## Khasab is the centre of Oman's northernmost governorate

Administrative, coastal and mountain facts establish why projection and geographic scale matter here.

### Four Musandam wilayats

The [Governorates System](https://bur.gov.om/assets/pdf/en/governorate-system.pdf) lists Khasab, Dibba, Bukha and Madha in Musandam and identifies Khasab as the governorate centre.

### Government administration in Khasab

The current [Musandam government portal](https://gov.om/en/musandam-governorate) locates the governorate office in Khasab and lists the wali offices separately. It publishes Sunday-through-Thursday business hours.

### Facing the Strait of Hormuz

Oman's [Foreign Ministry regional guide](https://www.fm.gov.om/en/about-oman/state/oman-by-region/) places Musandam in the far north, facing the Strait of Hormuz, and identifies Khasab as its main town.

### Separated from the rest of Oman

The Foreign Ministry says a strip of United Arab Emirates land separates Musandam from the rest of Oman. Routing and distance tools therefore need network and border context, not only a straight line on a map.

### Approximately 1,800 square kilometres

The same guide gives Musandam's approximate area as 1,800 square kilometres. That governorate-wide figure cannot be assigned to Khasab city or wilayat without a separate source.

### Mountain and marine geography

Oman's Ministry of Health describes Musandam as a border governorate with mountainous and marine geography. A flat map is useful for navigation display, but it does not preserve every distance, direction, shape and area simultaneously.

Map scale is not a decorative footer

A map can be visually familiar and mathematically unsuitable for an area calculation. The learner records coordinate reference system, units, geographic extent and measurement method before comparing polygons.

Khasab detail

## One wilayat contains mountains, islands, khors and many settlements

Oman News Agency's profile provides named features instead of generic coastal description.

### Sea on two sides of the description

[Oman News Agency](https://omannews.gov.om/mainsections/29) says Khasab lies in northern Musandam, overlooking the Sea of Oman to the east and the Arabian Gulf to the northwest.

### Mountains on three sides

The ONA profile says mountains surround Khasab on three sides. Elevation and relief affect route distance, visibility and field access even when a plan view looks short.

### About 208 population centres

ONA reports about 208 population centres and names Khasab, Qada, Al Harf, Mazar and Lima among them. A Khasab service-area label therefore should not imply one compact settlement.

### Jebel Harim as a named landmark

The profile identifies Jebel Harim among natural landmarks. A terrain layer and a political boundary layer answer different questions and require different data sources.

### Several named islands

ONA lists Musandam, Umm Al Ghanam, Umm Al Tayr, Salama and other islands. An island outline crossing the map edge must be handled carefully before measuring area.

### Several named khors

Khor Sham, Khor Al Need, Khor Hablain, Khor Ghab and Khor Koba appear in the official profile. Coastline complexity makes low-resolution polygons especially unsuitable for precise area or distance work.

Khasab Fort

## A square castle still needs more than a screen measurement

Official tourism details provide a small-scale geometry example without turning heritage into invented boundary data.

### Early seventeenth-century origin

[Experience Oman](https://experienceoman.om/destinations/musandam/khasab-fort) dates Khasab Castle to the beginning of the seventeenth century during the reign of Imam Nasir bin Murshid Al Ya'rubi.

### Coastal strategic position

The tourism portal says the castle stands on the Khasab coast overlooking the Strait of Hormuz and Arabian Gulf. This describes setting, not a survey coordinate.

### A square plan with four corner towers

The source describes a square castle with four corner towers, two floors and a single main entrance. A drawing of that shape can preserve neither exact scale nor cadastral authority unless the document states both.

### A large central tower

Inside the walls is a massive central tower once used for cannons, as well as a rectangular bait al-qufl and a palm-frond summer house.

### Several construction materials

Experience Oman lists mud, gravel and sarooj as construction materials. These facts belong in heritage description rather than a map-area formula.

### Multiple later uses

The castle served as a governor's residence, soldiers' housing, a court and a judge's office. A single feature can change function over time while its footprint remains similar.

Higher education

## UTAS-Musandam opened in Khasab in 2024

The branch creates a current local pathway for computing and applied study.

### Opened in January 2024

The [UTAS-Musandam branch page](https://www.utas.edu.om/musandam/About/About-UTAS-Musandam) says it officially opened its doors in January 2024 in the Wilayat of Khasab.

### An initial cohort of 150

The university says the branch began with 150 students. That is an initial-cohort fact, not a current-enrolment claim and should retain its date label.

### Three initial programme areas

The page lists Economics and Business Administration, Information and Computer Technology, and Educational Studies among its programme areas.

### A temporary Khasab facility

UTAS says the branch currently operates from a temporary facility in Khasab while investing in its main campus. Modern Age Coders does not claim access to or affiliation with either facility.

### Computing department visible today

The [current branch homepage](https://www.utas.edu.om/musandam) lists Computing and Information Sciences alongside Economics and Business Administration, Engineering and Technology, Educational and Human Studies, and preparatory studies.

### Local technical routes

Oman's official higher-education directory lists cloud computing and web and mobile technologies for the Musandam branch. External lessons may support foundational skills but do not grant university credit.

UTAS-Musandam and Modern Age Coders are independent organisations. The university facts establish local education context and do not imply a partnership, referral arrangement, admission path or endorsement.

Signature Khasab project

## The equal-looking map tiles that cover unequal ground

A synthetic comparison demonstrates Web Mercator area inflation without claiming official Khasab boundaries.

### 1. Draw equal projected squares

The learner creates three synthetic squares with projected area of 100 square kilometres in Web Mercator, centred at zero, 26 and 45 degrees north.

### 2. Calculate distortion

In the spherical approximation, Web Mercator area scale is one divided by cosine squared of latitude. Distortion grows as latitude moves away from the equator.

### 3. Change measurement method

The analysis transforms valid geometry to an appropriate equal-area system or computes geodesic area on an ellipsoid, then records the method and units.

| Tile centre | Projected display area | Approximate area inflation factor | Approximate ground area represented | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0 degrees | 100 km² | 1.000 | 100.0 km² | Reference at equator |
| 26 degrees north | 100 km² | 1.238 | 80.8 km² | Representative Khasab-latitude teaching tile |
| 45 degrees north | 100 km² | 2.000 | 50.0 km² | Same projected area, half the equatorial ground area |

### Equal on the projected plane does not mean equal on Earth

The 26-degree tile and equatorial tile both occupy 100 projected square kilometres, but the spherical approximation assigns different ground areas. The map is useful for display; its native area measurement is not the answer to every spatial question.

All tiles and areas in the table are synthetic teaching values. They are not Khasab, Musandam, marine, property or protected-area boundaries.

Spatial data contract

## Six checks before an area appears in a dashboard

The coordinate system is treated as part of the data rather than an invisible library setting.

| Check | Question | Failure if skipped | Safer action |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Coordinate reference system | What do the coordinates mean? | Degrees treated as metres | Require known CRS metadata |
| Measurement objective | Display, distance, direction or area? | Wrong projection selected | Choose method for purpose |
| Geographic extent | Local site or cross-region comparison? | Distortion varies across data | Use local or equal-area approach |
| Geometry validity | Are rings closed and non-self-intersecting? | Area result is unstable | Validate and report repairs |
| Boundary authority | Who issued the polygon? | Sketch used as legal boundary | Keep source and version |
| Units and method | How was the final value calculated? | Square degrees labelled km² | Expose units, ellipsoid and algorithm |

### Web Mercator is for familiar display

Its conformal property helps local shapes and angles, but area distortion varies by latitude. The learner avoids measuring its polygons as if its metres were uniformly ground metres.

### Use equal-area for comparisons

An equal-area projection preserves area relationships within its intended use, though shapes may change. The selected projection and extent remain documented.

### Use geodesic calculations where suitable

A geodesic library can calculate area on a reference ellipsoid from longitude and latitude geometry. Axis order, ring direction and invalid polygons still need tests.

### Keep display and analysis layers separate

The interface can show Web Mercator tiles while the analysis service uses geodesic or equal-area methods. A clear API prevents screen coordinates entering calculations.

### Test across latitudes

Automated tests include equatorial, Khasab-latitude and higher-latitude samples, plus antimeridian, holes and self-intersection cases.

### State limits plainly

The project is educational. Navigation, marine safety, land ownership, construction and surveying require official boundaries, professional methods and appropriate authorities.

FAQ

## Questions about coding classes in Khasab

The answers distinguish class facts, official local evidence and synthetic map tiles.

### Who can join coding classes in Khasab?

Modern Age Coders teaches learners aged 6 to 67, including beginners, school students, university learners and working adults. Placement depends on observed ability, pace and objective rather than age alone. The free first class may use logic, mathematics, typing, debugging, data interpretation or a short coding task to identify a suitable course and format.

### What is the Khasab map-projection coding project?

The learner compares synthetic polygons in Web Mercator. Two shapes have equal projected display area, but one is centred near the equator and one at a representative Khasab latitude. Because Mercator area inflation increases with latitude, the shapes do not cover equal ground area. The learner repairs the analysis with an appropriate equal-area or geodesic method.

### Why can two equal-looking map regions have different real areas?

Flattening a curved Earth requires distortion. Web Mercator preserves local angles and familiar map shapes but does not preserve area. Its scale increases away from the equator. A polygon measured directly in projected screen or Web Mercator units can therefore look comparable while representing a different surface area on the ground.

### Which method should a learner use for Khasab area calculations?

Choose the method for the question and extent. Use a suitable local projected coordinate system for local engineering work, an equal-area projection for comparing areas across regions, or a geodesic area algorithm on the reference ellipsoid. Record the coordinate reference system, units, geometry validity and software method. Professional surveying and navigation require authoritative tools and data.

### Are the Khasab project polygons official boundaries?

No. Every polygon and projected area in the classroom table is synthetic. Official sources are cited only for public geographic, administrative, heritage and university facts. The exercise is not a cadastral map, navigation chart, environmental boundary or legal description, and it must not be used for real-world routing or land decisions.

### Does Modern Age Coders have a physical centre in Khasab?

No Khasab office or classroom is claimed. Lessons are live online. A learner joins with a laptop or desktop, stable internet, audio and a current browser. The teacher explains, observes work, reviews code and gives feedback synchronously. This page describes service availability for Khasab rather than a local branch.

### Can UTAS-Musandam learners join?

Yes. University learners may request Python, cloud-computing foundations, web and mobile development, data analysis, mathematics or another suitable route, subject to placement and availability. UTAS-Musandam and Modern Age Coders are independent. The free class identifies a practical starting project without implying affiliation, credit or endorsement.

### How much do coding classes in Khasab cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the group size and schedule for Khasab learners?

A group normally has five to eight compatible learners, while private tuition is one learner with one teacher. Classes usually meet twice each week, normally eight times monthly. Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The recurring time is agreed before payment, with Friday and Saturday options subject to availability.

### What happens in the free Khasab coding class?

The teacher asks about the learner's objective and observes a short ability-matched task. A child may compare map grids, a teenager may test coordinate transformations, and an experienced learner may calculate geodesic area. The teacher then explains the suggested course, format, timing and USD fee. No tuition is charged for the first class.
