## Missouri high schools offering computer science, 2018 to 2024

The share of Missouri public high schools offering foundational computer science, read cell by cell from the Code.org 2025 data download on 17 October 2026.

| School year | Missouri | What changed |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2018 to 2019 | 38% | Starting point in the series |
| 2019 to 2020 | 50% | A jump of twelve points |
| 2020 to 2021 | 49% | Flat |
| 2021 to 2022 | 50% | Flat |
| 2022 to 2023 | 57.7% | The highest value in the series |
| 2023 to 2024 | 56.3%, 310 of 551 high schools | Slightly down; the data credits Missouri’s own education agency |
| 2024 to 2025 | No value published | Left blank in the data, not estimated here |

### Read the shape

One big step between 2018 and 2020, three years of standing still, a second step in 2022 to 2023, then a small slip. That is not a steady climb, and a straight trend line through it would hide the plateau.

### Read the gap

Code.org prints the national share as 60% for 2023 to 2024. Missouri’s 56.3% sits a few points below it, so the state’s position is close to the middle rather than at either end.

### Read the blank

There is no Missouri figure for 2024 to 2025 in this release. We leave the cell empty. Filling it with a guess, even a sensible one, would turn a published series into our own invention.

Students, not just schools

## How many Missouri students take computer science, and how many schools offer AP

A course on the timetable and a student in the seat are different things. These are the participation and AP school figures for Missouri as published.

| Measure | Missouri | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Missouri high schoolers in a CS course, 2023 to 2024 | 7,804 of 273,338, or 2.86% | Code.org (2025), which takes the enrollment base from NCES, Fall 2022 |
| Participation, 2022 to 2023 | 2.9% | Code.org (2025), participation tab |
| National participation, 2023 to 2024 | 6.4% | Code.org (2025), national row |
| Schools with AP exams, 2023 then 2024 | 282, then 306 | College Board, School Report of AP Exams by State |
| Of those, public | 212, then 238 | College Board, same report |
| Of those, non-public | 70, then 68 | College Board, same report |

Put the two halves side by side and a pattern appears. More than half of Missouri high schools list computer science, yet fewer than three students in a hundred were enrolled in it in 2023 to 2024, under half the national rate printed in the same release. Meanwhile the number of Missouri schools giving AP exams of any kind rose by 24 between 2023 and 2024, almost all of them public. For a motivated student that is a real opening: AP Computer Science A and Principles are exams anyone can prepare for, even where the school has no matching class.

### Citing the data

Code.org (2025). 2025 State of AI + CS Education. We quote individual Missouri values from its data download and do not republish the dataset. AP school counts are from the College Board School Report of AP Exams by State, 2023 to 2024.

Signature project

## Did Kansas City trim more trees each year? A trend project on city open data

Kansas City, Missouri publishes a small public-domain table of trees its crews trimmed and removed, quarter by quarter. Sixteen rows are enough to teach the three habits every trend analysis needs.

| Fiscal year label | Trimmed (our sum) | Removed (our sum) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| FY 2012-2013 | 2,853 | 1,741 |
| FY 2013-2014 | 5,834 | 3,634 |
| FY 2014-2015 | 5,766 | 2,257 |
| FY 2015-2016 | 7,222 | 2,771 |

### 1. Put time in order

The file does not list quarters in sequence: FY 2012-2013 Q4 sits fifteenth of sixteen lines, and Q3 of 2014-2015 comes before Q1. Students parse the label into a year and a quarter and sort on both before drawing anything.

### 2. Aggregate by year

Summing four quarters per fiscal year gives the table above. Trimming rises from 2,853 to 7,222 across the four years by our arithmetic, while removals peak in FY 2013-2014 and fall back.

### 3. Ask what is missing

The rows stop in 2016, and a second column headed Fiscal Year is empty in every row. A trend that ends nine years ago says nothing about today, and a careful analyst writes that sentence before any conclusion.

Students then compare a single quarter with its year. The busiest quarter for trimming was FY 2015-2016 Q4, with 2,321 trees; the busiest for removals was FY 2013-2014 Q1, with 1,710. Plotting quarters instead of years shows how much the yearly totals smooth away, which is exactly the judgment they will need when they read a state access series like the one higher up this page.

### Whose numbers these are

The quarterly counts are the city’s, published under a public domain licence. The yearly sums and every comparison are ours, made for teaching. We do not know how the city defines its fiscal year, so the page keeps the city’s labels instead of converting them to calendar years.

Class times

## Central Time from St. Louis to Joplin

The IANA time zone database lists Missouri under US central time, the zone it calls America/Chicago.

### Summer offset

During Central Daylight Time, India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of Springfield and Columbia. Our teachers absorb that gap; families simply pick a Central Time slot.

### Winter offset

Under Central Standard Time the gap is 11 hours 30 minutes. Bookings are always written in Central Time so no one has to convert anything.

### This year’s changes

Missouri moves back an hour on November 1, 2026 and forward an hour on March 14, 2027. A class time confirmed in Central Time stays put for the family on both dates.

The tree file and the clock teach one idea

Dates are data. A quarter label that sorts wrongly and a reminder that drifts by an hour in November are the same kind of bug: treating time as plain text or a fixed number instead of using a proper date or zone such as America/Chicago.

## A route through computer science that does not depend on the timetable

Grade bands are guides; a free class sets the real starting point.

## An AI tool will draw the trend line. Will it notice the rows are out of order?

Often it will not, and that is the case for learning to code yourself.

Hand the Kansas City file to a chatbot and ask for a chart, and you may get a neat line that zigzags because the quarters were plotted in file order. Nothing in the output warns you. A student who has sorted dates by hand sees the problem at once.

The same applies to the state figures above: a model asked for Missouri’s 2024 to 2025 access rate might produce a confident number where the published data has none. Knowing what a dataset contains, and saying so, is a skill only practice builds.

Missouri students who learn to check a trend before trusting it will use AI tools well; the ones who skip that step will be used by them. The longer argument is in [the case for coding skills when AI drafts the code](/blog/is-coding-worth-learning-2026).

Delivery

## Live classes for Missouri, whether the school has a CS teacher or not

With roughly 44% of Missouri high schools showing no computer science course in the latest count, an online classroom is often the simplest way in.

### From any Missouri town

A student in Cape Girardeau and one in St. Joseph can sit in the same live class, each at a kitchen table, without anyone driving to a campus.

### Planned around US school

Lessons follow US grade levels and the May AP calendar. When a teacher at school sets graded work, our role stops at explaining the concepts; the submission is written by the student alone.

### Free first lesson

One real class with a teacher, then a suggested level, course and time in writing. No card is requested.

### Level-matched batches

A batch is fifteen to twenty students at one level, from Missouri and other states.

### Private lessons

One teacher, one student, for AP preparation, competitions or a faster pace.

### Flexible times

Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays.

Online only, taught from India

There is no Modern Age Coders office in Missouri, and the page claims none. Students need a computer, sound and a dependable internet connection.

Fees

## What Missouri families pay

Three figures, shown below in full.

First class**USD 0**

A full first class without charge, ending in a recommended level, course and time slot.

Group tuition**USD 100**

A month of batch classes with fifteen to twenty students at the same level.

Private tuition**USD 150**

FAQ

## Missouri coding and AI questions

Short answers based on the published figures.

### What share of Missouri high schools offer computer science?

Code.org reports 310 of 551 Missouri high schools, or 56.3%, offering computer science in 2023 to 2024, up from 38% in 2018 to 2019. Its 2025 release has no Missouri value for 2024 to 2025.

### How many Missouri students take computer science?

The same release counts 7,804 of 273,338 Missouri high school students, or 2.86%, enrolled in computer science in 2023 to 2024, against a national rate of 6.4%.

### Is computer science a graduation requirement in Missouri?

We could not verify Missouri policy: the state education department and statute sites refused our requests in October 2026, so this page prints no requirement either way. Check your district's graduation handbook directly.

### How many Missouri schools give AP exams?

The College Board counts 282 Missouri schools with AP exams in 2023 and 306 in 2024, of which 238 were public schools in 2024.

### Can a Missouri student take AP Computer Science without a school course?

Our AP Computer Science A course teaches the full exam content whether or not the school runs the class. How and where the exam is booked is set by the College Board, so read its AP Students pages early in the school year; 306 Missouri schools gave AP exams in 2024.

### What time zone are classes booked in?

Central Time. The IANA database lists Missouri under US central time, and Missouri clocks change on November 1, 2026 and March 14, 2027.

### When can classes run for Missouri families?

Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays, always confirmed in Central Time.

### Do you have a center in St. Louis or Kansas City?

No. All teaching is live and online from India, so families in either city, or anywhere else in Missouri, join the same way.

### What is the Kansas City tree project?

Students download the city's public-domain table of trees trimmed and removed from FY 2012-2013 to FY 2015-2016, sort the out-of-order quarters, total each year and explain why a trend ending in 2016 cannot describe today.
