After it, Tullow has 5,138 and Muinebeag, also called Bagenalstown, has 2,945. ### Split across a county line About 22,496 of Carlow town sits on the Carlow side and roughly 4,855 in County Laois. Those two figures are our own arithmetic from two published tables, not numbers the statistics office prints. ### Three electoral areas Carlow has 25,168 people, Tullow 20,225 and Muinebeag 16,575, which is a fair picture of how evenly the rest of the county is spread outside the town. Two figures matter for an evening class here. About 36% of the county lives in a town of ten thousand or more, so most families are in villages or open country, and 15,220 people drive to work with an average journey of 29.7 minutes, up from 28.5 in 2016. Meanwhile more than 6,300 people now work from home at least some of the time, roughly a quarter of the workforce. A household already used to a laptop at the kitchen table is a household where a live lesson works. Computer Science in Carlow schools ## Not one school in the first phase We read all forty addresses on the Department's January 2018 list. None of them is in County Carlow. ### A zero worth stating When Leaving Certificate Computer Science began in September 2018, no Carlow school was among the named schools. This is a finding, not a gap in our reading: every address on the published list was checked. ### What it does not mean It does not tell you where the subject is taught today. No current official list exists, so we make no claim about now; plenty can have changed in eight years. ### What we do We teach programming, data and problem solving in a weekly live class. Not the examination subject, and never the assessed work, but the ground the subject assumes. The county does have third level. South East Technological University's Carlow campus on the Kilkenny Road runs to about 30 hectares and sixteen buildings, some 37,500 square metres, with playing pitches and parking. Its oldest building, the Nore, is nearly fifty years old, while the newest went up in 2024, and a third-level institute has been on the site since 1970. Its published addresses are Kilkenny Road at R93 V960 and the south sports campus at Mortarstown Upper, R93 AYW9. For a student who wants to study computing without leaving the county, that is the local route, and the years before it are exactly when a weekly class pays off. Who lives in the county Non-Irish citizens make up 11% of Carlow. The largest groups are Polish at 1,875, then UK at 846, Romanian at 590 and Latvian at 550, and dual citizenship has risen from 943 to 1,491, most commonly Irish and UK. There were 573 Irish Travellers in the county, up 12% on 2016. Signature project ## The county town that a filter deletes This project works because the learner knows the place. Carlow has three of them, because it is small and its towns sit on rivers that are also boundaries. ### The seductive part The filter returns sixteen rows and a total that looks perfectly sensible for a small county. Nothing about the result signals that the county town is missing from it. ### What to do instead Match the county name anywhere in the label, then read the rows you excluded before discarding them, and reconcile your total against a published one. ### And a county with nothing to download We also checked whether Carlow County Council publishes open data of its own, by querying the national portal's own organisation record. The council has zero datasets registered. Some Irish councils publish generously, some publish a little, and some publish none; Carlow is currently in the third group. That is worth knowing before a student plans a project around local data, and it is why this page uses a national table with a Carlow-shaped problem inside it instead. Checking the publisher first, rather than hoping, is the professional move. The project ends with two numbers: the naive total and the corrected one, and a sentence explaining the difference. Students who have written that sentence once tend to check every roll-up they are ever handed. Census figures are the Central Statistics Office's for 2022; the filter measurements and the Carlow-side split are ours, and the split is labelled as derived wherever it appears. Living in the county ## R93, the Barrow and a county that commutes A short tour of the things a Carlow family would expect a page about their county to know. ### One routing key R93 covers the county town's published addresses, including both South East Technological University campuses on the Kilkenny Road, at R93 V960 and R93 AYW9. ### A river that divides The Barrow is why Carlow town straddles a county line: Graiguecullen, on the west bank, is in County Laois, which is exactly what the statistics office records in its town label. ### Work and home 23,650 people travelled to work in the county in April 2022, 15,220 of them by car, while participation in the labour force sat at 60% against 61% nationally. The Irish language in Carlow The census recorded 21,246 Irish speakers, 38.3% of everyone aged three and over, a little below the national rate. Classes here are taught in English, and programming keywords are English regardless of the language of a learner's school, so this makes no practical difference. Why should a Carlow teenager check what it kept? Because the wrong answer is short by a county town and says nothing about it. Give an AI tool the table and ask for the population of Carlow's towns. It will write a sensible filter, probably matching labels that end in the county name, and return a number. That number excludes Carlow town, because Carlow town is labelled with two counties. The tool has not malfunctioned: it applied the pattern that fits almost every row, which is exactly what makes the exception dangerous. What protects you is knowing the place, and asking the question a local would ask: where is Carlow town in this answer? A learner who has been surprised by their own home town once starts asking that of every dataset, including ones about places they have never been. So a Carlow child learning to code in 2026 is not learning it because the county is full of software firms. They are learning to notice when a confident number is missing something, which is a skill this county will keep needing. Delivery ## Tullow, Borris, Hacketstown or the town itself Outside the county town, Carlow is villages and farmland, and an evening class in a room means a drive for nearly everyone. ### No car needed A learner in Rathvilly and one in Bagenalstown sit in the same group without either parent driving anywhere. ### The Irish school year, by name First Year, the Junior Cycle, Transition Year and sixth year, used as they are in school here, so nothing needs explaining. ### A free lesson that is a lesson Real work on a real task, then an honest recommendation on level, course and hour, with no card details taken. ### Grouped by ability Five to ten learners at one level, drawn from Carlow and other countries, which is what makes a good hour possible in a small county. ### A weekly rhythm Two lessons most weeks, about eight a month, at the same hour, pausing for mid-terms, exams and holidays by agreement. ### Teachers on a fixed clock India does not change its clocks, so our teachers sit four and a half hours ahead of Ireland in summer and five and a half in winter.
