## A valley that gets older as you walk into it

Wadi Bani Kharus is a cross-section through deep time laid out along a road, which makes it unusually easy to describe and unusually easy to describe wrongly.

### Twenty six kilometres of it

The valley runs twenty six km with a southwestern orientation, high mountains on both sides. A long, thin, well-defined thing with a measurement at each end is exactly the shape that invites somebody to interpolate.

### Half a billion years of difference

The limestone formations run from 90 million years old at the entrance to 600 million years in the distant parts. That is a range of 510 million years across a distance you could cycle in an afternoon.

### A working valley, not a museum

The wadi is cultivated with fruit trees and crops, and holds aflaj, water springs, medicinal herbs and archaeological inscriptions on stones and old houses. Living places produce messier data than exhibits do.

Interpolation is a guess with a formula attached

Joining two known values with a straight line is not reading the data. It is asserting that whatever happens between them happens at a constant rate. Sometimes that is true. In a stack of rock, where one layer can be a hundred metres thick and the next a metre, it is not.

Verified local facts

## Al Awabi facts with a trail behind them

Each claim traced, with what it covers and what it does not.

### A valley in the western Hajar

Wadi Bani Kharus lies in Wilayat Al-Awabi within the western Hajar range. Its position is what gives it the exposed section, and the exposed section is what makes the measurements possible at all.

### Twenty six kilometres, southwestern orientation

The valley is described as twenty six km long with a southwestern orientation. A stated length is what turns two ages into a gradient somebody will compute.

### Ninety million years at the entrance

The limestone at the mouth of the wadi is given as 90 million years old. This is one of the two endpoints the project rests on and it is used as published.

### Six hundred million years further in

The rock in the distant parts is given as 600 million years old. That is the other endpoint. Nothing published gives the ages in between, which is the entire opportunity for error.

### Aflaj, springs and inscriptions

The wadi holds many falajes, water springs, varied rock formations and archaeological inscriptions on stones and old houses. Several kinds of record in one valley, each with its own way of being dated.

### Plants, herbs and wildlife

It abounds with plants, flowers, medicinal herbs and wildlife alongside its fruit trees and crops. A biological record and a geological one describe the same kilometre on wildly different timescales.

Modern Age Coders has no involvement with the valley, its farms or its heritage and claims none. Al Awabi is used here because two published, trustworthy endpoints with nothing between them is the exact setup that produces confident invented numbers.

Signature project

## A hundred and two million years, invented by a ruler

The two numbers you were given are exactly right. Every number you produced from them is not.

### 1. Take the two published ages and the length

Ninety million years at the entrance, 600 million at the far end, 26 kilometres between them. All three are published. Nothing else about the interior is.

### 2. Assume it changes at a constant rate

That gives about 19.6 million years of age for every kilometre walked. It is one line of arithmetic, it honours both endpoints perfectly, and it produces an age for any point somebody asks about.

### 3. Compare it against a profile that steps

Rock does not accumulate evenly. Against a stepped profile the line is worst at 8 kilometres in, where it says 247 million years and the rock is 145 million: an error of 102 million years. The interior ages used for this comparison are teaching values, since none is published, and the page says so.

| Distance in | Straight line says | Stepped profile says | Error |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0 km, the entrance | 90 Ma | 90 Ma | none, it is an endpoint |
| 4 km | 168 Ma | 105 Ma | 63 Ma too old |
| 8 km | 247 Ma | 145 Ma | 102 Ma too old, the worst point |
| 12 km | 325 Ma | 250 Ma | 75 Ma too old |
| 18 km | 443 Ma | 455 Ma | 12 Ma too young |
| 26 km, the far end | 600 Ma | 600 Ma | none, it is an endpoint |

### Getting both endpoints right is what makes the middle believable

If the line missed at the ends, somebody would check it. It does not. It reproduces both published figures exactly, which is the strongest possible evidence that it works, and it is evidence of nothing at all: any straight line through two points hits both of them. The error at 8 km is 70 per cent of the true age there and a fifth of the whole range the valley spans. Every figure above was computed before this was written.

Reliable pipeline

## Interpolate if you must, then label what you invented

Five habits, none of them slow, and each one keeps a guess looking like a guess.

| Stage | Rule | What it prevents | What it gives you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mark | Flag every interpolated value as interpolated | A guess travelling as a measurement | A column that says what it knows |
| Justify | State why a constant rate is reasonable here | Linearity assumed by default | An assumption somebody can dispute |
| Distrust | Never treat endpoint agreement as validation | A line praised for hitting its own anchors | A real test instead of a tautology |
| Widen | Report interpolated values as ranges | False precision in the middle | Uncertainty that grows away from the data |
| Measure | Get one point in the middle if you can | A whole interior built on nothing | The single most valuable observation there is |

### For younger learners

Two marks on a long strip of paper, one at each end, and the child asked to guess what is halfway. Then the strip is unfolded and the middle turns out to be nothing like it. No screen and no arithmetic beyond counting.

### For teenagers

Python computes the linear age at every kilometre and prints it beside the stepped profile with the error in a third column. The learner then writes a function that refuses to return an interpolated value without a flag saying so.

### For adults

Interpolated values are stored flagged and never mixed with observations, linearity is argued rather than assumed, and interior estimates carry a widening band rather than a single number.

The 26 kilometre length, the southwestern orientation, the 90 million and 600 million year endpoints and the valley's aflaj, springs, herbs and inscriptions are published. The interior ages used for the comparison are teaching values, because no published profile of them was found, and that is stated in the project steps, here and in the FAQ. The behaviour is a property of interpolation and does not depend on the particular interior profile.

Learning ladder

## From a folded paper strip to code that flags what it invented

One free class is normally enough to place a learner honestly, which is rarely where a year group would.

## Live classes in a valley twenty six kilometres long

Villages strung along a single wadi are close on a map and far apart in practice, because there is only one road and it runs the long way.

### One road, twenty six kilometres

A valley with a single route means the far village is a real journey from the near one. Teaching sent down a connection costs the same at both ends of the wadi.

### A first lesson with nothing attached

A complete class with a genuine task, ending in a named recommendation. No card details to book it, and no commitment until somebody has watched a teacher work.

### Five to eight learners, grouped on ability

Cohorts are built from what a learner can do now and what they are aiming at. Position in the valley is not an input, which is precisely what a single classroom cannot say.

### One to one where the goal is narrow

A single teacher and a single learner, for a dated examination or one particular gap that a shared syllabus would have to detour around.

### Eight lessons in an ordinary month

Two live sessions weekly at a slot chosen once when a learner joins, not rebuilt each week around school, farm and weather.

### An hour and a half between the clocks

That is the gap from Oman to India, settled at the start. Terms, working hours, examination seasons and Ramadan are all raised before a time is agreed.

A line that honours its endpoints looks like a line that works

The learner checks the two ends, finds them perfect, and concludes the method is sound. What breaks that is a teacher pointing out that any straight line through two points hits both of them, and then waiting while the learner works out what that does and does not prove.

FAQ

## Al Awabi coding class questions

The valley, the method and the commercial terms, taken one at a time.

### Are the rock ages real?

The two endpoints are published: 90 million years at the entrance of Wadi Bani Kharus and 600 million years in the distant parts, across a valley of twenty six km. The interior ages used to show the error are teaching values, because no published profile was found, and the page says so wherever they appear.

### Why is hitting both endpoints not evidence that the method works?

Because it is arithmetically guaranteed. Any straight line drawn through two points passes through both of them, so agreement at the ends tells you nothing whatever about the middle. It is the most reassuring useless check available, which is why people stop there.

### Is there a Modern Age Coders centre in Al Awabi?

No. No premises are claimed in Al Awabi or anywhere in Al Batinah South. Classes are live online and need a laptop or desktop, working audio, a current browser and a stable connection. The page describes where the service reaches, not a building.

### When is interpolating between two points acceptable?

When you can argue that the quantity really does change at a steady rate over that span, when you mark the result as interpolated, and when you report it with a band that widens as you get further from real observations. All three, not one of them.

### Do you take adults in Al Awabi as well as school students?

Yes, to 67. The adult track covers Python, analytics and reporting. If you have ever filled a gap between two reporting dates with a straight line and then had somebody quote the invented middle back to you, this project is your own week described. Bring that data where it is yours to bring.

### What is a learner left with here?

Interpolated values that are flagged as interpolated, a stated reason for assuming a constant rate, and a band that widens away from the observations. None of it depends on the tool they happen to be using.

### How much do Al Awabi coding classes cost?

The first class is free. Standard group tuition is USD 100 per month for two live lessons each week, normally eight lessons monthly. Standard private tuition is USD 150 per month for one learner with one teacher on the same usual frequency. Course, format, recurring time and availability are confirmed before payment.

### What is the class size for Al Awabi learners?

A group normally contains five to eight compatible learners. Compatibility includes current level, learning pace and objective, not age alone. Private tuition is one learner with one teacher. If no suitable group is ready, a learner can discuss private tuition or wait for an appropriate cohort.

### How are Al Awabi class times arranged?

Oman is one and a half hours behind India. The teacher and learner agree a recurring time before payment, generally for two live lessons each week. Friday and Saturday options may be discussed subject to availability. School, work and travel schedules, examinations and Ramadan routines should be mentioned before confirmation.

### What happens in the free Al Awabi class?

We establish what the learner wants to be able to do and set one task pitched there. A child guesses the middle of a folded strip and then unfolds it. A teenager interpolates a profile and measures the worst error. An adult is asked which numbers in one of their own reports were filled in rather than observed. A course, a format, a time and the USD fee follow. The class is free.
