> Coding classes for adults in Australia: Python, data and web taught live online around work for ages 18 to 67, with projects from real tasks. First class free.

In short

Coding classes for adults teach programming to people already working or studying, usually Python, SQL or web development, through projects drawn from real tasks such as cleaning data or automating reports. In Australia, the ABS found 34% of people aged 15 to 74 studied or trained in 2024-25, with lack of time the main barrier to work training. Modern Age Coders teaches adults aged 18 to 67 live online, around working hours, and the first class is free.

Adults learning

## Adults and learning in Australia: the latest national figures

Every four years the Bureau of Statistics asks Australians how they study and train. Its newest release, for 2024-25, shows how adults learn and what gets in the way.

| Measure | Published figure |
| --- | --- |
| Aged 15 to 74 and in any study or training over the past year | 34% (6.8 million), down from 39% in 2020-21 |
| Participation in work-related training | 19%, down from 23% in 2020-21 |
| Main barrier to work-related training, among those with barriers | Too much work or not enough time, 44% |
| Most recent work-related training done online or virtually | 49%, down from 55% in 2020-21 |
| Any study or training, ages 25 to 34 | 35.8% |
| Any study or training, ages 35 to 44 | 32.5% |
| Any study or training, ages 45 to 54 | 30.3% |

### Time is the real obstacle

When adults who wanted work-related training did not get it, the most common main reason was too much work or not enough time. Courses designed for adults have to respect that, not ignore it.

Our lessons are an hour or less, booked in evenings or at weekends, and every lesson ends with a task small enough for a lunch break.

### Online is now normal

Almost half of recent work-related training was delivered online or virtually. Learning from home is no longer a compromise; for many working adults it is the only practical way.

Live online lessons keep the part that matters most in a classroom: a teacher who sees your screen and your mistakes.

Figures copied as published by the ABS in its [2024-25 adult learning release](https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/people/education/work-related-training-and-adult-learning/latest-release), which we read on 13 October 2026.

Routes

## The routes open to an Australian adult who wants to code

There is no single right route. A formal qualification, a degree, self-study and live classes each suit different goals, and many adults combine two.

| Route | What it involves | Suits adults who |
| --- | --- | --- |
| TAFE Certificate IV in Information Technology | A nationally recognised qualification; at TAFE NSW, 20 units of competency, including 7 core and 13 speciality units | Want a formal qualification with a broad IT base |
| University study | A degree or graduate certificate over semesters | Can commit years and want the deepest theory |
| Self-paced online courses | Videos and exercises, no teacher | Are very self-directed and have a clear goal |
| Live classes, like ours | Weekly lessons with a teacher, projects from your work | Want structure and feedback without a formal qualification |

### What the TAFE route asks

TAFE NSW lists "Apply introductory programming techniques ICTPRG302" among the core units of its Certificate IV, and says the qualification "does not have any pre-requisite courses", while recommending prior IT study or equivalent skills.

Some adults take our lessons first to build those skills, then enrol. Others take both at once.

### What we are, and are not

We are a live tutoring service, not a registered training organisation. Our classes do not lead to a nationally recognised qualification, and we say so before anyone enrols.

What they give is skill and confidence, shown in projects you can use at work the following week.

Source, read 13 October 2026: TAFE NSW, [Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120)](https://www.tafensw.edu.au/course-areas/information-and-communication-technology/courses/certificate-iv-in-information-technology-programming--ICT40120-01). Other TAFEs package their units differently.

A worked example

## Three thousand phone numbers, one thousand people

A typical first adult project: three exports of the same contacts, from a sales system, a spreadsheet and an email list, need merging. The phone number should be the key, but every system writes it differently.

To practise without touching anyone's real data, we generated a synthetic contact list: 1,000 people (789 with Australian mobiles, 167 with landlines and 44 overseas), each appearing three times in a random format, 3,000 entries in all. Formats included `0491 570 156`, `+61 491 570 156`, `0061 491 570 156`, `61491570156`, `+61 (0) 491 570 156` and landlines with or without an area code; 92 entries carried an extension. We then grouped the entries four ways and counted how many groups each method produced. The right answer is 1,000.

| Method | Groups found | People split across groups | Groups mixing two people |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Exact text | 2,632 | 981 | 0 |
| Digits only | 2,337 | 932 | 0 |
| Last nine digits | 1,141 | 138 | 0 |
| A parser that understands Australian numbers | 1,051 | 51 | 0 |

### Why the shortcut is popular

Taking the last nine digits throws away 0, 61, 0061 and the (0) in one move, and it took the groups from 2,337 down to 1,141. On the 2,295 plain Australian mobile entries it was right every single time.

### Where it breaks

Extensions add digits to the end, so the last nine are wrong. Landlines typed without an area code have only eight. And 75 overseas entries were given keys that look exactly like Australian numbers, which nobody would notice.

### What the parser does instead

It removes extensions, handles every Australian prefix, keeps overseas numbers with their country code, and refuses to guess: 59 landline entries with no area code were flagged for a person to check, which is the only reason 51 people remained split.

### When the simple version is the right one

If a list comes from one system that only ever stores Australian mobiles, last nine digits is correct, shorter and easier for a colleague to read. We say so in class, and we expect learners to check their data before reaching for a cleverer tool.

The parser is worth writing only when the data really is mixed.

### The habits this teaches

Count before and after every step. Keep the original column. Flag what you cannot fix instead of guessing. Never print or share real contact details while practising; use generated data, as we did.

The same habits apply to names, dates, addresses and almost every other messy field at work.

The sample number shown above is the placeholder our own booking form uses. The synthetic list was generated with a fixed random seed and is not published; no real contact data was used.

Projects

## What adults build in our classes

Strong first projects come from your own week. These are the kinds learners bring to us most often.

| The chore | The program | The skills inside it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Copying figures between spreadsheets every week | A script that reads, joins and writes the files | Reading CSV and Excel files, joining tables |
| Renaming hundreds of photos or scans | A renamer with a dry-run mode | Files, paths and safe testing |
| Merging contact lists | The phone-number parser above | Text cleaning, validation and counting |
| A website for a small business or club | A responsive site with a contact form | HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript |
| Answering the same data question each month | A small SQL database and saved queries | Tables, keys and queries |
| Using AI tools at work safely | A checklist and a test set for AI output | Judgement, verification and privacy |

Adults who want to change careers entirely have different questions; we answer those separately rather than here. Learners in their fifties and sixties may prefer our page on [learning to code over 50](/learn-to-code-over-50-australia).

Fitting it in

## Making lessons fit a working week

A course that assumes free evenings will be abandoned by week four. We plan around the week you actually have.

### Short, regular lessons

An hour or less, once or twice a week, at a fixed time. Regularity beats length.

### Practice in small pieces

Tasks of fifteen to twenty minutes that fit a lunch break or a train ride, never a weekend of homework.

### Busy weeks allowed

Work trips and deadlines happen. Lessons can move, and the plan bends rather than breaks.

Progress

## Four stages for adult learners

With weekly lessons and short practice, most adults reach the third stage within two or three terms.

| Stage | What you can do |
| --- | --- |
| 1. Reading | Follow a short program and explain each line |
| 2. Scripting | Write a script that saves you real time on one task |
| 3. Building | Combine files, data and logic into a tool others can use |
| 4. Maintaining | Test, document and safely change your own code months later |

### I have never coded. Where do I begin?

With Python, almost always. Its plain syntax lets you think about the task rather than punctuation.

The first lesson gets a small program running on your own computer.

### Who else is in an adult group?

Working adults at a similar stage, from many kinds of job. School students are taught in their own groups.

Groups are matched by stage, not by job title, and one-to-one lessons remain an option.

## Questions about coding classes for adults in Australia

### What are coding classes for adults?

They are programming lessons designed for people already working or studying, usually in Python, SQL or web development, with projects taken from real tasks and lesson times that fit around work.

### How many Australian adults study or train?

The ABS found that 34% of people aged 15 to 74, about 6.8 million, studied or trained in the 12 months before its 2024-25 survey, down from 39% in 2020-21.

### Do your classes give a recognised qualification?

No. We are a live tutoring service, not a registered training organisation. Adults who need a qualification can look at TAFE or university, and some take our lessons alongside.

### Which language should an adult learn first?

Python for most people, because it reads clearly and is useful for automation and data. Adults focused on websites may start with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

### How much time do I need each week?

One lesson of an hour or less and two or three short practice sessions of about twenty minutes is enough to make steady progress.

### Can I work on my own work data?

We practise on generated or public data, never real customer or personal records. Once you know the method, you apply it at work under your employer's rules.

### Are lessons in the evening?

Yes. Evening, weekend and lunchtime lessons are arranged in your state's own time.

### What does it cost?

The first class is free and needs no card. Monthly group and one-to-one fees are in the fees section above.
