It is a number small enough to write down and large enough that nobody recounts it by hand, which is precisely the size at which an off-by-one in a file goes unnoticed for years. ### More than three hundred mosques The wilayat contains more than 300 mosques, which is cited as reflecting the extent of Islamic civilisation and the place's standing within it. Two counts at two different levels, villages and mosques, is already a small dataset with a join in it. ### The gap that splits the Hajar Wadi Samail is among the largest wadis in Oman and the Samail Gap divides the Hajar Mountains into eastern and western subranges. A single geographic feature that defines two others is worth a learner's attention. A file has two kinds of line and only one kind of syntax Nothing in a comma separated file marks the header as different. It is a line of text with commas in it, exactly like every other line. Whether it is a label or a record is a decision the reader makes, and a reader that was never asked makes it by accident. Verified local facts ## Samail facts with a trail behind them Named, dated and counted, with the scope of each claim stated. ### A mosque dated to 627 The Mazin bin Ghadouba Mosque in Samail is described as the oldest mosque in Oman, built by Mazin bin Ghadouba in 627 AD. A single dated building is a fixed point that anything else in a timeline can be measured against. ### The first Muslim in Oman Mazin bin Ghadouba is recorded as the first Muslim in Oman, and his tomb is in the wilayat. A person, a mosque and a tomb are three separate records about one man, and a dataset that merges them has lost the ability to answer questions about any of them. ### Beside the Hajar Mountains Samail sits next to the Hajar range, and the wadi running through it is one of the largest in the country. Mountain and valley records have different collection methods and should never be pooled without a note saying so. ### Counts that live at different levels Fifty five villages and more than three hundred mosques means roughly five or six mosques per village on average, which is an average worth being careful with given that the villages are not the same size. ### An east and a west Because the Samail Gap separates the Hajar into two subranges, records here often carry an eastern or western designation. A field that can hold only one of the two forces a choice that the geography does not require. ### A wadi with a name that travels Samail, Sama'il and Samayil all appear in published sources for the same place. That is the ordinary situation for any Arabic place name in English, and it is the reason an identifier and a display name belong in separate columns. None of the above has any relationship with Modern Age Coders and none is claimed. Samail appears here because a wilayat that publishes exact counts of itself gives a learner something to check an import against. Signature project ## Fifty six villages in a wilayat that has fifty five The extra one is called village. Nobody notices, because the totals are all correct and only the averages moved. ### 1. Write the list out Fifty five rows, one per village, with a count beside each. Above them, one line of column headings, exactly as any spreadsheet would export it. That is 56 lines in the file and 55 villages in the wilayat. ### 2. Read it without saying so A program that loops over every line finds 56 villages. The first is named village and its count is the word mosques, which is not a number, so it is skipped when the totals are added. The total is therefore correct. ### 3. Divide by the wrong number The mosque total is 388 either way. Divided by 55 it is 7.05 per village. Divided by 56 it is 6.93. Sums are unaffected, because the header contributes no number to them. Counts and averages are wrong, because the denominator gained a row the numerator did not. A reviewer who spot checks the total finds nothing at all. Both figures above were computed before this was written. Children count the rows, then are given the heading and asked to count again. The disagreement is the lesson and it happens without a computer. ### For teenagers Python reads the same file twice, with and without the header skipped, and prints both counts and both averages. The learner then writes the assertion that the row count equals 55 and watches it fail on the first version. ### For adults Imports declare their header handling, row counts are reconciled against a known figure before the data is used, and any column that must be numeric refuses a row that is not. The village count, the mosque count, the mosque date and the Samail Gap are published facts. The per-village mosque figures inside the project are teaching values, because no public per-village breakdown exists, and the page says so. The behaviour is a property of file formats, not of these numbers. Samail is recorded as holding 55 villages and towns and more than 300 mosques. The per-village mosque numbers used inside the project are teaching values, because no public per-village breakdown exists to copy, and the page labels them as such. ### Why does the header row survive so long undetected? Because it damages one thing and leaves another intact. The header contributes no number to a total, so every sum stays correct. It does add a row, so every count and every average is wrong.
