## Three wijken between the Dommel and the campus

Since Napoleonic times Gestel belonged to the municipality of Gestel en Blaarthem, and it was one of the villages joined to Eindhoven on 1 January 1920. The statistics office now divides it into three wijken, Rozenknopje, Oud-Gestel and Gestelse Ontginning, whose areas add to 953 hectares, 917 of land and 35 of water. The encyclopaedia gives Gestel as 9.53 square kilometres, 9.17 land and 0.35 water, the same figures to the hectare, so the three wijken are the whole stadsdeel. The encyclopaedia calls the third wijk Oud Kasteel where the office says Gestelse Ontginning; the areas show that the two names cover the same ground. The 2026 resident counts add to 28,334, a sum of three published rows rather than a published total.

### Rozenknopje, next to the centre

6,934 residents on 111 hectares of land, the most tightly built of the three, in three buurten: Hagenkamp, the Schrijversbuurt and the Oude Spoorbaan. Six in ten households hold one person, 2,455 of 4,120, and 57 percent of the 3,751 dwellings are rented. One secondary establishment here teaches 1,209 pupils.

### Oud-Gestel, the old village and the parks

13,340 residents on 561 hectares, in seven buurten from Genderdal and Rapelenburg to Blaarthem, Gennep and the Beemden. Much of the land is the Genneper Parken and the water of the Dommel and the Gender, which is why the density is low for a wijk this full. Two thirds of the 6,958 dwellings are rented, 4,662 of them.

### Gestelse Ontginning, owned and older

8,060 residents on 245 hectares, in three buurten: Genderbeemd, Hanevoet and Ooievaarsnest. The owner-occupied share is the highest in Gestel, 2,290 of 3,694 dwellings, and so is the share over sixty-five, 1,845 residents, 23 percent. Four primary establishments teach 954 pupils.

A painted mill, a village church and a research campus

The encyclopaedia entry for Gestel supplies the landmarks. The Sint-Lambertuskerk, with its pastorie, was built in 1910 to a design by Wolter te Riele. The Genneper Watermolen was painted four times on canvas by Vincent van Gogh. The Historisch Openlucht Museum Eindhoven stands in the Genneper Parken, among a cluster of other sports grounds. The Clarissenklooster is on the Claralaan and the convent of the Zusters van Liefde van Schijndel on the Hoogstraat. The small river Gender, which once meandered, has become a drainage channel, while the Dommel still flows south of Gestel. And the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, which began in 1998 as the central research centre of Philips and opened to other innovative companies in 2003, lies in the south of Gestel.

One gap, five headlines

## Six homes apart, and 29 points apart, at the same time

All the counts below are published by the statistics office for 2025. Every share, difference and ratio is a calculation made on this page, and each row of the table is a true description of the same two wijken.

Read down the last column and the two wijken go from identical to wildly different without a single number changing. The count says they are the same because Gestelse Ontginning has almost exactly half as many dwellings, 3,694 against 6,958, and so its 2,290 owner-occupied homes make up almost twice the share. The points column is the only one that gives the same answer whichever wijk is taken as the starting point: 29 points from either side. Every ratio depends on its base, which is why 88 percent more and 47 percent fewer describe one gap, and on which side of the complement is counted, which is why owning gives 88 and renting gives 76. The odds ratio, 3.3, is larger again, and it is the number a logistic regression would print.

### The comparisons

Owner-occupied: 2,296 of 6,958 is 33.0 percent and 2,290 of 3,694 is 62.0; the gap is 29.0 points; 62.0 over 33.0 is 1.88, and 33.0 over 62.0 is 0.53; rented, 67.0 against 38.0, a ratio of 1.76; odds of owning 0.49 and 1.63, a ratio of 3.3. ### What the page does not say

It does not say either wijk is more prosperous, more settled or better housed; tenure is a fact about contracts, and the page draws no line from it to anything else. It does not compare the two income measures, per resident and per recipient, which divide by different populations. And it reads no trend into the 8,295 residents of Gestelse Ontginning in 2013 against 8,060 now.

Modern Age Coders is not connected with Gestel, with Eindhoven, with the campus in its south or with any school, museum or church named here, and nothing on the page implies a connection. Each wijk figure was read from its own statistics office page: residents and ages for 2026, households, dwellings, tenure and dwelling values for 2025, income for 2024, resident students for 2025. The 1920 merger, the 9.53 square kilometres and the landmarks are from the encyclopaedia entries, and the page quotes them without adding to them.

Signature project

## Say the gap in points first, then say which ratio you mean

A difference between two percentages can be taken by subtracting or by dividing, from either end, on either side of the complement, or as odds. Only one of those is symmetric. The rest are honest only when they are labelled.

### 1. Start with the counts and the bases

2,296 of 6,958 and 2,290 of 3,694. Before any comparison, write down both numbers in each fraction, because the counts alone say the wijken are identical and the shares alone hide how different the wijken are in size.

### 2. Take the difference in points

Subtract the shares: 62.0 minus 33.0 is 29 points. Start from either wijk and the answer is the same, and it is the same for owning and for renting. That symmetry is why it is the safest first figure, and why a percentage point should never be called a percent.

### 3. Then any ratio, with its base named

88 percent higher, measured from Oud-Gestel. 47 percent lower, measured from Gestelse Ontginning. 76 percent more renting, measured on the other side. Odds 3.3 times. Each is fine with its base stated in the same sentence, and misleading without it.

### Subtracting is symmetric, dividing is not, and code has to choose

The reason relative figures run away is arithmetic, not dishonesty. Divide by a small base and every change looks enormous, which is why error rates near zero produce spectacular percentages and why a model that goes from 2 percent wrong to 1 percent wrong can be announced as halving its errors. Divide from the other end and the same gap shrinks, because the base is bigger; that is 88 percent against 47. Switch to the complement and the base changes again, which turns 88 into 76. Odds stretch the scale further still, and an odds ratio of 3.3 is regularly read aloud as three times as likely, which it is not. Programming meets this choice directly. The standard comparison function in Python, math.isclose, takes two tolerances, a relative one and an absolute one, because neither works alone: a relative tolerance is useless when comparing values close to zero, and an absolute one is meaningless when comparing large ones. Tests of numerical code, dashboards of conversion rates and papers reporting model gains all make the same decision, whether or not anyone notices. The discipline is simple and almost never followed. Give the difference in points, or in the raw unit, first; then, if a ratio is useful, give it with its base named in the same sentence; and never let a percentage point be written as a percent. Gestel makes the point with two wijken on one river that own the same number of homes, six apart, and differ by 29 points.

## Five habits for reporting how much two numbers differ

Model gains, test pass rates, conversion rates, error rates, survey shares and prices all get compared, and every comparison can be framed to sound large or small. Practised on two wijken of Gestel that are the same by count and far apart by share.

## An AI will say one wijk of Gestel has 88 percent more homeowners. Why should a teenager in Hanevoet ask 88 percent of what?

Because it is also 29 points, 47 percent fewer, odds 3.3 times, and six homes.

Give a language model the two tenure rows and ask how the wijken compare, and it will usually choose a ratio, because ratios sound informative and most of the comparison sentences it learned from use them. It may say owner-occupation is 88 percent higher in Gestelse Ontginning, which is true, or nearly twice as high, which is also true, and it is unlikely to mention that the same data supports 47 percent lower from the other side, or that the two wijken contain the same number of owner-occupied homes. The reply is fluent and correct in every word. The reader has simply been handed one of five framings, chosen by the grammar of the question rather than by anyone deciding what matters.

A learner who has written code that compares results, and has had to pick between a relative and an absolute tolerance to make a test pass for the right reason, knows that every comparison is a decision. Machine learning makes the lesson constant, since every paper, leaderboard and release note reports an improvement, and the difference between one point and fifty percent fewer errors is the difference between an honest release note and a misleading one. Models will go on picking framings that sound good. Asking in points, from which base and on which side stays a human habit.

The case for a child in Gestel learning to code in 2026 is therefore not the research campus at the southern edge of the stadsdeel. It is that a program comparing two numbers has to say how it compares them, and a person who has written one learns to ask every headline the same thing. Gestel runs from streets a few minutes from the station out to the Genneper Parken and the campus in the south, and whichever part a family lives in, the evening is the thing in short supply.

### The lesson comes to the table

From Hanevoet or Blaarthem any classroom is a trip across the city, and twice a week that trip is what quietly ends a habit. Online, the learner opens a laptop at the agreed hour and the travel time becomes part of the evening again.

### Dutch school terms, left as they are

Groep, havo, vwo and profielkeuze are used untranslated in class. They are the words on every school report a child in Gestel brings home, so the teacher uses them too and nothing is lost in a translation that was never needed.

Gestel has nine primary establishments teaching 1,728 pupils and five secondary establishments teaching 4,518, four of them in Oud-Gestel alone, which makes the stadsdeel a place thousands of teenagers travel to every morning. That concentration does not help form a coding group. What matters is how many learners, anywhere, are at one stage of one subject in the same month, and that is always a small number, so classes are formed by stage from a pool spanning every age from 6 to 67.

Yes. From Napoleonic times Gestel belonged to the municipality of Gestel en Blaarthem, which was joined to Eindhoven on 1 January 1920 together with Woensel, Strijp, Stratum and Tongelre. The Sint-Lambertuskerk in the old village dates from 1910 and was designed by Wolter te Riele.

The encyclopaedia entry says the Genneper Watermolen was painted four times on canvas by Vincent van Gogh. The mill stands by the Genneper Parken in Oud-Gestel, where the Historisch Openlucht Museum Eindhoven and a number of sports grounds are also found.
