# In Kuwait the marks start counting in Grade 10, so the timing matters

The short answer

Kuwait's general secondary certificate, the Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama, is cumulative. Grade 10 contributes 10 per cent of the final mark, Grade 11 contributes 20 per cent and Grade 12 contributes 70 per cent. ## Four sensible starting points, not one course for everybody

## A three-year certificate, weighted 10, 20 and 70

Kuwait's school system runs in three stages and the last one is not a single examination year.

State education in Kuwait is organised as five years of primary covering Grades 1 to 5, four years of intermediate covering Grades 6 to 9, and three years of secondary covering Grades 10 to 12. Schooling is compulsory from age 6 to age 14, which is to say through the end of the intermediate stage. The Ministry of Education supervises secondary education in both government and private schools.

At the end of Grade 12 a student is awarded the **Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-A'ama**, the general secondary education certificate. From Grade 11 onward learners choose between a Science and an Arts specialisation, with religious and special education routes also available.

The part most families outside the system do not expect

The final certificate mark is not decided in one year. It accumulates: **Grade 10 carries 10 per cent, Grade 11 carries 20 per cent and Grade 12 carries 70 per cent**. A Grade 10 student who thinks the serious years start later has already begun contributing to the number that follows them to university admissions.

Read the other way round, that weighting is good news for anyone deciding when to add a skill. Ninety per cent of the certificate is still open at the start of Grade 11, and Grade 10 is the cheapest year in the whole sequence to spend two evenings a week on something that is not revision. By Grade 12, when 70 per cent of the mark is live, adding anything is expensive. That is the argument for starting early, and it is a structural argument rather than a sales one.

It also changes what an honest provider should say about workload. We publish two lessons a week as the normal pattern. For a Grade 12 learner in Kuwait, the sensible pattern is fewer, and telling a family that in advance is worth more than promising them that everything fits.

Who we are usually teaching

## Indian schools in Kuwait run the syllabus we teach every day

A large part of our Kuwait intake is not translating between two systems at all.

Kuwait has a well established group of Indian schools running the CBSE curriculum, among them Bhavans and the Indian Educational School, alongside the American, British and Kuwaiti national systems. For a family on CBSE, the practical consequence is specific: the Class 9 to 12 computer science sequence, the vocabulary and the way questions are phrased are the same ones Modern Age Coders teaches in India every day.

That matters more than it sounds. A learner working with a teacher who knows the board does not spend the first month explaining what their school expects. It also means a Kuwait-based CBSE student and a student in Kolkata can sit in the same group without either being held back, which is why a small country does not limit the group a learner can be placed into.

### On the Kuwaiti national route

The certificate weighting above decides the schedule. The coursework is ours, the credit stays the school's.

### On British or American systems

Placement follows the observed level in the free class, not the label on the previous course.

## What Kuwait's system asks for, and which course answers it

Left is the requirement as the system states it. Right is what we would actually teach against it.

Grade 10, 10 per cent

The first tranche of the certificate opens. Marks begin accumulating while most families still treat the year as preparation.

This is the year to build the foundation. Blocks to Python, or a mathematics gap closed properly, while the cost of the time is lowest.

Grade 11, 20 per cent

The Science or Arts specialisation begins and the weighting doubles.

Python and data work for a Science stream learner; spreadsheets, statistics and clear reporting for an Arts stream one.

Grade 12, 70 per cent

Most of the certificate is decided here.

Reduce, do not add. One lesson a week or a deliberate pause. We would rather say that than sell a full schedule into an examination year.

Compulsory to age 14

Primary and intermediate schooling is compulsory from 6 to 14, so the intermediate years are where habits set.

Grades 6 to 9 are where logic, decomposition and debugging are actually learnable without exam pressure. This is the best window in the whole system.

CBSE, Classes 9 to 12

A separate board, a separate computer science sequence, run inside Kuwait.

Taught directly. The same syllabus our teachers cover in India, so the learner joins an existing group rather than a special case.

## A course ladder that leaves room for school

The progression begins with making and explaining. It becomes more technical only when the learner can debug without being rescued at every step. For a Kuwaiti learner the ladder is read against the certificate: wide in Grade 10, narrower in Grade 11, deliberately thin in Grade 12. Adults enter at the point their goal and prior knowledge support.

## Counting the terms left before the weighting bites

Every market page here has one analytical trap the class actually works through. Kuwait's is the one that has broken more real software than any exotic statistical error.

The task looks trivial. A learner is asked to write a small program that answers a question a Kuwaiti family genuinely asks: how many school terms are left before the next tranche of the certificate closes? Grade 10 opens the 10 per cent. Grade 11 doubles it. Grade 12 decides the rest. Given a learner's current grade and term, count what remains.

Almost every first attempt is wrong by exactly one, and it is wrong in a way that still looks right.

The trap

Inclusive ranges, and the fence that needs one more post than it has panels

Ask how many terms from the start of Grade 10 to the end of Grade 12 and the instinct is to subtract: 12 minus 10 is 2, times three terms, gives 6. The real answer counts both ends, so it is 3 years, not 2, and 9 terms. Subtracting two boundary numbers gives you the gaps between them, never the things themselves.

It is the same error as building a straight fence with ten panels and ordering ten posts. You need eleven. Programmers meet it as the off-by-one: a loop that runs one time too few, a range that quietly drops its last element, a report that is short by a single row and therefore never questioned.

What makes it a good first lesson in checking is that the wrong answer is plausible. Six terms is not absurd. Nobody notices it the way they would notice six hundred. The learner only finds it by doing the thing the class is really about: testing the smallest case by hand. How many terms from the start of Grade 12 to the end of Grade 12? If your formula says zero, it is broken, and now you know before it matters.

From there the work gets real. The learner writes the test first, decides whether a range should be inclusive at both ends and documents which, then discovers that the answer also depends on where in the term you ask. Every figure in the classroom exercise is the learner's own; the certificate weighting is the only fact taken from the system, and it is stated above with its source.

The question parents ask first

## Does coding still matter when AI can write it?

It is the fair question and it deserves a specific answer rather than reassurance.

Ask an AI to count the terms between Grade 10 and Grade 12 and it will hand you a confident, well-formatted, plausible answer. Sometimes it will be nine. Sometimes it will be six. It will not tell you which, and it will not sound less certain when it is wrong. The bottleneck was never typing the loop. It is knowing that an inclusive range needs checking, testing the smallest case by hand, and being unwilling to publish a number you have not verified.

That is what the project above trains, and it is why we teach logic before syntax. A learner who has personally been wrong by one, found it, and fixed it will check the machine's arithmetic for the rest of their life. A learner who has only ever accepted a generated answer has no reason to.
