The data ## Sixty-nine thousand records of width and height The Tate publishes metadata about its collection, free to reuse, including each work's dimensions. Many people would stop here and announce that art proves the claim. Learners are taught to ask one more question before believing any result: who, or what, is in this data? We could not add a list of Southwark's libraries; the council's libraries page answered our automated reader with an empty challenge, and we never work around such checks. Signature project ## One artist, more than half the data Learners count records by artist, then rerun the test without the largest group. The answer flips. ### 1. Count the makers J. M. W. Turner accounts for 39,389 of the 69,201 records, 56.9%. Most are works on paper accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest in 1856. ### 2. Test again Remove Turner and recompute the shares for the remaining 27,267 works. Then look only at oil paintings on canvas, 3,591 of them. ### 3. Compare honestly Check neighbouring ratios too: is 1.618 special, or just part of a broad hump shared by 1.55 or 1.65? | Ratio | All works except Turner | Oil on canvas only | | --- | --- | --- | | 4:3 | 7.29% | 8.49% | | Square root of 2 | 6.60% | 3.48% | | 3:2 | 6.15% | 5.26% | | 5:4 | 5.56% | 9.64% | | Square | 4.71% | 3.95% | | Golden ratio | 1.89% | 1.87% | Without Turner, the golden ratio falls from first place to near the bottom, behind simple ratios such as 4:3, 3:2 and 5:4. Among oil paintings on canvas, 5:4 and 4:3 lead clearly, and the most common shapes cluster around 1.19 to 1.33. The apparent golden-ratio result came from one enormous group of works on paper in similar proportions, not from a preference shared across artists. It is a textbook case of a dataset dominated by one group, and it shows why the first answer is so often the wrong one. ### Why an AI answer is not enough Ask an AI about the golden ratio in art and you may get a confident paragraph repeating the popular claim. Learners who have tested it on tens of thousands of real works, and seen it collapse when one artist is set aside, have learned something no summary can teach: always check what your data is made of. That habit protects against misleading results in medicine, polling and machine learning, where a model trained on unbalanced data can learn the wrong lesson. What to take away ## Three questions for any surprising result The golden ratio test ends with a checklist learners can use on any claim backed by data. ### Who is in the data? Count by the obvious groups first. If one group is half the data, results for "everyone" are mostly results for that group. ### Compared with what? A share of 8% means little alone. Compare nearby ratios and simpler rivals before calling anything special. ### Does it survive a split? Rerun on a sensible subset, such as oil paintings, and see whether the finding holds. GCSE maths students can follow ratios, percentages and the idea of a biased sample; A-level students can go further with histograms, confidence intervals and formal tests. Every width and height comes from the Tate's openly licensed metadata; the ratios, the group counts and the splits were worked out by us on 25 September 2026. We are not linked to the Tate, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Southwark Council, Historic England, TfL or the ONS. Getting around ## London Bridge, and a desk at home Southwark has some of London's busiest crossings and stations. Our classes need none of them. ### London Bridge TfL's open data lists the Jubilee line, Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink at London Bridge. ### Rotherhithe to Dulwich A learner by the river in Rotherhithe and another in Dulwich can share the same class without a journey. ### A balanced class Groups are built the opposite way to the Tate list: no single member dominates, just five to ten learners at a shared stage. Why should a Southwark teenager learn to test them? Because a claim repeated often enough starts to sound like data, even when it is not. The golden ratio story is everywhere, and AI tools trained on the internet repeat it fluently. A learner who has tested it on 65,833 artworks knows two things most people do not: that it seems to be true on the full dataset, and that the effect disappears once one artist is set aside. That is exactly the kind of skew that trips up machine learning models trained on unbalanced data, and exactly what a thoughtful person can catch. The lesson carries into every field that uses data: count the groups, compare with rivals, split and retest. Machines will keep producing confident answers. People who check what those answers rest on will keep being needed. Southwark has had a picture gallery designed by Sir John Soane for more than two centuries. A learner here who can test a claim about pictures with real data is looking at art the way a scientist would. The 2021 Census counted 307,637 usual residents in the London Borough of Southwark, in ONS table TS001. ### Who designed Dulwich Picture Gallery? Sir John Soane, according to Historic England's list entry, which dates the building to 1811 to 1814 and records its reopening in 1953 after severe Second World War damage. ### Do artists really use the golden ratio?
