## Two towns, one falaj, two thousand years of record

Izki is unusually old and unusually well documented, and both of those make its data uneven in exactly the way software handles worst.

### One of the five largest aflaj in Oman

Falaj Al Malki is among the five largest aflaj in the country, with a history spanning over two millennia, and it is shared with the Nizar side of the town. Two thousand years of a working system is two thousand years of observations taken whenever somebody happened to be looking.

### Twin walled towns with two names

The old settlement is described as twin walled towns, Izki or Al Yemen and Al Nizar. Harat Al Yemen is the quarter most visitors walk through. One place, two halves, and a dataset that has to decide whether that is one row or two.

### Two tribal origins, two migration dates

The Yamani are southern Arabs claiming origins in Yemen who migrated to Oman between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD, and the Nizari are northern Arabs who came from what is now the Nejd. Two groups, two ranges of dates, one town.

A reading without a time is half a reading

Storing what was measured and not when it was measured throws away the only information that lets anybody combine it with anything else. It is the cheapest column in the table and the one most often left out, because at the moment of writing it down the time seems obvious.

Verified local facts

## Izki detail with a trail behind it

Named, dated and located, with the scope of each claim stated.

### A claim that is a claim

Izki is popularly described as the oldest town in Oman, and the page repeats that as a popular claim rather than a settled fact, because the sources word it that way. A dataset that stores contested and confirmed in the same column has lost the distinction the sources were careful to make.

### Aflaj as the evidence

The claim to age is supported by the ancient aflaj and the twin walled towns rather than by a single document. Evidence assembled from several kinds of thing is stronger and much harder to store in one field.

### A falaj shared between two sides

Al Malki is shared with Nazar village and is one of the important water sources in the area. Shared ownership means two sets of records about one asset, which will eventually have to be reconciled with each other.

### A history of intrigue between two groups

Izki was notorious for intrigues between the Yamani and the Nizari. Whatever else that is, it is a reminder that a place can hold two accounts of the same event and that a record has to say whose account it is.

### A quarter you can still walk

Harat Al Yemen remains standing and is walked by visitors. A physical place that survives lets a learner check a description against the thing itself, which is rarer than it should be.

### Two millennia is a range, not a date

Over two millennia is how the sources describe the falaj, and the page keeps that wording. Converting a range into a year would read more precisely and would be less true, which is the trade this site refuses to make.

Nothing above implies any relationship with Modern Age Coders and none exists. Izki appears because a working system with two thousand years behind it is the clearest possible case of a record that was never sampled evenly.

Signature project

## Six readings, fifty four years, one misleading average

Five readings in five years and a sixth half a century later. Average them as six and the answer describes the five years, not the fifty four.

### 1. Record the readings with their dates

Five annual readings, then a gap, then one more taken fifty years afterwards. The learner writes the year beside every value, which is the whole discipline in one habit.

### 2. Average them as if they were equal

Six numbers, one mean, 87.7. That treats the fifty year stretch as one observation with the same weight as a single year, so five sixths of the answer comes from five years out of fifty four.

### 3. Weight each reading by the time it stands for

Give every reading the span it actually represents and the average becomes 95.2. The numbers did not change. What changed is that the arithmetic now knows how long each one was true for.

| Reading | Year | Value | Years it stands for | Weight in a plain mean |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | 0 | 100 | 1 | One sixth |
| 2 | 1 | 98 | 1 | One sixth |
| 3 | 2 | 97 | 1 | One sixth |
| 4 | 3 | 96 | 1 | One sixth |
| 5 | 4 | 95 | 50 | One sixth, covering fifty years |
| 6 | 54 | 40 | the end of the record | One sixth |

### Five of the six readings describe five of the fifty four years

Both averages were computed before this was written: 87.7 plain against 95.2 time weighted, from the same six numbers. The plain mean is not wrong about the readings. It is wrong about the period, because it silently assumed the readings were evenly spread and nothing in the data ever said they were.

Reliable pipeline

## Store the time, then let the arithmetic use it

Everything below follows from one decision made at the point of writing a value down.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What it gives you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Record | Store the timestamp with every value | A series that cannot be re-weighted later | Every later question stays open |
| Inspect | Plot against time, not against row order | A gap that looks like a step | The shape the data actually has |
| Weight | Give each reading the span it represents | Five years outvoting fifty | An average about the period |
| Flag | Report the largest gap in the series | A summary that hides a hole | A number a reader can discount |
| State | Say the period the figure covers | A mean with no window attached | A claim somebody can check |

### For younger learners

Cards laid on a paper timeline rather than in a row, so the space between them is visible. Children work out the average of the values and then look at where the cards sit, and usually object before anybody prompts them.

### For teenagers

Python computes both averages from the same list and prints the difference. The learner then adds a function that reports the largest gap, which is the diagnostic that would have raised a flag before anybody looked at the mean.

### For adults

Timestamps become mandatory columns, aggregates are time weighted where the spacing is irregular, and every published mean carries the window it covers and the largest gap inside it.

The falaj, its standing among the five largest aflaj, the twin towns and the tribal origins are published facts. The six readings in the project are teaching values, because no public flow series for this falaj exists, and the page says so. The arithmetic is a property of uneven sampling rather than of these numbers.

## Live classes for a town older than most of the records about it

Izki sits inland in Ad Dakhiliyah, and the format is agreed before anybody is asked for money.

### Nobody travels for a lesson

An interior wilayat is a long way from the capital's teaching, and a weekly journey is the thing that ends most courses before they finish. The lesson comes here instead.

### The placement lesson is free

A real task, a real recommendation and no card. If the honest answer is a different course, that is what the teacher says before any money is discussed.

### Groups of five to eight

Matched on level and objective rather than age, so a strong fifteen year old and an adult beginner can work at the same pace together.

### One to one for a fixed target

A single teacher and a single learner where there is an examination or one specific problem with a deadline attached.

### Two live lessons a week

Eight in a normal month, at a recurring time settled at enrolment rather than rearranged week by week.

### Set against Oman time

Oman runs one and a half hours behind India. School terms, work patterns, examinations and Ramadan routines are all discussed before a slot is fixed.

The objection a learner has to be given room to raise

A mean of six numbers is a correct mean of six numbers, and a screen will never say otherwise. What changes a learner is a teacher showing them the dates beside the values and then not saying anything, until the learner works out for themselves that five of the six cover five of fifty four years.

FAQ

## Izki coding class questions

Local facts, project method and service terms, kept apart.

### Is Izki really the oldest town in Oman?

It is popularly described that way and the page repeats it as a popular claim rather than a settled fact, because the sources word it carefully and so should we. The supporting evidence is the ancient aflaj and the twin walled towns rather than a single dated document.

### Are the falaj readings in the project real?

No, and the page says so. Falaj Al Malki, its standing among the five largest aflaj in Oman and its history of over two millennia are published. The six readings are teaching values, because no public flow series exists, and the arithmetic works the same on any series you substitute.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Izki?

No. No premises are claimed in Izki or anywhere in Ad Dakhiliyah. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### Where does uneven sampling actually bite?

Anywhere a person, rather than a machine, decided when to take a reading. Maintenance logs, medical notes, water levels, customer surveys, exam results in a year with a disruption. If somebody chose the moments, the moments are not evenly spread, and an unweighted mean is describing the moments rather than the period.

### Can an adult in Izki study rather than a school student?

Yes, up to 67. Adults take Python, databases, data analysis and automation, and anybody who summarises readings for somebody else to act on will recognise this project. Their own series is the best exercise, provided the data is public or theirs to use.

### What does a learner have at the end?

Both averages computed from one series, a function that reports the largest gap in it, and the habit of writing a timestamp beside every value. The gap report is the useful one: it flags the problem before anybody has drawn a conclusion from the mean.

### How much do Izki coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Izki learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Izki class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and transport schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What happens in the free Izki class?

The teacher establishes what the learner wants to be able to do and sets one task at that level. A child lays cards on a timeline, a teenager computes both averages and explains the gap, and an adult brings a real set of readings and is asked what period their summary describes. The teacher then recommends a course, a format and a time, and states the USD fee. That class is free.
