A place where the boats are counted every day generates exactly the kind of small daily numbers this page is about. ### Small landings along the same shore The wilayat's coast carries settlements far smaller than the town, including the Dabab area where the Bimmah Sinkhole lies. Put a three boat landing and a town fleet in the same table and one column of that table stops meaning anything. ### A history of standing against a fleet The town's past is marked by fierce resistance to Portuguese invasion. That is a piece of history worth knowing here for its own sake, and a reminder that a place's size and its significance are two separate measurements. Verified local facts ## Qurayyat detail with a trail behind it Located, measured and described, with the scope of each claim stated. ### A sinkhole with a measured depth The Bimmah Sinkhole lies in the Dabab area of Wilayat Qurayyat, around 600 metres inland from the coast, and is described as a pool roughly 65 feet deep. Geologists have confirmed it is a sinkhole; local legend holds that a meteorite made it. ### Fresh and salt water in the same pool The sinkhole holds fresh and salt water in roughly equal proportions, which is what gives it its turquoise colour. Two things mixed in one measurement is a good physical model for what a single averaged figure does to two populations. ### A legend and a finding, side by side The meteorite story and the geological confirmation coexist locally. A dataset that has room for both, with the source of each, is more useful than one that silently keeps only the confirmed version. ### Part of Muscat Governorate Qurayyat is one of the six wilayats of Muscat Governorate, alongside Muscat, Muttrah, Seeb, Bawshar and Al Amarat. Being counted inside the capital governorate while sitting well outside the city is its own kind of attribution problem. ### Turquoise water and a coastal road The coast draws visitors as well as supporting fishing, so demand here has two shapes laid over each other. Two audiences on one shoreline is two series that should not be summed without saying so. ### A quiet town with a busy past The description of Qurayyat as a quiet fishing village today sits beside its record of resistance. A place changes, and any figure about it needs the year attached before it means anything at all. Nothing above implies a relationship with Modern Age Coders and none exists. Qurayyat is used because a coast with harbours of hugely different size makes the small numbers problem visible without any need to invent a scenario. Signature project ## One boat at Daghmar beats sixty at the town Four landing points, one percentage column, and a ranking that rewards being small rather than being busy. ### 1. Count the boats honestly Four landing points along the same coast: three boats, four, five, and a town fleet of a hundred and eighty. The learner records the counts, not the percentages, because a percentage has already thrown away the thing that matters. ### 2. Add one boat everywhere and compute the change One extra boat is a 33.3 per cent rise at the three boat landing, 25 per cent at the four, 20 per cent at the five, and 0.6 per cent at the town. Every figure is correct and the column is now useless as a ranking. ### 3. Work out what the town would need For Qurayyat town to post the same 33 per cent it would need about sixty more boats. The small landing did it with one. What is wrong is using them to rank. A percentage change measures movement relative to a base, so places with tiny bases will always crowd the top and the bottom of any such table, and they will swap places again next month for reasons that mean nothing. The learner explains why the two orders differ and which one they would put in front of somebody making a decision. ### For adults Rates carry their denominator into every report, rankings apply a documented floor, and places below the floor are banded together rather than listed individually with numbers that will not repeat.
