## Measure a shape, not the box around it

Four routes from area on squared paper to polygon arithmetic a surveyor or a planner could rely on.

## An oasis defined by a boundary that follows the ground

Almost everything published about Bahla is a measurement of something with an awkward outline, which is exactly the case software handles worst.

### A wall longer than twelve kilometres

The oasis walls extend for more than 12 kilometres, enclosing mosques, Quran schools, a traditional market and the pottery workshops. That is a length. It is not an area, and the difference between those two things is the subject of this page.

### A fort measured at 9,822 square metres

Bahla Fort covers about 9,822 square metres and is irregular in shape, which the record attributes to defensive architecture adapting to the natural terrain. Somebody measured that number properly rather than multiplying a length by a width.

### A craft older than most records

Bahla is a centre for pottery and the tradition is dated back as early as 2500 BC, with clay taken from the wadis. A potter has always known that the outside of a vessel and the volume inside it are two separate measurements.

A boundary is a list of points, not a single number

The moment a shape is stored as one figure, its length or its width or its perimeter, every question about the space inside becomes a guess. Storing the boundary itself costs a few more rows and answers questions the single number never could.

Verified local facts

## Bahla detail with a published trail

Dated, measured and named, with the scope of each claim stated.

### The first Omani site on the UNESCO list

Bahla Fort was inscribed in 1987 and was the first site in the Sultanate to be added to the World Heritage List. It is built of adobe walls and towers on stone foundations and is described as one of the largest forts in Oman.

### A dynasty with two separate capitals

The Nabhani dynasty, Banu Nabhan, ruled from the middle of the 12th century to the end of the 15th. Bahla was their second capital in the first period and their main capital in the second. Two roles, two date ranges, and a record that flattens them loses both.

### A castle five kilometres away

Jabrin Castle stands about 5 kilometres south west, built during the Al Ya'ruba dynasty in the middle of the 17th century, and served as a centre for medicine, astrology and Islamic studies as well as a residence.

### A mihrab from the 14th century

The Friday Mosque carries a sculpted mihrab dated to roughly the 14th century. Roughly is the honest word and the page keeps it, because a range stated as a range is worth more than a false precision that reads better.

### Forty kilometres from Nizwa

Bahla sits about 40 kilometres from Nizwa and roughly 200 kilometres from Muscat, at an elevation of about 550 metres. Those are three different measurements of position and none of them substitutes for another.

### A souq still selling what the town makes

The old Bahla Souq sells pottery, silver work and handcrafted goods. A market where the goods are made locally gives a learner a supply chain short enough to model honestly, which is rarer than it sounds.

None of the above endorses Modern Age Coders and no relationship is implied. Bahla is used because its measurements are published to a precision that lets a learner test the argument rather than take it on trust.

Signature project

## One wall, thirty nine different answers

The wall is more than 12 kilometres. Ask what that encloses and the honest reply is a range, not a number, and the range is enormous.

### 1. Fix the wall, vary the shape

The learner keeps the perimeter at 12 kilometres and computes the area for a circle, a square and a series of long thin strips. Nothing changes except the shape, and the area moves from 11.46 square kilometres down to 0.30.

### 2. Notice which direction the error runs

A circle is the most land any given perimeter can enclose. Every other shape encloses less. So a perimeter gives an upper bound and never a lower one, which is a genuinely useful thing to know and almost never taught.

### 3. Move it into software

The same mistake in code is the bounding box: take the minimum and maximum of the coordinates and multiply. On an eight-vertex plot shaped like an L, that comes out 98.6 per cent too big. The repair is the shoelace formula, six lines, exact for any polygon.

| Shape it goes round | Area enclosed, square kilometres | Share of the best case |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A circle | 11.46 | 100 per cent, the maximum any perimeter can reach |
| A square | 9.00 | 79 per cent |
| A strip one kilometre wide | 5.00 | 44 per cent |
| A strip 200 metres wide | 1.16 | 10 per cent |
| A strip 50 metres wide | 0.30 | 3 per cent |

### The perimeter is an upper bound and nothing else

Every figure in that table was computed before it was written. The spread between the best and worst case is 39 times, on one unchanged wall length. Any sentence of the form the site is X kilometres around, so it must be about Y in area, is guessing, and the guess can be wrong by a factor of forty.

Reliable pipeline

## Store the boundary, compute the area, cite the method

The shoelace formula is short enough to write from memory and exact for any simple polygon, which makes the bounding box a choice rather than a necessity.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What it gives you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Capture | Store the vertices, not a length or a width | A shape reduced to one number too early | Every later question stays answerable |
| Compute | Use the shoelace formula on the real polygon | A bounding box standing in for the shape | An exact area for any simple outline |
| Check | Compare the polygon area to its bounding box | Not knowing how wrong the shortcut was | A ratio that flags awkward shapes |
| Bound | Treat a perimeter as an upper bound only | A confident area derived from a length | A range you can defend |
| Report | State which method produced the figure | Two teams computing different numbers | A figure somebody else can reproduce |

### For younger learners

A fixed loop of string on squared paper. Children make a circle, a square and a long thin rectangle from the same loop and count the squares inside each. The perimeter has not changed and the count has, which settles the argument before any code.

### For teenagers

Python implements the shoelace formula and the bounding box, runs both on the same plot, and prints the difference as a percentage. The learner then finds a shape that makes the gap as large as they can, which teaches more than any worked example.

### For adults

Boundaries are stored as coordinate lists, area is a computed column rather than an entered one, and any figure that came from a bounding box is labelled as an estimate wherever it appears.

The wall length, the fort area, the UNESCO inscription and the dynasty dates are published figures. The L-shaped plot in the bounding box example is a teaching shape and the page says so. The arithmetic holds for any outline you substitute, which is what makes it worth learning rather than memorising.

## Classes for an inland oasis two hundred kilometres from the capital

Bahla sits about 200 kilometres from Muscat and 40 from Nizwa, which settles the question of whether a weekly journey is realistic.

### The journey stops being the deciding factor

Two hundred kilometres to the capital and back is a day. Even Nizwa at forty kilometres is a real evening commitment twice a week for a year. A class that arrives at the house removes the arithmetic entirely.

### No charge for the placement lesson

A real task, a real recommendation and no card requested. If a different course is the honest answer, the teacher says so before any money is discussed.

### Groups of five to eight

Matched on level and objective rather than age, so a fourteen year old and an adult starting from the same point can work at the same pace together.

### One to one for a fixed goal

One teacher and one learner suits an examination date or a single concrete problem better than any group can be shaped around.

### Two live lessons a week

Eight in a normal month, at a recurring agreed time rather than a slot renegotiated every week.

### Set against Oman time

Oman runs one and a half hours behind India, and school terms, work patterns, examination periods and Ramadan routines are all discussed before a time is fixed.

The moment a teacher is worth the money

A learner who computes a bounding box gets a number, and a number ends the task as far as the screen is concerned. What changes them is somebody asking how far off it might be, and then waiting while they work out how to find out rather than telling them.

FAQ

## Bahla coding class questions

Local facts, project detail and service terms, kept apart.

### Why does a coding page talk about area and perimeter?

Because the confusion between them is one of the most expensive quiet errors in working with data, and Bahla makes it concrete. The oasis wall is a published length around ground that is not a rectangle. Once a learner has seen the same 12 kilometres enclose anywhere from 11.46 to 0.30 square kilometres, they stop accepting an area derived from a length anywhere else.

### Is the 12 kilometre wall figure real?

Yes. The oasis walls are recorded as extending for more than 12 kilometres, and Bahla Fort is recorded at about 9,822 square metres and described as irregular in shape. The L-shaped plot used in the bounding box example is a teaching shape and is labelled as one on the page.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Bahla?

No. No premises are claimed in Bahla or anywhere in Ad Dakhiliyah. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### What is the shoelace formula?

A way of computing the exact area of any simple polygon from its corner coordinates. It is six lines of code, it needs no library, and it removes every reason to approximate a shape with the rectangle around it. Teenagers can write it in one lesson.

### Can adults in Bahla enrol rather than school students?

Yes, up to 67. Adults take Python, databases, data analysis and automation. Anybody who works with land, buildings, stock or delivery areas will recognise this project immediately, and their own figures make the best exercise as long as the data is public or theirs to use.

### What does a learner have at the end?

A working area calculator for any polygon, a measured comparison against the shortcut, and the habit of asking which method produced a number before quoting it. That habit transfers well beyond geometry.

### How much do Bahla coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Bahla learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Bahla class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and transport schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What happens in the free Bahla class?

The teacher establishes what the learner wants to be able to do and sets one task at that level. A child makes shapes from one loop of string and counts squares, a teenager writes the shoelace formula, and an adult brings a figure they have had to justify and is asked how it was derived. The teacher then recommends a course, a format and a time, and states the USD fee. That class is free.
