## Sur connects maritime craft, applied science and industry

The city is not reduced to a generic coastal label. Each statement below is traceable to an Oman government, university or company source.

### Administrative centre of five wilayats

The [South Al Sharqiyah Governorate](https://ssg.gov.om/public/about-south-al-sharqiyah-governorate) lists Sur, Al Kamil Wal Wafi, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, Jalan Bani Bu Ali and Masirah as its five wilayats. It identifies Sur as the governorate's administrative centre.

### Sea, sands and interior boundary

The governorate says South Al Sharqiyah faces the Arabian Sea to the east, meets Al Sharqiyah Sands to the south and adjoins Ad Dakhiliyah to the west. That description explains why a single regional dataset may mix settlements with very different geography.

### A maritime trading history

Oman's [Foreign Ministry regional guide](https://www.fm.gov.om/en/about-oman/state/oman-by-region/) describes South Al Sharqiyah as a centre of maritime trade and fishing for many centuries. It identifies Sur as an ancient city and a continuing centre for traditional boat building.

### Sur extends beyond the urban core

[Oman News Agency](https://omannews.gov.om/mainsections/62) says the wilayat has about 74 population centres. Its account includes the niyabats of Ras Al Hadd and Tiwi, together with Al Aijah and Qalhat, making a Sur service page broader than one neighbourhood.

### Mountains, plains and coasts

The same ONA profile says Sur combines mountain, plain and coastal environments. It names Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi among several wadis and geographic features, useful reminders that location fields need a precise scale and label.

### Major projects named by the governorate

The governorate highlights the liquefied natural gas project, a urea and ammonia fertiliser plant and Sur Industrial Area among major projects. These facts support engineering and data examples, but they do not imply endorsement of Modern Age Coders.

Local evidence is not marketing decoration

Students learn to keep a source URL, publication owner, verification date and exact claim beside every fact. A source about the whole governorate cannot silently become a claim about every household in Sur, and a company fact cannot be rewritten as a government statistic.

Industry and measurement

## Oman LNG publishes quantities with units and scope

Its official pages offer an accessible example of why engineering data needs definitions, not just large numbers.

### Established in February 1994

[Oman LNG's key facts](https://omanlng.co.om/en/OmanLNGInBrief/Pages/key-facts.aspx) says the company was established by Royal Decree in February 1994. The date belongs to company formation, not to every plant asset or production series.

### A Qalhat site near Sur

The company places its operations plant on a 1.4 square kilometre site at Qalhat near Sur. The official corporate brief separately says it operates three liquefaction trains there, so site area and train count describe different aspects of the operation.

### Pipeline dimensions need their units

The key-facts page gives a pipeline length of 360 kilometres and a diameter of 48 inches. A careful data model stores quantity, unit, asset and source date separately instead of putting both numbers into an unlabeled measurement column.

### Flow is not a lifetime total

The same page states a daily feed-gas capacity in cubic metres per day. The phrase per day makes it a rate. Removing the time denominator would change the meaning, just as labelling a cumulative workshop total as a weekly result would.

### Nameplate capacity has a basis

Oman LNG's [corporate brief](https://www.omanlng.co.om/en/OmanLNGInBrief/Pages/oman-lng-in-brief.aspx) describes its train capacity on a per-annum basis. A student should preserve whether a number is design capacity, actual output, an interval total or a cumulative total before comparing it with another value.

### Source dates prevent silent mixing

Corporate pages and later reports can use different scopes or updated capacities. The project therefore records a retrieved-on date and does not blend numbers from separate documents unless their definitions and periods match.

Signature Sur project

## The workshop dashboard whose line can only go up

A synthetic dhow-workshop quality log demonstrates why a cumulative total cannot diagnose the latest week's performance.

### 1. Record each interval

Every row stores the week, pieces inspected, pieces accepted and pieces sent for rework. The learner validates that accepted plus reworked equals inspected before any chart is drawn.

### 2. Calculate the running total

The accepted-to-date column adds each week's accepted count to the previous cumulative value. This number answers how many pieces have been accepted across all recorded weeks.

### 3. Compare the actual rate

The weekly acceptance rate divides accepted by inspected for that same week. It can fall while the accepted-to-date line rises, because a positive increment still increases the lifetime total.

| Week | Inspected | Accepted | Accepted to date | Weekly acceptance rate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | 8 | 6 | 6 | 75% |
| 2 | 10 | 9 | 15 | 90% |
| 3 | 10 | 4 | 19 | 40% |
| 4 | 12 | 11 | 30 | 91.7% |

### Week three is the test

The cumulative line rises from 15 to 19, yet the weekly acceptance rate drops from 90% to 40%. Calling the rising line an improving acceptance rate would reverse the evidence. The cumulative total is valid, but it answers a different question.

All numbers in this table are invented for teaching. They are not records from a named Sur workshop, Oman LNG, the governorate or UTAS-Sur. The maritime context comes from official sources; the learner dataset remains explicitly synthetic.

Metric design

## Every chart title should survive four questions

The debugging process begins with definitions before code or visual styling.

| Question | Cumulative answer | Interval or rate answer | Common failure |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| How much has accumulated? | Latest accepted-to-date value | Not required | Summing cumulative rows again |
| What happened this week? | Difference between adjacent cumulative values | Accepted count for the week | Displaying the lifetime total |
| What share passed inspection? | Not enough by itself | Accepted divided by inspected in the same interval | Leaving out the denominator |
| Is performance improving? | Cannot establish it alone | Compare like-for-like rates with context | Equating an upward cumulative slope with quality |
| Was history corrected? | May change after a backfill | Keep revision and event timestamps | Assuming every update is a new event |

### Differentiate with checks

Adjacent differences reconstruct interval counts only when ordering, resets and revisions are understood. A device reset or backfilled record needs an explicit rule rather than blind subtraction.

### Choose a denominator

Eleven accepted pieces may be strong from twelve inspected and weak from fifty inspected. The denominator and time window are part of the metric, not explanatory footnotes.

### Label the chart honestly

Accepted pieces to date, accepted this week and weekly acceptance percentage are three valid labels for three different series. A vague label such as performance hides the distinction.

The project can scale with the learner

A child builds a visual running counter. A teenager uses Python to compute differences and rates. A university learner writes SQL window functions. An adult adds data contracts, revision handling, automated tests and an accessible dashboard explanation.

Sur learning landscape

## UTAS-Sur links computing with communication and biotechnology

The university's own pages give local learners several credible pathways beyond an introductory coding class.

### A campus history beginning in 1987

[UTAS-Sur](https://www.utas.edu.om/en-us/Branches/Sur) says the campus opened in 1987 as a middle-level college offering a Diploma in Education. It became a College of Education in 1995.

### Applied programmes from 2005 to 2006

The branch says its conversion to a College of Applied Sciences occurred during 2005 to 2006. It then offered industry-oriented programmes including Information Technology, Mass Communication and Applied Biotechnology.

### Part of UTAS since 2020

The university states that Royal Decree 76/2020 created the University of Technology and Applied Sciences. The Sur campus now sits within that public university rather than operating under its former college identity.

### Three award levels in IT and communication

UTAS-Sur lists Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor programmes in Information Technology and Mass Communication. It also lists a Bachelor programme in Applied Biotechnology.

### Named technology majors

The [Sur branch overview](https://www.utas.edu.om/sur/About/About-UTAS-Sur) names Cyber and Information Security and Network Computing within Information Technology. These are specific pathways, not a claim that every local learner studies computing.

### Biotechnology grounded in Sur's setting

The same overview lists marine, environmental, and food biotechnology routes. A coding learner can support these disciplines through data cleaning, reproducible analysis and clear visualisation while respecting scientific supervision.

UTAS-Sur and Modern Age Coders are independent organisations. University facts establish local educational context only. Enrolment in one does not imply credit, admission, certification or endorsement by the other.

Learning ladder

## One measurement idea, four levels of technical depth

The free class selects a starting point through observed work rather than assumptions about age or school label.

## Evidence of reasoning, not a copied chart

A finished project must show how the metric was defined and tested.

### A data dictionary

Each field states its type, unit, time grain and allowed missing values. Cumulative and interval columns cannot share an ambiguous total label.

### Validation tests

Tests confirm accepted values do not exceed inspected values, rates remain between zero and one, and cumulative changes match intervals when no reset or correction exists.

### Two coordinated views

The dashboard shows accepted-to-date for workload and weekly acceptance rate for quality. Captions explain why their shapes should not be interpreted in the same way.

### A source register

Official local facts keep owner, URL and verification date. Synthetic records carry a generated-for-learning label and never inherit the authority of contextual sources.

### An exception note

The learner explains what a reset, backfill or missing week would do to adjacent differences. A strong project defines failure behaviour rather than demonstrating only clean data.

### A verbal defence

The teacher asks why week three worsened although the cumulative line rose. The learner must answer in plain language before the chart is treated as complete.

Live online delivery

## Coding classes for Sur without a claimed local branch

The recurring format, equipment and placement process are stated before a family books.

### Free first class

The teacher reviews the learner's goal and observes a short task before tuition payment.

### Group tuition

Five to eight compatible learners work live with one teacher, ask questions and receive code review.

### Private tuition

One learner works with one teacher when the objective, pace or schedule needs individual attention.

### Normal frequency

Two live lessons each week normally produce eight lessons in a month. A recurring slot is confirmed first.

### Oman and India time

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The small difference supports live teaching without publishing a fixed class time.

### Learner setup

A laptop or desktop, stable internet, working audio and a current browser are needed. A phone alone is not a suitable coding workstation.

Plan around the learner's real calendar

Friday and Saturday options depend on availability. Families should disclose school exam periods, UTAS assessment deadlines, adult work shifts and Ramadan routines before agreeing the recurring time. Modern Age Coders does not promise a slot until it is checked.

Placement decisions

## The right course depends on the next obstacle

Search terms such as Python classes in Sur or coding for kids in Sur describe interest, but they do not determine level.

### Beginners and younger children

A beginner may start with sequencing, loops, coordinates, mental mathematics or Scratch. Reading ability, attention and explanation matter more than an arbitrary age cut-off.

### School learners

A school student may need Python, web development, JavaScript, data science, mathematics or defensive cybersecurity. The course should support rather than crowd out assessed school work.

### University learners

A university learner may bring a database, statistics, networking or programming gap. The teacher checks prerequisites and avoids claiming that external tuition replaces a UTAS module.

### Working adults

An adult may target automation, data analysis, SQL, web development or stronger technical reasoning. Lessons can use work-like problems without requesting confidential employer information.

### Learners with prior code

A portfolio review looks for decomposition, naming, tests, error handling and explanation. Completing a tutorial does not automatically establish independent mastery.

### Learners unsure where to begin

The free class is a diagnostic conversation with a task. It produces a course recommendation, class-format suggestion and checked schedule, not an obligation to enrol.

FAQ

## Questions about coding classes in Sur

These answers separate class facts, local source evidence and the synthetic workshop exercise.

### Who can join coding classes in Sur?

Modern Age Coders teaches learners aged 6 to 67, including beginners, school students, university learners and working adults. Placement depends on present ability and objective rather than age alone. The free first class may use logic, mathematics, typing, debugging, data interpretation or a short coding task to identify a suitable course and format.

### What is the Sur cumulative-data coding project?

The learner builds a synthetic quality-control dashboard for a dhow workshop. Each weekly batch has accepted and reworked items, while a separate column stores the accepted total to date. The task exposes a common error: treating an ever-rising cumulative line as evidence that the weekly acceptance rate is improving.

### Why does a cumulative line usually rise even when performance falls?

A cumulative value adds the latest increment to everything recorded earlier. If the increment is non-negative, the total cannot fall, even when the latest weekly count or acceptance rate is much worse. Performance should be evaluated with interval changes and an appropriate denominator, while the cumulative total answers how much has accumulated overall.

### Are the Sur project records official local data?

No. The workshop rows are synthetic teaching records and are labelled as such. Official sources are used only for contextual facts about Sur, South Al Sharqiyah, UTAS-Sur and Oman LNG. Learners keep source evidence separate from invented practice data so a portfolio cannot misrepresent a classroom exercise as a local statistic.

### Does Modern Age Coders have a physical centre in Sur?

No Sur office or classroom is claimed. Lessons are live online. A learner joins with a laptop or desktop, stable internet, audio and a current browser. The teacher explains, watches the learner work, reviews code and gives feedback synchronously. This page describes service availability for Sur, not a local branch.

### Can UTAS-Sur students use these coding classes?

Yes. A UTAS-Sur student may request help with Python, data analysis, databases, web development, cyber security foundations, algorithms, mathematics or another suitable route, subject to placement and availability. UTAS-Sur and Modern Age Coders are independent organisations. The free class identifies a practical starting project without implying university affiliation.

### How much do coding classes in Sur cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. The course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### How many learners are in a Sur group class?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current skill, pace and objective. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If an appropriate group is not available, the learner can discuss private tuition or wait for a better-matched cohort rather than being placed only by age.

### How are online class times arranged for Sur?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The learner and teacher agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School examinations, university deadlines, adult work and Ramadan routines should be raised before the schedule is confirmed.

### What happens in the free Sur coding class?

The teacher asks about the learner's objective and observes a short ability-matched task. A child may update a visual counter, a teenager may calculate weekly changes from cumulative values, and an experienced learner may design a tested dashboard pipeline. The teacher then explains the suggested course, format, timing and USD fee. No tuition is charged for this first class.

### Ask a question before booking
