The oldest working algorithm in the country

## Nizwa has been running a scheduling system for about fifteen hundred years

This is the best answer we know to a question parents ask constantly, which is whether computational thinking is a foreign import. In Oman's interior it demonstrably is not.

The aflaj are Oman's traditional irrigation channels, and five of them are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as representative of some three thousand still in use across the country. Their origins may date to around AD 500, and archaeological evidence points to irrigation in this arid landscape as early as 2500 BC.

A falaj carries a finite flow of water past a series of farms. Every farm needs some. There is not enough for everyone at once. So the water is not divided by volume, which would be almost impossible to measure in a channel, but **by time**: each shareholder is entitled to the whole flow for an agreed interval, and the intervals are named units that convert into one another exactly.

Read that description again as a programmer would. A single shared resource. Contending claimants. Fixed-length slices allocated in rotation, with the claim tradeable between holders and the schedule administered by an accountable person. That is time-division multiplexing with a market attached, and it was working in Ad Dakhiliyah for a millennium before anybody wrote it down as computer science.

The timekeeping is the part that stops students in their tracks. Before wristwatches, the daytime share was measured with a sundial: a pole called a **lamad** set on flat ground and marked with lines, its shadow tracked from sunrise until midday and on eastward. After that, allocation ran **by the stars**. Oman is possibly unique in having timed water rights astronomically, and in Nizwa that is local history rather than a curiosity from somewhere else.

Notice the arithmetic in that table, because a student should be made to check it rather than told it. Twenty-four athar of half an hour each is exactly twelve hours, which is one baddah. Six athar make one rubu'a, and four rubu'a make one baddah. It is a consistent, closed system of units with exact conversions and no remainder, which is precisely what a well-designed data type looks like, and it was designed by farmers.

Verified 18 August 2026. Practice varies between individual aflaj; a family in Nizwa will know their own better than we do.

What that teaches, and what a student builds from it

## How to think about a problem before reaching for a language

The falaj is not a gimmick we bolt onto the syllabus. It is the clearest local example of the thing this whole track is trying to install, which is the habit of describing a problem precisely before writing a line of anything.

1. #### State the problem in one sentence with no verbs about computers

  One channel, many farms, not enough water at once, and every share has to be defensible to a neighbour. A student who can write that sentence has already done the hardest part. Most beginners cannot, because they reach for a language before they can say what the language is meant to accomplish.
2. #### Name the units and prove they are consistent

  Half an hour, three hours, twelve hours, with twenty-four of the smallest making the largest. The learner checks the conversions themselves and discovers that the system closes with no remainder. That is the moment they meet the idea that a good representation makes bad states impossible to express.
3. #### Write it as a program and immediately break it

  A rotation over shareholders in Python. Then the awkward questions: what happens when somebody sells half a share, when the flow drops, when a farm is added, when two people claim the same slot? Every one of those is a real thing that has happened to a real falaj, and every one is a bug class that turns up in modern scheduling code.
4. #### Turn the schedule into data, then into a model

  With a few seasons of simulated flow, can a student predict whether a shareholder will get their full allocation? That is a forecasting problem with a baseline, and it moves the learner off rules and onto measured prediction, which is the third rung of the ladder.
5. #### Publish it so somebody can check the reasoning

  The code, a short write-up, and an explicit note of what the model assumes and where it fails. A project that says what it cannot do reads as engineering. One that does not reads as a demonstration.

### The part that is happening now, in your city

This is not purely historical. The University of Nizwa holds a UNESCO Chair for Aflaj Studies, and has worked with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources on an electronic management system for Oman's aflaj. In other words, the thousand-year-old scheduling algorithm is being turned into software, by an institution in Nizwa, in the student's own lifetime.

We have no connection to that work and claim none. We point at it because a teenager who is told that programming is something that happens elsewhere has only to look up the road.

### Then the rest of the ladder

After the thinking comes the doing, in a fixed order: Python written by hand, then data, then models with a measured error, then agents that act, then GitHub. How a term runs from the interior

## A thirty minute difference that never needs renegotiating

Both countries hold a single clock all year, so an evening agreed in Nizwa stays correct through every season. Distance to the capital changes nothing about the lesson.

16:30 to 18:00

Nizwa time. Primary age children, straight after school.

18:30 to 20:00

Nizwa time. The main teenage block, after dinner and school work.

20:30 to 22:00

Nizwa time. University students and working adults on weeknights.

### The first hour

Free, and its only job is to work out where the learner actually is. One problem, watched rather than marked.

### Batches of five to eight

Assembled on demonstrated ability from twenty-five countries, so the interior is not a smaller pool than anywhere else.

### Or private teaching

Better for a narrow adult objective, a certificate year with no slack, or a week that no fixed slot survives.

### Ninety minutes, twice weekly

Both screens visible, so the teacher interrupts a wrong idea while it is forming rather than marking it later.

### Thirty minutes, permanently

Neither country observes summer time, so a slot agreed once holds for as long as the student stays.

## What families in Nizwa ask first

### Is the falaj material actually taught, or is it just framing on a web page?

It is taught, in the first weeks, and then it is dropped once it has done its job. The purpose is to give a student a problem they already understand socially, so that the unfamiliar part is only the formalising. After that the course moves to Python, data and models like any other. We would rather be honest that it is a teaching device than pretend the whole syllabus is built on irrigation.

### Do you have any connection to the University of Nizwa or its UNESCO Chair?

None whatsoever, and we should say so clearly since we mention their work. The University of Nizwa holds a UNESCO Chair for Aflaj Studies and has been involved in digitising aflaj management with the relevant ministry. We reference that because it shows a local student that this kind of work happens in their own city. It is not a partnership, an endorsement or a route to anything.

### Do you have a centre in Nizwa?

No, and none anywhere in Oman. Every lesson is a live video call taught from India and the telephone number here rings in India rather than locally. At your end you need a computer with a keyboard, a connection that will carry ninety minutes of video, audio the teacher can hear, and a reasonably current browser.

### How much does it cost?

A group batch of five to eight students is USD 100 a month and one to one teaching is USD 150 a month, billed in US dollars, the same flat figures everywhere outside India. There is no enrolment fee, no annual contract, and the first class is free without a card.

### My child is nine. Is any of this suitable?

The thinking is, the machine learning is not yet. At nine the work is sequence, prediction, and being able to say out loud what a program will do before running it, with typing kept light. The falaj discussion works remarkably well at that age precisely because it is about fairness and turns, which nine year olds have strong opinions about. Python by hand usually starts somewhere between nine and twelve depending on the child.

### What time are the classes, and do they shift?

They do not shift. Oman stays on Gulf Standard Time and India on Indian Standard Time for the entire year, which fixes the difference at thirty minutes permanently: seven in the evening in Nizwa is half past six for the teacher. A recurring slot settled in one term is still correct in the next, which is not true of providers in Europe or North America.

### Being away from the capital, will my child be in a weaker group?

No, because the group is not local. Between five and eight learners are assembled on what each can currently demonstrate, out of an intake spanning twenty-five countries. A strong student in Nizwa is grouped with strong students wherever they happen to live, which is precisely the thing a small local pool cannot offer.

### Does this replace school?

It sits beside it and awards nothing of its own beyond a completion certificate. What it adds is consecutive weeks on a single build with someone who can look at code that fails and explain why, which a school timetable struggles to give to any one subject. When the sensible advice is fewer lessons during an examination term, we say so.

### Are adults taught here too?

Yes, six to sixty-seven, and adults in the interior usually come with something specific they want to stop doing by hand. That kind of goal suits one to one, because the syllabus can bend entirely around the task, and it typically finishes within a few months rather than running indefinitely.

### What happens after we send the form?

A mentor rings you at an Omani hour to arrange the free session. No card is asked for and nothing is charged. Being plain about it: the form opens a conversation rather than an enrolment and holds no seat in any batch. Course, format and evening are all settled in that conversation before money comes up.

If your child is young, expect that first hour to look more like an argument about fairness and turns than like programming, which is deliberate.
