In 2025 the busiest month, August at 254,703, was 2.16 times the quietest, January at 117,909. ### Same month, a year earlier Setting a month beside the same month a year before removes most of the season with no model at all. Every one of the 18 months from January 2025 to June 2026 was busier than its counterpart twelve months earlier. ### Dublin went the other way Dublin Airport's raw count rose 32.2 percent from the first quarter of 2026 to the second. Seasonally adjusted, it fell 2.5 percent, while Shannon's adjusted count rose. The raw numbers made both airports look as if they were growing. ### A season is not news: compare like with like The statistics office adjusts each airport separately with X-13-ARIMA, a method built by the U.S. Census Bureau, fitted to monthly counts back to January 2012. Its background notes say the model allows for calendar effects such as the timing of Easter and for outliers and level shifts, and that the seasonal factors are updated every quarter. That last point matters: an adjusted figure for a recent quarter can be revised when the next quarter arrives, and the office leaves its trend column blank for the latest three quarters. A seasonally adjusted number is an estimate with a method behind it, and the method is published so that anyone can check it. The learner's version fits in about forty lines of Python. First it checks the input: the monthly counts from table TAM08, added up by quarter, must match the raw quarters in table TAQ01 exactly, and they do, at 427,655 and 728,654. Then it takes a centred twelve-month moving average, divides each month by it, averages those ratios for each calendar month over 2023, 2024 and 2025, and scales the twelve factors to average one. Dividing each month of 2026 by its factor gives 584,620 for the first quarter and 636,604 for the second. The second quarter lands within 0.2 percent of the office's 637,754; the first is 2.3 percent below its 598,385; and so the change comes out at 8.9 percent against 6.6. Close on the level, two points apart on the change, and the gap is the lesson: a fixed average of three years cannot see Easter moving or a new route starting, and X-13 is built to. ### Why 2020 and 2021 are left out In April 2020 Shannon handled 85 passengers, in May 17 and in June 18. Seasonal factors estimated from those months would describe a closure, not a season, so the factors here use 2023 to 2025 only. ### Easter moves Easter Sunday fell on 31 March in 2024 and in April in 2019, 2023, 2025 and 2026. April passengers were 1.17 times March's in 2024 and between 1.28 and 1.36 times in the other four years. One March Easter is an illustration, not proof. ### Adjusted, quarter by quarter From the second quarter of 2023 to the second quarter of 2026, the office's adjusted Shannon count rose in 12 of 13 quarters. Over the same stretch the raw count swung between a fall of 29.9 percent and a rise of 70.4. Where the season lives ## The spring rise is not spread evenly across routes The statistics office publishes the ten busiest routes at each main airport every quarter, counting arrivals and departures together. Krakow, Lanzarote, Tenerife Sur and Wroclaw are in the first list and missing from the second. ### A steady route Heathrow was the busiest route in both quarters and grew 13.4 percent, against 52.4 for Stansted. A steady route and a strongly seasonal one can add up to a total that hides both. ### The learner's question Which routes explain most of the 70.4 percent? Summing the change route by route and sorting it is a short piece of code, and it turns one headline number into a list that can be checked. What these numbers are not A passenger here is a movement through the airport, not a person. The route totals add arrivals to departures, so Heathrow's 38,414 arrivals and 37,020 departures make its 75,434, and a return trip is counted twice. The counts cover commercial passengers only, and at Shannon and Dublin they leave out transit passengers on fuel-stop flights. None of these figures describes the people who live in Shannon town or the people who work at the airport. One takes the train. ### Travel to school Of 2,543 journeys to school, college or childcare, 1,104 are made on foot, 43.4 percent against 28.3 percent across all 867 towns combined, with 866 as a car passenger, 201 by bus and 120 learners driving. ### What residents work in The industry table, which counts 4,590 at work, puts 1,548 in manufacturing, 33.7 percent against 11.2 percent across all towns combined, and 677 in transport and communications, 14.7 percent against 10.4. Asked about home-working, 1,045 Shannon workers said they do some of it, 3,077 said they never do and 407 gave no answer. The small difference between the 4,529 in the travel table and the 4,590 in the industry table is two census tables counting slightly different groups; neither is an error. Two named places The Shannon Aviation Museum gives its address as Link Road, Shannon, Smithstown, Co. Clare, V14 PH34, opens Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and runs an aviation camp from age 8 and an academy from 13. St Patrick's Comprehensive School gives its address as Shannon, Co. Clare, V14 Y434. Neither has any connection with us. Learning here ## How Shannon learners are taught Most weeks bring a pair of lessons, and the teacher is teaching in real time for the whole of each one. ### Children Shannon's census-night age table has 1,033 children between six and twelve. They begin with block code, making patterns that repeat, like a year that loops through its seasons. ### Teenagers The same table has 859 teenagers of thirteen to eighteen, who are ready for Python, web pages, AI projects and time-series work of the kind on this page. ### Adults Adults start from whatever they already know, which may be nothing, and the first lesson sets the course. An AI assistant handed Shannon's first and second quarters will often compute the 70.4 percent rise and describe it as strong growth, perhaps with reasons. The arithmetic is right and the conclusion is not, because most of that rise happens every year. The same assistant, given Dublin's raw figures, would report growth there too, where the adjusted count fell. With the adjustment written, the learner puts three questions to the assistant: which periods are being compared, whether the figures are raw or seasonally adjusted, and what the same quarter a year earlier shows. Those questions turn a confident sentence into a checkable one. Working out a percentage change takes one line of code. Knowing whether the season caused it is the skill.
