minus 8.50. For four of the nine centuries the real movement was strong growth, so the summary has the sign wrong for nearly half the period. For the rest it understates the fall by a factor of four. Nothing in the fit complains, because a line can be drawn through anything. Every figure above was computed before this was written. The child can see the stick touching almost nothing, which is the entire argument, and no screen is needed. ### For teenagers The nine values in Python, with a slope computed over the whole series and over each half. The learner reports all three and then writes the check that the fitted line agrees with the direction between the first two points, and watches it fail. ### For adults Series are plotted before they are summarised, regime changes are dated and recorded alongside the data, and any trend spanning a known break is reported as two figures rather than one. The bar-built estuary, the former role as a frankincense harbour, the ruins of Sumhuram, the bird breeding ground, the castle at Taqah and the recorded span from the fourth century BC to the fifth century AD are published. The nine century activity figures are invented for teaching, because no such series exists, and every place they appear says so. The behaviour of the fit is a property of straight lines and holds for any series with a turning point.
