Thirteen centuries on one site ## A cathedral with the world's earliest known fan vaulting From Gloucester Cathedral's own heritage pages. ### 678 to 679 AD The Cathedral describes its site as one of continuous Christian worship since then, more than 1,300 years, with architecture spanning almost a thousand. ### The Great Cloister Built in the late fourteenth century, it contains what the Cathedral calls the earliest known example of fan vaulting anywhere in the world. ### A king's tomb The Cathedral counts the tomb of a king among the things visitors come to discover, one of many layers of history in the building. We have no connection with Gloucester Cathedral. Fan vaulting opens this page because it is pattern made precise: the same curved shape repeated and fitted together until the whole ceiling reads as one design. The project below is about fitting patterns too, deciding when the rise of the river at Sharpness and the rise at Gloucester are really the same event seen twice. Where the river readings come from The Environment Agency's flood-monitoring service publishes recent river levels for its gauges, every five minutes at Sharpness and every fifteen at Epney, Minsterworth and Gloucester, as heights on each gauge's own scale. Put records on one clock The gauges report at different intervals and occasionally miss a slot. Every reading goes onto one 15-minute grid first, so like is compared with like. ### 2. Try one delay Slide the Gloucester record back in time and measure the gap. The closest single delay, 150 minutes, still leaves a mean gap of 0.849 standard deviations. ### 3. Let the delay vary Dynamic time warping builds a table of partial matches and finds the cheapest path through it, allowing the delay to change from tide to tide within a four-hour band. ### A flexible match will find something Warping cut the gap to 0.547, which looks like a clear win. But in four weeks, 38 of the 54 tides lifted Gloucester by less than 30 centimetres, and during those neap tides the warping path still bent itself to pair Sharpness with whatever the river was doing upstream. Dynamic time warping always returns a match. Whether the matched pieces are the same event is a question the learner has to answer separately. For the tides that clearly arrived, the story is consistent. The largest, 9.69 metres on the Sharpness gauge at 20:45 GMT on 12 September, lifted Gloucester by 1.65 metres about two hours later. Across all 54 tides, the height at Sharpness and the rise at Gloucester correlate at 0.79, but the dividing line is fuzzy: a 7.57-metre tide got through while a 7.76-metre one did not, so the height at Sharpness is clearly not the only thing that matters on the day. Each gauge reports height above its own reference level, so 9.69 at Sharpness and 1.89 at Gloucester cannot be compared directly. That is why the project standardises each record before aligning them, and talks about rises rather than raw heights when it asks whether a tide arrived. ### Younger learners Two people clapping a rhythm at slightly different speeds, and working out which claps belong together. ### Teenagers Four gauge records in Python, a shared time grid, a fixed-lag comparison and dynamic time warping written from scratch. ### Adults Comparing time series at work, from machine sensors to sales, with the alignment rules and baselines stated. Why should a Gloucester teenager learn how alignment works? Because an algorithm that always finds a match needs a person who asks whether it is real. Hand an assistant two river records and ask how well they line up, and it may run dynamic time warping and report a close match. It will not point out that most of the tides never reached Gloucester. A learner who has watched the warping path bend around neap tides knows to check that the event exists in both records before celebrating the fit. Sequence alignment runs through AI: recognising speech, reading handwriting, comparing movements and matching patterns in sensor streams. The same caution applies everywhere. Flexible matching is powerful precisely because it can fit almost anything, which is why the people who build these systems test whether the matches mean what they seem to. So a Gloucester teenager should still learn to program in 2026, in a city whose cloister first made fan vaulting fit together: the algorithm finds a fit, but deciding whether the fit is true is still up to us.
