On ground that flat, a small rise or fall in water covers or uncovers an enormous area, which is what makes the variation so large here and so small elsewhere. ### Birds that arrive on their own timetable Barr Al Hikman is a haven to nearly half a million waterbirds in winter. A count taken in July and a count taken in January are both honest and describe different things, and neither is the number of birds. ### Bounded by four different waters The peninsula borders the sands to the north, the Masirah Channel to the east, the Gulf of Masirah to the south and Hashish Bay to the southwest. Four boundaries described by four names is four chances for two datasets to draw the edge differently. Some quantities are a function, not a value The area of an intertidal flat is not a fact you look up. It is a curve over time. Recording it as a single number does not simplify the truth, it discards the only part of the truth that made the number meaningful. Verified local facts ## Mahout facts with a trail behind them Each claim traced, with the moment it describes stated where it matters. ### One of the region's great coastal wetlands Barr Al Hikman is described as one of the most prominent coastal wetland regions in the Middle East. Prominence is a judgement; the coastline figure beside it is a measurement, and the page keeps them apart. ### Over a hundred and sixty kilometres of coast The published coastline is over 160 km. The word over makes it a lower bound and it is kept as one here rather than treated as a total. ### An inland sabkha behind it The coast is bordered by an inland sabkha, a supratidal flat where evaporite minerals accumulate under an arid climate. Sabkha is exactly the ground that floods and dries, which is why the area question has no fixed answer. ### Nearly half a million waterbirds The site holds nearly half a million waterbirds in winter. Both the hedge and the season belong to the source and both are kept, because a bird count without a date is not a bird count. ### A peninsula with named edges Barr al Hikman is a peninsula in the northeast of Al Wusta Governorate, bounded by the sands, the Masirah Channel, the Gulf of Masirah and Hashish Bay. Named edges make a boundary arguable in a way coordinates would not. ### A beach people actually go to Hufnat Beach in Mahout is written about as a destination in its own right. A wilayat that is famous for a wetland also has an ordinary life, and the two produce different kinds of record. None of the above involves Modern Age Coders and no association is claimed. Mahout is used here because an intertidal flat is the least ambiguous example there is of a quantity that genuinely has no single value. Signature project ## One hundred and forty square kilometres, or five hundred and twenty The same place, the same week, the same method. Only the hour is different, and the answer changes by a factor of nearly four. ### 1. Measure the exposed flat every hour Thirteen readings across one tidal cycle. The areas here are teaching values, since no hourly survey is published, but the behaviour is the ordinary behaviour of a tidal flat and the page says so. ### 2. Look at what the readings do The exposed area runs from 140 square kilometres at the top of the tide to 520 at the bottom. That is a ratio of 3.7. Every one of the thirteen readings is correct at the moment it was taken. ### 3. Try to summarise it with one number The mean across the cycle is 315 square kilometres. The flat is at that state in none of the thirteen hours. The mean is true at no point in the cycle at all. It is nonetheless the figure most likely to be published, because it sounds balanced and it hides the one fact a reader needed, which is that the question was incomplete. Every figure above was computed before this was written. The child is then asked how big the wet part is. The argument that follows is the whole lesson, and there is no screen in it. ### For teenagers The thirteen hourly areas in Python, printing minimum, maximum, mean and the count of readings equal to the mean. The learner writes the check that refuses to report an average when no observation lies near it. ### For adults Timestamps are mandatory on measurements, comparisons are restricted to matching conditions, and any quantity that varies on a cycle is reported as a range with its phase named rather than as a single figure. The coastline of over 160 km, the inland sabkha, the winter waterbird figure, the named boundaries and Hufnat Beach are published. The thirteen hourly areas are teaching values, because no hourly survey was found, and that is stated in the project steps, here and in the FAQ. The behaviour is the ordinary behaviour of intertidal ground and does not depend on these particular numbers. Terms, working hours, examination periods and Ramadan all come up before a time is confirmed. Both answers are right, which is why a person has to intervene A learner who reports 140 is correct and a learner who reports 520 is correct. Neither has made a mistake to find. What moves them on is a teacher asking both of them what time they took the reading, and letting them work out that the question was never finished. The coastline of over 160 km, the inland sabkha, the named boundaries and the nearly half a million waterbirds in winter are all published. The thirteen hourly areas in the project are teaching values, because no hourly survey was found, and the page says so wherever they appear. ### Why is the average the worst single answer here? Because the minimum is genuinely true at high water and the maximum is genuinely true at low water, so each describes a real moment. The mean describes no moment in the cycle at all.
