## Name a thing, key a thing, keep them distinguishable

Four routes from labelling objects by hand to designing keys that survive two places with almost the same name.

## Two wilayats, one name and a half

Almost everything about how this place is recorded turns on the last word of its name, which is precisely the part a truncating key throws away first.

### A neighbour with the same first four words

Jalan Bani Bu Hassan and Jalan Bani Bu Ali are both wilayats of Ash Sharqiyah South and share every word of their names except the final one. Any system that shortens a name to make a key is deciding, without being asked, whether they are two places.

### A fort with two names

Jalan Bani Bu Hassan Fort is sometimes also known as Al Muhaywil Castle. One building, two labels, so a table keyed on the name holds it twice and a table keyed on a reference holds it once. Both faults, in one wilayat.

### Nine centuries of rebuilding

The fort is said to have been founded in the 9th century during the reign of Al-Muhanna bin Jayfar as Imam of Oman, and was thoroughly rebuilt under Thuwaini bin Said, Sultan from 1856 to 1866, which gave it its present form.

A key is a promise that two things are different

When a key is derived from a name by shortening it, that promise depends on facts about the names that nobody wrote down and nobody is checking. It holds until a place with a similar name is added, and then it fails silently, because a collision looks exactly like a match.

Verified local facts

## Jalan Bani Bu Hassan detail with a trail behind it

Named, dated and located, with the scope of each claim stated.

### A 9th century foundation

The fort is said to have been founded during the reign of Al-Muhanna bin Jayfar as Imam of Oman. Said to have been is the sources' own wording and the page keeps it, because a ninth century foundation date is a tradition rather than a receipt.

### A 19th century rebuild with dates attached

Thuwaini bin Said was Sultan of Oman from 1856 to 1866, and the rebuilding during his reign gave the fort its present form. A reign with two years attached is the kind of fact a timeline can actually be built on.

### The wali's home and office

The fort served as the main fortification in the area and as the home and office of the local wali. One building with two functions is two roles in any record that takes its own schema seriously.

### Two names for the same walls

Al Muhaywil Castle and Jalan Bani Bu Hassan Fort refer to one place. Anybody merging two sources without a shared reference will produce a wilayat with one more fort in it than the wilayat actually has.

### A wilayat inside Ash Sharqiyah South

Jalan Bani Bu Hassan is one of the wilayats of Ash Sharqiyah South, alongside Sur, Jalan Bani Bu Ali, Al Kamil Wal Wafi and Masirah. Two of those five share four words of their names.

### Founded, rebuilt, renovated

The fort is described as founded, thoroughly rebuilt and later renovated. Three verbs, three dates and one building, which is a record that needs an event table rather than a single date column.

Nothing above implies any relationship with Modern Age Coders, and none exists. This wilayat appears because it carries both halves of the key problem at once, which no invented example could do as neatly.

Signature project

## Twelve characters is two places, eleven is one

The learner squashes both wilayat names to a fixed width and watches the two places become one at a width nobody would have thought twice about choosing.

### 1. Build the key the usual way

Strip the spaces, upper case it, cut it to a fixed number of characters. It is the key design most systems reach for first because it is readable and needs no lookup table.

### 2. Sweep the width from eight to fourteen

At eight, nine, ten and eleven characters both wilayats produce JALANBANIBU and its shorter forms, which is one key for two places. At twelve they finally diverge, into JALANBANIBUH and JALANBANIBUA.

### 3. Notice how thin the margin is

Twelve works. Eleven does not. One character is the entire safety margin, and nothing in the code, the schema or the tests records that the margin exists. A system built at eleven merges two wilayats and reports nothing at all.

| Key width | Jalan Bani Bu Hassan | Jalan Bani Bu Ali | Two places or one? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 8 | JALANBAN | JALANBAN | One. Both wilayats share a key |
| 9 | JALANBANI | JALANBANI | One |
| 10 | JALANBANIB | JALANBANIB | One |
| 11 | JALANBANIBU | JALANBANIBU | One, and this is the last failing width |
| 12 | JALANBANIBUH | JALANBANIBUA | Two. The first width that works |

### A collision looks exactly like a match

This was run across every width before the table was written. The reason it is dangerous is that nothing distinguishes a collision from a correct join. Two rows meet, the database is satisfied, the totals combine, and one wilayat quietly absorbs the other. There is no error to search the logs for, because no error occurred.

Reliable pipeline

## Give things identifiers instead of shortened names

A key exists to say two things are different. Derive it from something whose job is to be unique rather than from something whose job is to be readable.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What you get |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Assign | Give each thing an identifier that means nothing else | A key that changes when a name changes | Stable links |
| Separate | Keep the display name in its own column | One field doing identity and presentation | Both, correctly |
| Test | Assert that keys are unique across the whole set | A collision that looks like a match | A failure at build time |
| Alias | Record alternative names against the identifier | One fort stored as two | Al Muhaywil and the Fort as one row |
| Widen | If a derived key is unavoidable, measure the margin | A width chosen by feel | A number you can defend |

### For younger learners

Two long names written on card and covered a letter at a time. Children call out the moment they can no longer tell which is which, and they always find it before an adult expects them to.

### For teenagers

Python sweeps the key width across a range and prints where the collision appears. The learner then writes the uniqueness assertion, watches it fail at eleven, and moves the key to an identifier so the assertion cannot fail again.

### For adults

Identifiers are assigned rather than derived, aliases are stored against them, and a uniqueness constraint in the schema turns a future collision into a refused insert rather than a silent merge.

The two wilayat names, the fort's two names, the 9th century foundation and the 1856 to 1866 reign are published facts. The key widths swept in the project are chosen to bracket the point where the two names diverge. The collision itself is not a choice: it is what those two names do under truncation, and it would happen in any language on any system.

## Live classes for a wilayat that is easy to confuse and hard to reach

Ash Sharqiyah South is a long way from the capital's teaching, and the format is agreed before anybody is asked for money.

### The distance is the argument

A wilayat this far from the capital cannot rely on anybody driving to a centre twice a week for a year. A lesson delivered where the learner already sits is the only version that finishes a course.

### Free before anything is decided

The placement lesson carries a real task and a real recommendation, and no card is requested. If a different course is the honest answer, that is what gets said.

### Groups of five to eight

Matched on level and objective rather than age. A records clerk and a sixteen year old wanting the same skill belong together.

### One to one when the goal is narrow

A single teacher and a single learner for an examination date or one specific problem with a deadline attached to it.

### Eight live lessons a month

Two a week at a recurring agreed time, settled once at enrolment rather than negotiated again each week.

### Set against Oman time

Oman runs one and a half hours behind India. School terms, work patterns, examination periods and Ramadan routines are discussed before a slot is confirmed.

A join that succeeded is not a join that was right

A learner whose keys join cleanly has every reason to move on, and nothing on the screen will stop them. What changes that is a teacher adding the neighbouring wilayat to the data while the learner watches, and then saying nothing while the row count fails to go up.

FAQ

## Jalan Bani Bu Hassan coding class questions

Local facts, project method and service terms, kept apart.

### Why does this page use the neighbouring wilayat's name so much?

Because the two names are the lesson. Jalan Bani Bu Hassan and Jalan Bani Bu Ali differ only in the final word, so a key made by shortening a name merges them at eleven characters and separates them at twelve. No invented example makes the point as cleanly as two real neighbours do.

### Is the fort really called two things?

Yes. Jalan Bani Bu Hassan Fort is sometimes also known as Al Muhaywil Castle. That is the same fault running the other way: keyed on the name it is two forts, keyed on a reference it is one, and a wilayat ends up with more fortifications in the record than it has on the ground.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Jalan Bani Bu Hassan?

No. No premises are claimed here or anywhere in Ash Sharqiyah South. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### Why is a collision worse than an ordinary bug?

Because there is nothing to find. A collision and a correct match are indistinguishable to the database: two rows meet, the join succeeds, the totals combine. No exception is raised and no log line is written, so the only way to catch it is a uniqueness assertion that somebody wrote in advance.

### Is the 9th century founding date certain?

No, and the page words it as the sources do. The fort is said to have been founded during the reign of Al-Muhanna bin Jayfar as Imam of Oman. The 1856 to 1866 reign of Thuwaini bin Said, under which it was rebuilt into its present form, is the firmer of the two dates.

### Can an adult here study rather than a school student?

Yes, up to 67. Adults take Python, databases, data analysis and automation. Anybody who maintains a list of places, customers or products where two entries have similar names will recognise this project, and their own list is the best exercise provided the data is public or theirs to use.

### How much do Jalan Bani Bu Hassan coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Jalan Bani Bu Hassan learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Jalan Bani Bu Hassan class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and transport schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What happens in the free class here?

The teacher establishes what the learner wants to be able to do and sets one task at that level. A child says when two covered names stop being distinguishable, a teenager sweeps a key width and finds the collision, and an adult brings a real list and is asked how its keys were made. The teacher then recommends a course, a format and a time, and states the USD fee. That class is free.
