## Learn when one row per person stops being enough

Four routes from listing what people do on paper to building the small extra table that makes every count come out right.

## Three crafts, and households that do more than one

A place with several small trades rather than one industry produces exactly the kind of record that a simple table cannot represent honestly.

### Named crafts, not a single industry

The wilayat is associated with tanning leather, extracting rose water and keeping bees. Three separate skills in one community means overlap is normal rather than exceptional, and overlap is what a one-value-per-row table cannot express.

### Mountains on every side

Dhank takes its name from its topography, with mountains surrounding all sides. A place enclosed like that has its own internal economy, which is precisely why one household is likely to do more than one thing.

### Valleys that carry the water

The wilayat holds many valleys, among them Wadi Al Fateh and Wadi Qumeirah. Named features again, and again more of them than a single column would comfortably hold.

A column can hold one value, and people do more than one thing

When a household practises two crafts, somebody has to choose: pick the main one and lose the other, or write both into the cell separated by a comma. The first loses data outright. The second keeps it and makes it uncountable, which is often worse, because it looks complete.

Verified local facts

## Dhank facts with a trail behind them

Each claim traced, and each one kept at the scope its source gives it.

### A name taken from the landscape

The wilayat is described as taking the name Dhank from its odd topographic features, with mountains surrounding all sides. Where a place is named for its shape, the shape is usually load-bearing for everything else about it.

### In the centre of the governorate

Dhank sits in the centre of Al Dhahirah Governorate, bordered by Al Buraimi to the northwest, Ibri to the southwest and Yanqul to the east. Three named neighbours is a clean, checkable statement of position.

### Valleys with names

Among its many valleys are Wadi Al Fateh and Wadi Qumeirah. The sources name two out of many, which is a sample rather than a list, and the page treats it as one.

### Leather, roses and bees

The wilayat is known for traditional crafts including tanning leather, extracting rose water and breeding honey bees. Three crafts is the fact the project rests on.

### Aflaj running through it

Dhank is also noted for its falaj. Irrigation is what makes rose cultivation and beekeeping possible in the same place, which is part of why the crafts overlap at all.

### A wilayat of Adh Dhahirah

Dhank is one of the wilayats of the Adh Dhahirah governorate. Its immediate neighbour Yanqul carries the copper project, so the two sit in very different economic directions.

Modern Age Coders has no connection to any craft, valley or falaj named above and claims none. Dhank is on this page because three overlapping trades in one small community is the smallest honest example of a relationship that a flat table breaks.

Signature project

## Thirty four households doing leather work, reported as fourteen

One survey, one column, and two large errors pointing in opposite directions at the same time.

### 1. Ask sixty households what they do

Some do one craft, twenty six of them do two or all three. Every answer is recorded accurately in a single craft column, with multiple answers joined by commas. The household figures are teaching values, since no craft survey is published, and the page says so.

### 2. Count each craft by matching the column

Asking how many households tan leather by matching the cell exactly returns 14. The true figure is 34, because twenty of them have leather sitting alongside something else in the same cell. Rose water comes back 63 per cent low and honey 67 per cent low.

### 3. Add the correct craft counts together

The true counts are 34, 30 and 27, which sum to 91. There are 60 households. Reporting 91 as a number of households overstates by 52 per cent, and the arithmetic was right both times.

| Question asked | Answer given | True answer | Error |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Households tanning leather | 14 | 34 | 59 per cent too low |
| Households making rose water | 11 | 30 | 63 per cent too low |
| Households keeping bees | 9 | 27 | 67 per cent too low |
| The three true counts added up | 91 | 60 households | 52 per cent too high |
| Households doing more than one craft | invisible | 26 of 60 | The cause of both |
| Households in the survey | 60 | 60 | The only figure that survives |

### Being wrong in both directions at once is what makes this hard to spot

A reader who checks the per-craft numbers finds them low and might blame the survey. A reader who checks the total finds it high and might blame double entry. Neither of them will suspect the column, because the column looks perfectly ordinary and every individual answer in it is true. The fix is a second table with one row per household and craft. Every figure above was computed before this was written.

Reliable pipeline

## When one thing can have many of another, give it its own table

Five habits that take minutes at design time and save an argument later.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What it gives you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ask | Can one record have two of these? | A design decision made by accident | A question answered before any data exists |
| Split | Give the relationship its own table | A list stuffed into a single cell | One row per pair, countable forever |
| Refuse | Never store comma-separated values in a column | Data that is present and uncountable | A column a query can actually use |
| Distinguish | Say whether a total counts records or things | Craft counts read as household counts | A heading that names its own unit |
| Reconcile | Check any total against the number of records | A sum larger than the population | A discrepancy visible in one line |

### For younger learners

Sixty paper slips, three labelled hoops, and slips that belong in two hoops at once. Deciding what to do with those is the entire lesson, and it happens on the floor without a screen.

### For teenagers

The survey in Python, counted first from the joined column and then from a proper list of household and craft pairs. The learner prints both answers side by side and writes the check that no craft total may exceed the number of households.

### For adults

Many-to-many relationships get their own table at design time, no column is ever asked to hold a list, and every reported total names whether it is counting records or the things inside them.

The three crafts, the topography and the name, the position in the centre of the governorate, the named neighbours and the valleys of Wadi Al Fateh and Wadi Qumeirah are published. The sixty households and their craft combinations are invented for teaching, because no craft survey was found, and that is stated wherever they appear. The behaviour belongs to the data model rather than to these particular numbers.

## Live classes in a wilayat ringed by mountains

A place enclosed on all sides is a place where getting to a class is a real journey, and where a connection changes the arithmetic completely.

### Mountains make distance expensive

Where the terrain encloses a wilayat, travel to a lesson costs more than the lesson. Teaching delivered over a connection removes that cost from the decision entirely.

### Nothing is charged for the first lesson

It runs as a real class with a genuine task and closes with a clear recommendation. No card details are taken to book it, and nobody is asked to commit before watching a teacher work.

### Five to eight per group, chosen by level

Group membership follows what a learner can do and what they are working toward. It does not follow their address, which is exactly what proximity cannot offer.

### One to one where the target is narrow

A single teacher and a single learner, for a dated examination or one specific gap that a shared syllabus would only be able to detour around.

### Eight live lessons in a typical month

Two a week at a slot agreed once when a learner enrols, rather than renegotiated as work, school and the season change.

### Ninety minutes of clock, handled at the start

That is the gap between Oman and India. Term dates, working hours, examination periods and Ramadan are all raised before a recurring time is fixed.

Two wrong answers that each look like somebody else's fault

A learner seeing low craft counts blames the survey, and seeing a high total blames duplicate entries. What redirects them is a teacher asking how a household that does two crafts appears in the file, and then saying nothing at all until the learner goes and looks.

FAQ

## Dhank coding class questions

The place, the teaching and the terms, each answered on its own.

### Are the Dhank crafts real?

Yes. The wilayat is described as known for traditional crafts including tanning leather, extracting rose water and breeding honey bees. The sixty households and their combinations in the project are teaching values, because no craft survey was found, and the page says so wherever they appear.

### Why is a comma-separated column worse than losing the data?

Because it looks complete. If a survey only recorded one craft per household, everyone would know something was missing. A cell reading leather and honey looks like it has captured everything, and it has, in a form no query can count. Correct data that cannot be counted invites more confidence than obviously incomplete data.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Dhank?

No. No premises are claimed in Dhank or anywhere in Adh Dhahirah. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### How can one file be too low and too high at once?

They are answers to different questions. Matching the column exactly misses every household that listed two crafts, so each craft comes out low. Adding the three correct craft counts together counts the overlapping households more than once, so the total comes out high. Both follow from the same twenty six households.

### Do you teach adults in Dhank as well as school students?

Yes, up to 67. Adults work through Python, databases and analytics. If any system you use has a field holding a comma-separated list, this fault is already in your reports. Where the data is yours to bring, it is far better material than anything we could invent.

### What is a learner holding at the end of this?

A second table with one row per household and craft, counts that reconcile against the number of households, and headings that state whether they count records or the things inside them. None of that is specific to any database.

### How much do Dhank coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Dhank learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Dhank class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and travel schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What happens in the free Dhank class?

We work out what the learner wants to be able to do and set a single task there. A child sorts slips into three hoops and has to decide about the ones that belong in two. A teenager counts a survey from a joined column and then from proper pairs. An adult is asked whether anything in their own system stores a list in a single field. A course, a format, a time and the USD fee follow. That class is free.
