## Learn to add up a hierarchy without adding it twice

Four routes from noticing you counted something twice to writing totals that cannot include their own parents.

## One source, two channels, a whole wilayat

Everything cultivated here depends on a single spring that becomes two channels a few hundred metres downhill. That is a hierarchy, and hierarchies are what totals get wrong.

### Water that arrives warm all year

The springs gush year round rather than seasonally, which means the wilayat has a quantity worth measuring rather than merely worth waiting for. A stable quantity is one somebody will eventually build a report on.

### A fort in a palm oasis

Nakhal Fort stands in a date palm oasis against mountains, and the oasis exists because of the channels. Cause and consequence recorded as two rows in the same table is the beginning of a lot of trouble.

### Fields fed by named channels

The cultivated land is irrigated by the spring and its tributaries by name. Naming each part is good practice and it is also precisely what makes each part look like an independent thing worth adding to the others.

A parent and its children in one column look like three siblings

Nothing in a flat table records that Falaj Kabbah is part of what the spring produces rather than something alongside it. Three rows, three names, three numbers. The relationship exists in the landscape and not in the file, and a sum cannot see landscapes.

Verified local facts

## Nakhal facts with a trail behind them

Each claim traced, with the limits of each written beside it.

### Springs from a named mountain

The Al Thowarah hot springs are described as gushing all year round from Silud Mountain. A single named origin is what makes the double counting here so easy to see once somebody looks, and so invisible until they do.

### Three hundred metres, then a fork

The water flows from the valley for about 300 metres before branching into two tributaries. The distance matters because it is where the loss happens, and the loss is why the error does not come out as a suspiciously round doubling.

### Two channels with names

The branches are Falaj Kabbah and Falaj As Sarooj. Two named children of one named parent is the smallest complete hierarchy there is, and it behaves exactly like a large one.

### The wilayat depends on it

Nakhal is described as depending on this spring and its tributaries to irrigate its cultivated lands. Where a whole wilayat rests on one measurement, getting the measurement right stops being an academic matter.

### A fort among the palms

Nakhal Fort sits in a date palm oasis with mountains behind it. The setting is the visible output of the water, which is another way of saying the two records are not independent.

### Water people come to sit in

The hot springs draw visitors for the warmth and the minerals. Visitor counts and water measurements are different records about the same resource and should never be joined without saying why.

None of this is a claim about Modern Age Coders and no connection is implied. Nakhal is here because one spring splitting into two named channels is the clearest small hierarchy a learner can hold in their head.

Signature project

## One hundred and seventeen litres of water that does not exist

Each of the three rows is true. The total is 95 per cent too high, and it is not exactly double, which is why nobody catches it.

### 1. Measure in three sensible places

At the spring, and again in each channel after the fork. Sixty litres a second leaving the mountain, thirty three in one channel and twenty four in the other, with three lost along the way. Every one of those readings is a real thing somebody could go and take. The flow figures here are teaching values, because no published gauging exists, and the page says so.

### 2. Put them in one table and total the column

Three rows, one number each, one sum at the bottom: 117 litres a second. The table is tidy, the arithmetic is right and the answer describes roughly twice the water that actually leaves Silud Mountain.

### 3. Run the sanity check that would have saved you

Somebody suspicious asks whether the total is exactly double, because that is what double counting usually looks like. It is not. It is 117 against 120, because of the three litres lost over the 300 metres. The check passes and the report goes out.

| What is summed | Result | Is it correct? | What it actually answers |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Spring row only | 60.0 l/s | Yes | What leaves the mountain |
| Both tributary rows | 57.0 l/s | Yes | What reaches the fields |
| All three rows | 117.0 l/s | No, 95% too high | Nothing at all |
| Exactly double 60? | 120.0 l/s | The total is 117 | Why the check passes |
| Average of the three rows | 39.0 l/s | No | Three rows are not three channels |
| Loss between source and fork | 3.0 l/s | Yes | Why 117 does not look wrong |

### The loss is what makes the double count invisible

If nothing were lost the total would be exactly twice the spring, and a careful reader might spot it. Three litres soaking away over 300 metres turns a suspicious 120 into an unremarkable 117. The one heuristic people actually use for this error is defeated by the most ordinary physical fact about the place. Every figure above was computed before this was written.

Reliable pipeline

## Say which rows are parents, and never total across levels

Five habits that cost nothing and each one closes this on its own.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What it gives you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Level | Give every row a level, source or branch | A parent summed alongside its children | A table that knows its own shape |
| Restrict | Total one level at a time | A sum spanning two levels of a tree | A figure that answers one question |
| Reconcile | Check the children against the parent | A split that silently gains or loses water | The loss quantified instead of hidden |
| Label | Name what the total measures, in words | A number with no question attached | A heading somebody can disagree with |
| Distrust | Treat any total near a multiple of a row as suspect | Double counting that hides behind a loss | A prompt to look, not a proof |

### For younger learners

A jug of water poured into two cups, then all three vessels lined up and the child asked how much water there is. Pointing at the empty jug is the moment the idea lands, and it needs nothing but a table and a towel.

### For teenagers

The three flow figures in Python, summed at each level and across all of them, with the exactly-double check printed alongside. The learner writes the reconciliation that the branches plus the loss must equal the source, and watches it hold.

### For adults

Rows carry a level, totals are computed within a level rather than across the table, and any roll-up reconciles children against parent before it is allowed to be reported.

The springs, Silud Mountain, the roughly 300 metre run, the two named tributaries and the wilayat's dependence on them are published. The flow rates in litres per second are teaching values, because no public gauging figures were found, and they are labelled as such in the project, in this note and in the FAQ. The behaviour is a property of hierarchies, not of these numbers.

Learning ladder

## From a jug and two cups to a roll-up that reconciles itself

A single free class is usually enough to place a learner honestly on this ladder.

Ages 6 to 10

### The same water, counted twice

Children see a whole and its parts and learn not to add both.

## Live classes in a wilayat built around one valley

Nakhal's settlement follows the water, which means it follows the channels, which means it does not gather conveniently around any one point.

### Settlement follows the channels

Where the falaj goes, the fields and the houses go. A shape drawn by irrigation is not a shape with a natural middle, and a lesson that travels down a connection does not need one.

### The opening lesson is free, in full

A real class with a real task, ending in a named recommendation. No payment details are taken to arrange it and nothing is committed to before a teacher has been watched at work.

### Five to eight, matched on what they can do

Groups are built from present ability and intended destination. Location is not part of the matching, which is the one thing proximity can never provide.

### One to one where the target is narrow

A single learner with a single teacher, for a dated examination or a specific weakness that a shared syllabus would have to route around.

### Eight lessons in a typical month

Two live sessions weekly at a slot agreed once, at enrolment, instead of rebuilt every week around school, work and the season.

### Ninety minutes behind the teacher

That is the whole of the time difference between Oman and India, and it is dealt with once. School terms, shifts, examination seasons and Ramadan all go into the conversation before a slot is written down.

Three correct rows and one wrong answer needs a person to unpick

Every row a learner can check individually is right, so checking rows finds nothing. What breaks it open is a teacher asking which of these three numbers is made out of the other two, and then waiting while the learner works out that one of them is.

FAQ

## Nakhal coding class questions

Local facts, teaching method and terms of service, kept apart.

### Are the Nakhal water figures real?

The springs, Silud Mountain, the roughly 300 metre run and the two named tributaries Falaj Kabbah and Falaj As Sarooj are all published, as is the wilayat's dependence on them for irrigation. The litres per second are teaching values, because no public gauging figures were found, and they are labelled as such everywhere they appear.

### Why does the three litre loss matter so much?

Because it defeats the only check most people run. Double counting normally shows up as a total that is exactly twice something, and a reader who knows that will look for it. A small, entirely ordinary loss between the source and the fork turns a suspicious 120 into a forgettable 117, and the report goes out.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Nakhal?

No. No premises are claimed in Nakhal or anywhere in Al Batinah South. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### How do you total a table like this correctly?

Tag every row with its level, then total one level at a time. Sum the branches to learn what reaches the fields, or read the source row to learn what leaves the mountain. Both are useful. The sum of all three rows answers no question anybody has.

### Can an adult in Nakhal study rather than a school student?

Yes, anyone up to 67. The adult routes run through Python, databases and reporting. If you have ever signed off a figure where a regional subtotal had crept into the national line, this project is a description of your own week. Bring that spreadsheet, if it is yours to share, and it becomes the exercise.

### What does a learner have at the end of this project?

A table where every row declares its level, a total that refuses to cross levels, and a reconciliation that proves the parts and the whole agree once the loss is accounted for. That transfers to every reporting tool they will ever use.

### How much do Nakhal coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Nakhal learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Nakhal class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and travel schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What happens in the free Nakhal class?

The teacher establishes what the learner is trying to become able to do and sets one task pitched there. A child pours a jug into two cups and is asked how much water is on the table, a teenager totals the same three rows three ways, and an adult is asked which figure in one of their own reports is made out of the others. The teacher then recommends a course, a format and a time, and states the USD fee. That class is free.
