The statistics bureau adds small random adjustments to protect privacy, so the parts of a QuickStats table may not add up to its total. Transport for NSW publishes monthly Opal entries and exits for every metro, train and light rail station. For Macquarie University Station it falls every single month, a pattern too steady to be noise. ### What the gap does not tell us The figures show where taps happen, not why. A steady deficit at one station is consistent with people arriving by metro and leaving another way, but the published table cannot say which way, and we do not guess at a cause. Opal counts cover tapped trips only. Trips on other tickets, or by people who did not tap, are not in the table, so the balance check is a check on the recorded data, not on every person who used the stations. How learners build it ## From two columns to a conservation check The project uses only lists, a loop and one running total, which is why we teach it early. | Step | What the code does | What it teaches | | --- | --- | --- | | Read | Keep the rows for one station and one direction | Filtering a published file without changing it | | Pair | Match each month's entries with the same month's exits | Joining two columns on a shared key | | Difference | Entries minus exits for every month | Signed numbers and what the sign means | | Accumulate | Add each difference to a running total | State carried through a loop | | Check | Compare the final total with the sum of the columns | Testing a result two independent ways | The last step is the habit we care about. The running total after 23 months must equal total entries minus total exits; if the two disagree, the code has a bug, and learners find it before trusting any chart. ### Primary learners Count taps in and taps out for a pretend school bus in Scratch, and spot when the bus ends the day with someone still on it. ### Secondary students Write the Python version on the real station file, plot the cumulative flow and explain the shape in plain words. ### University and adult Reconcile two stations, then a whole line, and write a short note on what the data supports and what it leaves open. Why should a Macquarie Park learner check it? Because a total is only useful if you know what it should equal, and only a person who understands the data can say that.
