Area that size guarantees variety, and variety is what breaks a careless average. ### Two niabas inside one wilayat Sinaw and Samad Ash Shan are niabas of Al Mudhaibi. That is a real administrative level between the wilayat and the village, and a dataset that has no column for it will quietly aggregate two very different places into one row. ### Villages that are not comparable in size Al Sudairah, Barzman, Al Zahib, Al Alia, Al Habat, Mahlia, Al Ghariyin, Al Khadraa and Bani Difaa all sit inside the same name, along with the Al-Dhaqiq area between Lazq and Al Maysar. Treating that list as a list of equals is the mistake this page is about. An average has an implied weighting whether you chose one or not Averaging a column of rates weights every row equally. Sometimes that is what you meant. Usually it is not, and nothing in the output records which of the two you were doing. Saying out loud what each row is worth is the whole of the fix, and it takes one sentence. Verified local facts ## Al Mudhaibi facts with a trail behind them Named, measured and dated, with the scope of each claim stated. ### Bronze Age settlement at Samad Samad al-Shan is noted for ancient sites of the Umm al-Nar period, dated to roughly 2500 to 2000 BCE. A place with four thousand years of continuous record is a place where a dataset needs an explicit period column rather than a single date. ### One of Oman's best known markets Suq Sinaw is among the most popular souqs in the country, trading dresses, khanjars and jewellery. A market with distinct product categories is a natural setting for learning why a category column beats a free-text description. ### Agriculture as the first craft Agriculture is described as the first craft the population practised, with palm, lemon, alfalfa and vegetable crops alongside grazing and camel rearing. Five crop types on one landholding is five different yield series, not one. ### Desert on one side, cultivation on the other The wilayat holds both cultivated land and a large stretch of desert. Averaging any per-area figure across ground that different produces a number describing nowhere in particular. ### An administrative level people forget Because Sinaw is a niaba rather than a separate wilayat, records sometimes list it independently and sometimes fold it into Al Mudhaibi. A reader comparing two such sources without noticing will conclude something changed when nothing did. ### Named areas between named towns The Al-Dhaqiq area is described as lying between the town of Lazq and Al Maysar. A place defined by what it sits between needs coordinates, not only a name, before anybody tries to measure anything about it. No affiliation with any of the above exists or is claimed. Al Mudhaibi appears because a wilayat whose parts differ this much in size makes the averaging problem visible in a way a tidy example never could. Signature project ## Seventy seven per cent, or fifty seven, from the same five rows Five settlements, two totals, one honest question. Both answers below are arithmetically correct and they are nineteen and a half points apart. ### 1. Record each settlement properly Passes and entries, kept as two separate numbers. The learner does not store a percentage, because a percentage has already thrown away the thing that decides how much it should count. ### 2. Average the five rates Four small settlements at 90, 80, 70 and 90 per cent, and one large one at 55. The mean of those five figures is 77.0 per cent, and it is the number a spreadsheet gives you without being asked anything. ### 3. Divide the totals instead 253 passes out of 440 entries is 57.5 per cent. That is the wilayat's actual rate. Neither figure is a mistake in arithmetic. The mistake is answering how are the settlements doing on average when somebody asked how is the wilayat doing. Children work out the share for each bag and then for both together, and see for themselves that the second answer is not the average of the first two. ### For teenagers Python computes both figures from the same rows and prints the gap. The learner then writes the weighted version and checks it reproduces the totals answer exactly, which is the proof that the weighting was the missing piece. ### For adults The query changes from AVG of a computed column to SUM over SUM, the denominator is carried into every report, and any average of rates is labelled as one wherever it appears. The settlement names are real and published. The pass and entry counts are teaching values, because no public per-village result file exists to copy, and the page labels them as such. The arithmetic is a property of averaging rather than of these particular numbers, which is why it is worth an hour of anybody's time. Any physical location would be convenient for a minority and a long drive for everybody else. ### Nothing charged for the first lesson A real placement task, a real recommendation and no card requested. If the honest answer is a different course, that is what the teacher says before money is mentioned. ### Groups of five to eight Matched on level and objective rather than by which village somebody lives in, which is a grouping a physical school could never manage here. ### One to one when the goal is narrow A single teacher and a single learner for an examination date or one specific problem with a deadline attached to it. ### Two live lessons a week Eight in a normal month at a recurring agreed time, fixed once rather than rearranged around travel every week. ### Set to Oman, and to the season Oman is one and a half hours behind India. Harvest work, school terms, examination periods and Ramadan routines all belong in the conversation before a slot is fixed. The question that only a person thinks to ask A learner who averages a column of percentages has produced a number, and the screen offers no reason to doubt it. What changes them is somebody asking what that average is an average of, and then saying nothing at all while they discover the answer is rows, not learners. Because it gives every row one vote regardless of how many people that row represents.
