The short answer

AP Computer Science A is College Board's Java programming course. The exam is three hours and taken digitally: 42 multiple-choice questions worth 55 per cent and four free-response questions worth 45 per cent. The four free-response items are Methods and Control Structures, Class Design, Data Analysis with ArrayList and 2D Arrays. The four units are weighted Using Objects and Methods 15 to 25 per cent, Selection and Iteration 25 to 35 per cent, Class Creation 10 to 18 per cent and Data Collections 30 to 40 per cent, which makes collections close to half the paper once the two written questions are counted. Modern Age Coders teaches it live online, one to one or in batches of five to eight, from USD 100 a month, with the first class free.

The number that decides the grade

## Data collections is close to half of AP Computer Science A

This is the single most useful thing a parent can know before planning the year, and it is published by College Board rather than inferred by us.

Unit 4, Data Collections, carries thirty to forty per cent of the multiple-choice section on its own. Then look at the four free-response questions: the third is Data Analysis with ArrayList and the fourth is 2D Arrays. Two of the four written questions, worth forty-five per cent of the paper between them, are collections questions.

Put those together and a student who is fluent in Java syntax but uncomfortable with arrays, ArrayList and two-dimensional traversal is capped well below a 5 no matter how much syntax revision they do. The arithmetic simply does not allow it.

This matters because of how the subject is usually taught. Most courses spend the first two-thirds of the year on syntax, control flow and object-oriented ideas, which feels like progress and is genuinely necessary, and then arrive at collections in the spring with six weeks left. The heaviest-weighted material gets the least time.

We invert that. Collections start early, come back repeatedly, and every later topic is taught with a collection in the example rather than with a single variable. By the time a student meets the real 2D array question they have written dozens, which is the only thing that makes that question routine rather than frightening.

The exam, exactly

## AP Computer Science A exam format and unit weightings

Both tables below come from College Board's own published course and exam material. Where a figure is a range, that is because College Board publishes it as a range.

### The four units and what each is worth

Two things follow from the second table that are worth saying plainly. Selection and Iteration plus Data Collections account for somewhere between fifty-five and seventy-five per cent of the multiple choice between them, which means loops over collections are the centre of gravity of the whole qualification. And Class Creation, at ten to eighteen per cent, is the smallest unit by weight despite being the part most students find conceptually hardest, so it deserves careful teaching and not a disproportionate share of the year.

Where marks are lost

## Six things that cost AP Computer Science A students real points

None of these is about not knowing Java. All six are about how the exam is written and how it is marked.

### Writing code that works but does not follow the specification

Free-response marking rewards doing what was asked, in the class and method signatures given. An elegant solution that renames a method or changes a return type loses marks a clumsy compliant one keeps.

### Ignoring the Java Quick Reference

The reference is provided and it lists the exact methods available. Students who have never opened it during practice waste minutes hunting for it under time, or invent a method that does not exist on the list.

### Treating the 2D array question as a special case

It is a nested loop over a rectangular structure and nothing more. Students who have only ever written one-dimensional loops meet it as a new topic in May rather than as an old topic in a new shape.

### Losing the boundary on every traversal

Off-by-one at the first and last index is the single most common written-answer error in this subject. It is not a knowledge gap, it is a habit gap, and the fix is deliberate practice at stating the range before writing the loop.

### Guessing on tracing questions instead of writing the state down

A large share of the multiple-choice section asks what a fragment produces. Students who trace in their head are slower and less accurate than students trained to write two columns of variable values.

### Never having typed code under time without a compiler nearby

The written section is typed, and it is not the environment most students learned in. Practising in the format, against the clock, is a distinct skill from knowing the material, and the last phase of the course is spent on exactly that.

The year, phase by phase

## How we sequence AP Computer Science A across an academic year

Two live classes a week, one to one or in a batch of five to eight, with past-paper work between them that the teacher marks.

1. #### Weeks 1 to 6: objects, methods and the habit of reading a signature

  Unit 1. Java syntax arrives alongside the discipline of reading a method signature and knowing exactly what it promises before writing anything. Arrays are introduced informally in week 4, deliberately earlier than most schemes of work, so that the heaviest unit has the longest runway.
2. #### Weeks 5 to 12: selection, iteration and tracing under time

  Unit 2, the second-heaviest unit. Nested loops from the start, and the two-column tracing method drilled until it is automatic, because a quarter to a third of the multiple choice turns on predicting what a fragment does.
3. #### Weeks 13 to 19: class creation, and writing to a specification

  Unit 3. Every exercise is given as a specification with fixed signatures, which is how the free-response section presents it, so that following a specification is normal rather than a constraint discovered in the exam hall.
4. #### Weeks 13 to 26, running alongside: collections in depth

  Unit 4, and it never stops. Arrays, ArrayList, two-dimensional traversal, the standard algorithms over them, and tracing recursive calls. Every worked example from week 13 onwards uses a collection rather than a single variable, so the heaviest-weighted material is the most rehearsed.
5. #### Weeks 27 to 32: full papers, marked to the published rubric

  Timed sections in the real format. The teacher marks to the rubric rather than to intent, which is uncomfortable the first two times and is the fastest route to understanding how points are actually awarded.
6. #### Final weeks: the four question types, one at a time

  Methods and control structures, class design, ArrayList analysis, 2D arrays. Each drilled separately until the student recognises which of the four they are looking at within seconds of reading the stem.

Choosing between them

## AP Computer Science A or AP Computer Science Principles?

These are different qualifications with different purposes, and the wrong choice costs a year.

The short version: AP Computer Science A is a programming course in Java and behaves like a first university programming module. AP Computer Science Principles is broader and lighter on code, covering how computing systems and data work, and is language-agnostic. A student aiming at a computer science degree normally wants CSA, and many take [CSP](/ap-computer-science-principles-online-coaching) first as an on-ramp. Taking both is common and sensible, in that order.

Being straight about it

## What we will not tell you about AP Computer Science A

**We do not guarantee a score.** Nobody can. What a teacher controls is coverage, diagnosis, marked practice and the number of past questions a student has worked under time. What we will do is tell you honestly, after a few weeks, what score band the current trajectory points at, which is more useful than a promise.

**We do not know your university's credit policy.** Recognition of an AP score varies by institution and by department, and it changes. Check the specific university's published policy rather than any tutor's summary of it, including ours.

**We do not think a late start is hopeless, and we do not think it is equivalent.** A student starting in January with the exam in May can absolutely improve, and one to one is the right format for that, because the syllabus gets rebuilt around whichever papers they are weakest on. A student starting in September has a materially better year.

**We will say when a student is not ready.** AP Computer Science A assumes a student can already reason about a problem in steps. If they cannot yet, the honest advice is a term of [foundations](/how-to-think-like-a-programmer) first, and we would rather say that on the free class than take a year of fees.

## What a student can do by the end of the course

These are things a teacher can watch a student do on a given Tuesday. We list them instead of a predicted grade because one of the two is checkable.

### Write a class from a written specification without changing it

Given fixed signatures and a described behaviour, produce a compiling class that does exactly what was asked, which is what the class design question rewards.

### Traverse a 2D array in either direction from a blank file

Row-major and column-major, with the boundary stated before the loop is written, quickly enough to leave time to check it.

### Use ArrayList correctly while modifying it

Including the removal-during-traversal case that silently skips elements, which is the single most common way marks are lost on the data analysis question.

### Trace a fragment on paper and predict its output

Using a written two-column state table rather than mental arithmetic, which is both faster and considerably more accurate under time.

### Read the Java Quick Reference fluently

Knowing what is on it, what is not, and where, so that no exam minute is spent searching and no method is invented.

### Recognise the four written question types on sight

Methods and control structures, class design, ArrayList analysis, 2D arrays, identified within seconds of reading the stem so the approach starts immediately.

### Sit a full paper in the real digital format under time

Repeatedly, before May, so that the environment is familiar and the only new thing on the day is the questions.

### Say why an answer earns each point

Marking their own work against the published rubric, which is the habit that turns a student from a passive candidate into one who knows where they stand.

## What parents and students ask about AP CSA

### How is the AP Computer Science A exam structured?

Three hours, taken digitally. Section 1 is 42 multiple-choice questions worth 55 per cent of the score, and Section 2 is four free-response questions worth 45 per cent, answered by typing Java code. The four written questions are Methods and Control Structures, Class Design, Data Analysis with ArrayList, and 2D Arrays. A Java Quick Reference is provided throughout.

### Which units carry the most marks?

Data Collections is the heaviest at thirty to forty per cent of the multiple choice, followed by Selection and Iteration at twenty-five to thirty-five. Using Objects and Methods is fifteen to twenty-five, and Class Creation is ten to eighteen. Because two of the four written questions are also collections questions, collections end up close to half the paper overall.

### How much do the classes cost?

A group batch of five to eight students is USD 100 a month and one to one is USD 150 a month, billed in US dollars. These are the same figures everywhere we teach outside India. There is no enrolment fee and no minimum term, and the first class is free without a card.

### Are the classes live, or recorded?

Every class is live, one to one or in a batch of five to eight students, taught from India to students worldwide. We do not sell recordings in place of classes. A live teacher is the only thing that can watch a student trace a loop wrongly and interrupt while the misconception is forming.

### Does my child need to know Java before starting?

No, and most do not. The course starts from Java syntax in module one. What it does assume is that a student can reason about a problem in steps, and if that is not there yet we will say so on the free class and suggest a term of foundations first rather than take a year of fees.

### What grade level is AP Computer Science A for?

Typically Grade 11 or 12, though capable Grade 10 students take it successfully and we teach several every year. The constraint is rarely age; it is whether the student has enough time in the week for two classes plus the practice between them.

### We are starting late. Is it worth it?

Yes, with a caveat we would rather state than hide. A student starting in January with a May exam can improve substantially, and one to one is the right format because the syllabus gets rebuilt around whichever papers they are weakest on. A student starting in September has a materially better year, and we will not pretend the two are equivalent.

### Do you guarantee a 5?

No. Nobody can guarantee an exam score and any provider offering one is selling you something they cannot deliver. What a teacher controls is coverage, diagnosis, marked practice and the number of past questions worked under time. What we will do is tell you honestly after a few weeks what band the current trajectory points at.

### Will the AP score give my child university credit?

That depends entirely on the university and often on the department, and policies change. Check the specific institution's published policy rather than any tutor's summary of it, including ours. What the score reliably does is demonstrate that a student has completed a course at a recognised standard.

### Should we take AP CSA or AP CSP?

CSA is a Java programming course and behaves like a first university programming module. CSP is broader, lighter on code, and language-agnostic. A student aiming at a computer science degree normally wants CSA. Many take CSP first as an on-ramp, and taking both in that order is common and sensible.

### How much homework is there?

Past-paper work between classes, and the teacher marks it. Realistically that is two to four hours a week during term and more in the final phase. Work that is not marked is not worth setting, which is why we cap batch size at eight.

### What happens in the free first class?

A short diagnostic on the exam itself rather than a sales call. Usually a tracing question and a small collections task, because how a student handles those two predicts the year better than anything they can tell us about themselves. You get a straight assessment afterwards, including if the answer is to wait.

### Can my child join mid-year?

One to one, yes, and that is usually the right format for a mid-year start. Group batches run to a schedule and a student joining in February into a batch that began in September will be behind in a way the batch cannot slow down for. We will tell you which applies.

### Which timezone are classes in?

We teach from India to students worldwide, and slots are arranged around the student. In practice that works well for most of Asia, the Gulf, Europe and the Americas, and there are hours in some timezones we decline rather than teach badly. Ask on the first call and we will tell you plainly what is available for yours.

### What happens after we send the form?

A mentor calls you to arrange the free class. Nothing is charged and no card is requested. Tell us the exam date on that call, because it determines whether a group batch or one to one is the honest recommendation, and those are different answers in September and in February.
