# How much do coding classes for kids cost in Australia?

**Short answer:** anything from nothing at all, at volunteer-run clubs such as Code Club Australia, to paid classes sold by the term, holiday camps sold by the day and private tutors paid by the hour. Our live online coding classes cost **$100 a month in US dollars** in a small group or **$150 a month** one to one, for eight one-hour lessons, which works out at $12.50 or $18.75 a lesson.

Below: the main ways Australian families pay for coding, how each one is usually charged, the costs that are easy to miss, what a school term of lessons comes to, and a checklist for judging value. We quote only figures we could read at their source.

## The courses behind the price

A price only means something next to what it buys. These are the courses most Australian families start with, each taught live by a teacher who stays with your child from week to week. Every price on this page is in US dollars.

The market, by format

## The main ways Australian families pay for coding

Paid providers set their own prices, and many show them only inside a booking system, so this table describes how each format is usually charged rather than quoting figures we could not read at the source.

| Format | How it is usually charged | What to check first |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Volunteer coding club | Free. Code Club Australia describes itself as "Free coding clubs" for Australian kids aged 8 to 13 | Whether a club meets near you, and how often (Code Club Australia, read 7 October 2026) |
| School or library club | Often free or a small charge; set by the school or library | Who leads it, and whether it carries on next term |
| After-school class at a venue | Usually a fee for the whole term, paid at the start | The number of sessions in the term, travel time, and refunds if your child stops |
| Holiday coding camp | Usually priced per day or per program, often with sibling or early-booking discounts | Hours per day, the ratio of children to instructors, and what a child takes home |
| Private tutor | Usually an hourly rate, set by the tutor | What they have actually built and taught, and the cancellation rule |
| Modern Age Coders, live online | $100 a month in US dollars in a group of 15 to 20, or $150 a month one to one, for eight one-hour lessons | Our own price; no enrolment fee and no term contract |

We read Code Club Australia's own site on 6 October 2026; it says Code Club Australia "is part of the Telstra Foundation". We tried to read published prices from several paid Australian providers; their pages either loaded prices through a booking system or refused automated reading, so we have not quoted them.

Behind the number

## Six things that change what coding classes cost

### Hours of real teaching

A two-hour session with a long snack break and a 50-minute focused lesson are not the same product. Divide the price by the minutes a teacher actually spends teaching.

### Children per teacher

A room of twenty with one instructor is cheaper per child than a group of six, and the child gets far less help. Ask for the ratio, not the room size.

### Venue or screen

Classes in a hired room carry the cost of the room and your own travel. Online classes remove both, which is a large part of why they can cost less per hour.

### Kits and hardware

Robotics and electronics programs often include a kit in the fee. Scratch and Python need nothing but a computer, so a pure coding class should not charge for equipment.

### Term or month

Paying for a whole term upfront is normal in Australia, and it means paying for weeks your child may miss. Monthly billing costs the same per lesson and is easier to stop.

### Continuity

The quiet cost of cheaper options is starting over: a new club, a new instructor, the same first lessons again. One teacher across terms is worth more than any single term's discount.

Our arithmetic

## What a school term of live lessons comes to

Australian families think in terms, so here is our monthly price turned into a term. We used the Victorian government's published 2026 term dates; other states' terms differ by a few days.

| Victorian school term, 2026 | Dates | School weeks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Term 1 | Tuesday 27 January to Thursday 2 April | 10, the first and last short |
| Term 2 | Monday 20 April to Friday 26 June | 10 |
| Term 3 | Monday 13 July to Friday 18 September | 10 |
| Term 4 | Monday 5 October to Friday 18 December | 11 |

**A ten-week term, worked through:** at two live lessons a week, a ten-week term holds 20 lessons. At $12.50 a lesson in a group, that is about USD 250 for the term; at $18.75 a lesson one to one, about USD 375. We still bill by the month, not by the term, so a family that stops after four weeks pays for one month, not ten weeks.

Term dates from the Victorian Government's school term dates page, read 7 October 2026. The per-term figures are our own arithmetic from our monthly price and eight lessons a month.

Read the small print

## The costs families tend to miss

**Upfront terms.** A term paid in advance includes the weeks of illness, sport carnivals and family trips. Ask whether missed sessions can be made up or credited.

**Enrolment and materials fees.** Some providers add a joining fee, a kit or a workbook. Ask for the total for the first term, not only the weekly figure.

**Camp extras.** Holiday camps can charge separately for early drop-off, late pick-up or lunch. Those add up over a week.

**Travel.** Two drives a week to a venue across a whole year is a real cost in time and fuel, especially in outer suburbs and regional towns.

**Software.** Scratch and Python are free to use, so a beginner course should not need paid software. Engines for older students may have their own licence terms.

**With us:** no enrolment fee, no kit, no term contract. You pay month by month and can stop at the end of any month.

Price the teaching

## How to judge whether a coding class is worth the money

- Does your child build the project themselves, or copy steps from a screen?
- Can your child explain, in their own words, what their program does?
- Is it the same teacher from week to week, and do they know your child's name and level?
- How many children does each teacher look after at once?

- Is there a free class or a trial you can watch before paying?
- Is the full first-term cost clear, including any joining fees and kits?
- What happens if your child stops halfway through a term?
- Is there a plan for next term, or does every term start from scratch?

Choosing

## Group or one to one, and which course?

### Choose a group if

- your child enjoys working alongside other children
- they are at a similar starting point to a beginner group
- you want the lowest monthly cost for steady weekly lessons

Groups hold 15 to 20 children of a similar age and level.

### Choose one to one if

- your child moves quickly and gets bored waiting
- they are shy and go quiet in a group
- a teenager has one large project they want to finish

One child, one teacher, and the pace set entirely around them.

Common questions

## Coding class costs: what Australian parents ask

How much do coding classes for kids cost in Australia?

It ranges from nothing at all, at volunteer clubs such as Code Club Australia, to paid term classes, holiday camps priced by the day and private tutors priced by the hour. Paid providers set their own prices and many only show them on a booking page, so compare the cost per hour of real teaching rather than the headline figure. The format table sets out how each option usually charges.

Are there free coding classes for kids in Australia?

Yes. Code Club Australia describes itself as free coding clubs for Australian children aged 8 to 13, and it is part of the Telstra Foundation. Clubs run in schools and libraries, usually led by volunteers, so availability depends on whether a club runs near you.

What is the cheapest way to start coding?

Scratch and Python are both free to use, and a free club or a free first lesson costs nothing. Paying makes sense when a child wants a teacher who knows them, regular feedback and a steady plan from one term to the next.

Is a group class worth it for coding?

Usually, for children who are happy to work alongside others and are roughly at the same level as the group. Our groups hold 15 to 20 children. A very quick learner, a shy child or a teenager with one large project often gets more from one-to-one lessons.

Are there extra costs on top of the class fee?

Sometimes. Watch for enrolment fees, robotics kits, paid software, payment for a whole term upfront and travel to a venue. With us there is no enrolment fee and no term contract, and the software used in early courses is free.

Do I have to pay for a whole school term?

Not with us; families pay month by month and can stop at the end of any month. Many Australian providers do bill by the term, so check what happens if your child stops halfway through.

Why are your prices in US dollars?

We are an online school based in India teaching families in more than 25 countries, and we bill outside India in US dollars, so the page shows one currency throughout. Your card provider converts the charge into Australian dollars.

Can we try a class before paying?

Yes. The [first class is free](/book-demo) and needs no card. If you would rather have a class today or tomorrow, [book a Priority Demo](/priority-demo): a full class of about 45 to 60 minutes. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee.

## Judge the teaching before you pay for any of it.

In the free first class your child builds something real with a teacher, and you see exactly what a month of lessons would contain. No card needed.
