Each share above is worked from its own table's total, since census tables are adjusted separately to protect privacy and do not always agree to the last person. Our Lichfield groups draw on the city and the villages around it. Roads, pools and spires ## A Roman crossing, a bishop's seat and a city split by water From the Victoria County History of Staffordshire, volume 14, which covers Lichfield, and from Lichfield Cathedral's own history page. ### The 70s At Wall, just south-west of Lichfield, the county history records a fort built in the 50s or 60s and Watling Street built to its south in the 70s. The settlement there was Letocetum, from a Celtic name meaning grey wood. ### 669 The cathedral says St Chad came in 669 to be the first bishop in Lichfield. The county history thinks it probable that Ryknild Street influenced the choice of Lichfield for a bishop's seat. ### By 1323 The two west spires and the central spire were probably finished by 1323. The siege of 1646 brought down the central spire; it was complete again by April 1666. Lichfield Cathedral calls itself the only English medieval cathedral to have three spires, known locally as the Ladies of the Vale, and the county history records that it was rededicated on Christmas Eve 1669 after the Civil War damage. Two pools lie beside it, Minster Pool to the south and the larger Stowe Pool to the east. The county history quotes Daniel Defoe in the 1720s saying that Minster Pool 'parts Lichfield, as it were, into two cities, one is called the Town, and the other the Close', and notes that the stream running out of Stowe Pool flows north as Curborough brook. It also calls Lichfield Samuel Johnson's native city. We have no connection with Lichfield Cathedral or the Victoria County History, and their words are quoted as theirs. On the National Heritage List Historic England lists the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Chad (list entry 1298431), the Johnson Birthplace Museum (1292492) and Darwin House (1187355) at Grade I, all listed on 5 February 1952. The Roman site at Letocetum is a scheduled monument (1006108), scheduled on 21 May 1953. Signature project ## How straight are the roads with Roman names? Ordnance Survey draws a road as a chain of points. Join the pieces Open Roads splits every road at each junction. Chaining the pieces through their shared end points rebuilds one continuous line for each road. ### 2. Measure the wander Sinuosity is the length along the road divided by the straight-line distance between its ends. A ruler-straight road scores exactly 1. ### 3. Simplify Run Douglas-Peucker at 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 metres and count what survives. A straight road collapses to a handful of points; a winding one fights back. ### Making the comparison fair Longer lines wander more, so comparing a 26 km road with a 10 km one is unfair. We slid a 2 km window along each road, starting every 250 metres, and measured each window. The A38 had a median sinuosity of 1.0009 across 55 windows, and 65% of them were under 1.005. The A5 had a median of 1.0164 across 98 windows, only 12% under 1.005, because its line includes modern roundabouts and bypasses; the county history records that the bypass taking traffic away from Wall was completed in 1965. The A51's median was 1.0588, and none of its 35 windows came under 1.005. The stretches that actually carry the Roman names, junction to junction, are straighter still. On the A38, the 2.41 km of Rykneld Street between Fradley South and Alrewas scores 1.0002, and at 10 metres Douglas-Peucker keeps just 3 of its 34 points. Three A5 stretches named Watling Street between Great Wyrley and Brownhills West score 1.0001, 1.0006 and 1.0080, and the unnumbered Watling Street at Hints scores 1.0083. Then comes the twist: the street Ordnance Survey names Ryknild Street in Boley Park runs 1.078 km to cover 0.917 km, a sinuosity of 1.175, the most winding line we measured with a Roman name. A name alone does not tell you where a road runs. OS Open Rivers draws watercourses with far fewer points than Open Roads draws roads: at a 1 metre tolerance, Douglas-Peucker keeps 189 of the 190 points on the River Tame in our box, because there was little left to remove. So the rivers are compared only by sinuosity: Curborough Brook runs 5.50 km to cover 4.85 km, a sinuosity of 1.134, and the River Tame 24.04 km to cover 16.69 km, 1.440. Every result on this page is also within 10 metres of Ordnance Survey's line, which is itself a simplified picture of the real road. ### Younger learners Drawing a route on squared paper, then rubbing out every dot that barely changes its shape and counting how many are left. ### Teenagers Recursion, chaining and Douglas-Peucker in Python on real Ordnance Survey data, with equal windows for a fair test. ### Adults Simplifying GPS tracks and sensor traces for storage and display, with a stated tolerance and a check on what was lost. We have no connection with Ordnance Survey, the Victoria County History, Lichfield Cathedral, Historic England or Lichfield District Council. Why should a Lichfield teenager learn to simplify a line? Because every simplification throws something away, and someone has to decide how much can go before the result misleads. Douglas-Peucker is a small, honest example of what AI systems do on a grand scale: keep what matters, drop the rest. Its tolerance is written down, so anyone can see exactly how far the simplified line may stray. A learner who has set that tolerance by hand knows to ask what any summary, human or machine, was allowed to leave out. The Boley Park street is the other lesson. A system that trusts labels would file it with the Roman roads because of its name; the measurement says otherwise. Learning to test a label against the data is exactly the habit that keeps people in charge of the tools they use. So a Lichfield teenager should keep learning to code in 2026, in a city whose roads still carry names from Roman Britain: AI can shorten the story, but a person has to check the shape is still true. Online, the Close and a village at the edge of the district are the same distance from the lesson. ### Town, Close and villages A learner in Sandfields and another in Fradley can join the same class without a drive along the A38. ### English school stages Our levels follow English school years and key stages, and we use GCSE and A level course names; lessons are always in English. ### What the free lesson does The first session works through a real task and ends with our view of level, course and a regular weekly time.
