Numbers that arrive rounded are the numbers most likely to collide with a boundary, because boundaries are round too. ### Water older than the record of it The falaj here is described as more than 2,000 years old. Any century band built around that has to decide what more than means before it can put the village anywhere at all. ### A name that is also a place The Al Abri tribe takes its name from Misfat Al Abriyeen and Al Hamra. When a people, a village and a wilayat share a root, a single name column will eventually be asked to be three different things. Nine hundred to twelve hundred does not say what happens at nine hundred A band written as 900 to 1200 is not a definition. It is a shorthand with one end left open to interpretation. Two analysts reading the same label will build two different filters, both entirely reasonable, and their results will differ by whatever happens to be sitting on the line. Verified local facts ## Al Hamra facts with a trail behind them Each claim traced, and each one marked as measured or rounded. ### Nine hundred metres, exactly as published Misfat Al Abriyeen is recorded in an oasis at 900 metres above sea level, given alongside 3,000 feet. The page uses the figure as published and does not treat it as a precise survey. ### An oasis in the mountains The village sits in the western Hajar range, terraced into the slope. Terracing means that a single elevation for the village is itself a simplification of a place with many. ### A falaj system with real age The water canalization system here is described as dating back more than 2,000 years and still running. An age given as more than is a lower bound, and it belongs in a band only once somebody decides how to treat that. ### The village that names a tribe The Al Abri tribe derives its name from Misfat Al Abriyeen and Al Hamra. One root serving a family, a settlement and a wilayat is exactly the situation a flat name field cannot represent. ### A mud village that is still lived in Misfat is widely described as a mud village and remains inhabited and farmed rather than preserved as an exhibit. A record of a living place needs a date on it in a way a record of a ruin does not. ### Documented for heritage planning Al Hamra and Misfat Al Abriyin have been the subject of documentation and heritage management work. Where a place has been surveyed properly, the difference between a survey figure and a guidebook figure becomes worth minding. None of this is a claim about Modern Age Coders and no connection is implied. Al Hamra is here because it supplies a real value sitting exactly on a round boundary, which is the hardest kind of test case to invent convincingly. Signature project ## Ten villages, four bands, and totals of fourteen, nine and ten Three rules, all of them defensible, none of them written down anywhere, and three different answers from identical data. ### 1. Take ten elevations and four bands Bands of nought to three hundred, three hundred to six hundred, six hundred to nine hundred and nine hundred to twelve hundred. Ten villages, two of which sit at exactly 900 metres. Only the Misfat figure is published; the remaining elevations are teaching values, and the page says so. ### 2. Apply each of the three obvious rules Both ends included. Bottom included and top excluded. Bottom excluded and top included. Every one of these is what somebody means when they write 900 to 1200, and each is used by real software somewhere. ### 3. Add the band counts back up Both ends included gives 14 villages from a list of 10. Bottom included and top excluded gives 9 and quietly loses the highest village. Every rule is a correct implementation of an ambiguous instruction. The overcount is loud enough to notice if anybody totals the bands, and the undercount is silent, because a missing village does not announce itself. The only defence is checking that the bands sum to the population. Every figure above was computed before this was written. The child has to place it somewhere. The argument that follows is the lesson, and it happens entirely off screen. ### For teenagers The ten elevations in Python, banded under all three rules, printing each set of counts and its total. The learner then writes the assertion that the bands sum to the number of villages and watches two of the three rules fail it. ### For adults Band definitions state both endpoints, classifications are tested for coverage and exclusivity before use, and any grouping is reconciled against the source count as a matter of routine. The 900 metre elevation, the 3,000 foot equivalent, the more than 2,000 year old falaj, the Al Abri tribe naming and the mountain setting are published. The other nine elevations in the project are teaching values, because no per-village elevation table for the wilayat was found, and they are labelled as such in the project, here and in the FAQ. Teaching that arrives over a connection is indifferent to gradient in a way that a shared classroom never is. ### A first class with nothing attached A full lesson, a genuine task and a specific recommendation at the end of it. No card details are requested to arrange it, and no decision is asked for until a teacher has been seen teaching. ### Five to eight learners, grouped by ability What a learner can already do and where they are going decides the group. Altitude and address do not, which is a thing no local arrangement here could promise. ### One to one when the goal is specific A single teacher and a single learner, for a fixed examination or one particular gap that a group syllabus would have to work its way around. ### Eight lessons in an ordinary month Two live sessions a week, at a time chosen once when the learner joins rather than rebuilt around every change in the term or the weather. ### An hour and a half of clock difference That is the gap between Oman and India and it is settled once, at the start. School terms, working patterns, examination seasons and Ramadan are all discussed before a time is agreed. Two right answers and no error message A learner who bands the data one way is not wrong, and neither is the one who bands it the other. What moves them forward is a teacher putting both results side by side, asking which is correct, and letting the answer be that the question was never fully specified. FAQ ## Al Hamra coding class questions Local facts, teaching method and terms of service, answered separately. ### Is the 900 metre figure real? Yes. Misfat Al Abriyeen is published as sitting in an oasis at 900 metres above sea level, or 3,000 feet. Both are round numbers and the page treats them as published rather than surveyed. The other nine elevations in the project are teaching values and are labelled as such wherever they appear. ### Why is a band edge such a reliable source of error? Because the label hides the decision. Nine hundred to twelve hundred looks like a complete specification and is not one. Two competent people implement it differently, both are right, and the disagreement only ever surfaces if a value happens to sit exactly on the line. Round published figures sit on lines constantly. ### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Al Hamra? No. No premises are claimed in Al Hamra or anywhere in Ad Dakhiliyah. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building. ### Which of the three banding rules is correct? None of them is universally correct, which is the point. What is correct is stating which one you used and proving the bands cover the population once each. Bottom excluded and top included happens to reconcile on this data, and would not on data containing the lowest possible value. ### Can an adult in Al Hamra study rather than a school student? Yes, anyone up to 67. Adult routes run through Python, analytics and reporting. If you have ever had two age bands, two income brackets or two date ranges disagree about the same record, this is that problem with the lid off. A real grouping of your own works best as the exercise where the data is yours to share. ### What does a learner have at the end of this project? A band definition with both ends written out, a test proving the bands are complete and do not overlap, and a reconciliation against the source count. Those three apply to every classification anybody will ever build. ### How much do Al Hamra coding classes cost? The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency.
