Official 2025 estimates show how strongly arrivals concentrate inside the season. ### 442,100 by the end of July An [Oman News Agency report](https://omannews.gov.om/topics/en/80/show/123807/) attributes a preliminary estimate of about 442,100 visitors from 21 June through 31 July 2025 to NCSI. The matched 2024 figure was 413,122. ### 827,115 by 15 August A second [official report](https://omannews.gov.om/topics/en/80/show/124030) gives 827,115 visitors through 15 August 2025 and 810,085 for the same 2024 window. It says 46.5 percent of the 2025 arrivals came during the first fifteen days of August. ### 1,027,255 by the end of August The [end-August release](https://omannews.gov.om/topics/en/128/show/124334) reports 1,027,255 visitors from 21 June through 31 August 2025, compared with 1,006,635 in the matched 2024 period. Cumulative snapshots overlap The August 15 total already includes the June and July visitors. Adding it to the July total double-counts earlier arrivals. Treating both as monthly observations also gives a moving average of cumulative checkpoints rather than a smooth measure of new visitors. Verified Salalah facts ## Tourism, higher education, port operations and heritage Each source adds a different part of the city's identity and a different data definition. ### Air and land are separate channels The end-August 2025 release reports 251,064 visitors arriving by air and 776,191 through land checkpoints. These two counts reconcile to the stated total, which makes them suitable for a quality-control check. ### Airport traffic uses a different period An [Oman Airports report](https://omannews.gov.om/topics/en/128/show/123799) covers 21 June to 3 August 2025 and gives 1,849 flights and 288,110 passengers. That period cannot be compared directly with the end-August visitor window. ### Dhofar University began in 2004 [Dhofar University](https://www.du.edu.om/programs-and-degrees-offered/) says it was established by ministerial decree in January 2004 and began formal operations that September. It lists four colleges and 56 academic programmes. ### Computing and cybersecurity routes The same university page lists diplomas and bachelor's degrees in Computer Science, a teaching degree in Information Technology, a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and engineering programmes including Computer and Communications Engineering. ### A port operating since 1998 [Asyad](https://www.asyad.om/ports/salalah-port) says Salalah Port has operated since 1998. It lists seven container berths, twelve general-cargo berths, two liquid-jetty berths and draft up to eighteen metres. ### Heritage inside the seasonal offer The [Ministry of Heritage and Tourism](https://mht.gov.om/media-center/news/khareef-season-in-dhofar-attracted-1-048-000-visitors-in-2024/) names Al Baleed, Samharam and the Land of Frankincense Museum among Dhofar's UNESCO-linked heritage attractions and describes Khareef's cloudy, rainy and moderate conditions. Dhofar University, the tourism ministry, Oman Airports, the port and Modern Age Coders are independent. Their pages provide context and public data, not endorsements. Signature project ## The moving average of an ever-growing total A smooth line can remain conceptually wrong. The learner first repairs the time series, then decides whether smoothing answers anything useful. ### 1. Reproduce the mistake The notebook treats the three 2025 cumulative checkpoints as separate period counts and calculates a three-point moving average. Because each total includes the earlier windows, the result double-counts the season and mechanically rises. ### 2. Derive non-overlapping intervals The learner subtracts consecutive cumulative totals. Visitors from 1 to 15 August equal 827,115 minus 442,100, or 385,015. Visitors from 16 to 31 August equal 1,027,255 minus 827,115, or 200,140. ### 3. Align days and seasons The intervals cover different numbers of days. The report cites the original releases, shows the subtraction and retains the preliminary label. The project does not fabricate Salalah visitor counts. It uses the three official cumulative estimates and transparent derived values. Any simulated complete-year series used to test code is stored separately and labelled synthetic. Another Salalah time series ## Port metrics also require period and definition Salalah Port shows why scale facts should not be mistaken for time-series observations. ### More than 2,500 vessel calls Asyad states more than 2,500 calls each year. That is an annual frequency description, not a monthly count to paste into the Khareef visitor table. ### Quays and berths are capacity facts The port page describes a 2.4-kilometre container-berth quay and a general-cargo quay longer than three kilometres. These dimensions are static infrastructure context. ### One city, separate systems Visitor estimates, airport passengers, port vessel calls and university enrolment each have different populations. A city dashboard must not treat them as interchangeable signals.
