> AI and Python for Australian girls aged 9 to 18: real projects, visible role models and lessons around school, anywhere in Australia. Live online, first class free.

In short

An AI and Python academy for girls helps girls aged 9 to 18 get into coding and artificial intelligence through open access, visible role models and real projects. It does not assume girls learn differently, and the syllabus is the same as every course. Modern Age Coders teaches it live online across Australia, in mixed small groups or one to one, and the first class is free.

## What gets in the way, and what we change

The barriers are practical. So are the answers.

| Obstacle | What we do |
| --- | --- |
| No coding class within reach, especially outside the capital cities | Live online lessons, the same in Broome as in Brisbane |
| Being the only beginner in a room of experienced coders | Groups formed by level, so everyone starts together |
| Projects that feel pointless | Projects chosen by the student, from games to tools to AI |
| Not knowing anyone who does this work | Published projects by other students to study, and links to community events |
| Busy weeks of sport and homework | Fixed times agreed around school, or one-to-one lessons |

### What does not change

The syllabus, the standard and the expectations are identical to every other course. Girls do the same Python, the same maths and the same AI as anyone else.

Classes are our normal small groups, matched by level, or one to one. This academy does not use separate girls-only batches.

### Why AI needs more people building it

The Australian Curriculum makes the point itself: "training a model on data collected from a single demographic group may not produce correct outputs for a more diverse population".

AI is better when the people building and checking it bring different experiences. That starts with more students learning how it works.

A first AI project

## A rock, paper, scissors AI that learns

One of the first AI projects in the academy. It fits in a few dozen lines of Python and teaches the core idea behind machine learning: an AI can only learn patterns that are really there.

The program keeps a table of what its opponent played after each of their previous moves. Each round it predicts the most likely next move and plays whatever beats it. We tested it against four kinds of player, **20 games of 1,000 rounds** each, with fixed random seeds so the results can be repeated.

| Opponent | AI wins | AI loses | Draws |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Plays completely at random | 33.6% | 33.0% | 33.3% |
| Repeats their own last move 70% of the time | 79.9% | 10.1% | 10.0% |
| Cycles rock, paper, scissors in order | 99.7% | 0.1% | 0.1% |
| Picks rock half the time | 49.5% | 25.0% | 25.6% |

### Patterns are everything

Against a player in a rut, the AI wins four rounds in five. Against a fixed cycle it almost never loses. The more predictable the data, the better the model.

### Randomness wins

Against a truly random player the AI does no better than chance: 33.6% wins against 33.0% losses. The simplest strategy of all, playing at random, cannot be beaten.

### What students try next

Remembering two moves instead of one, forgetting old games, and playing against each other's programs. Each change is measured the same way.

### Why this is a real AI lesson

The table of counts is a tiny model trained on data, the opponent's moves. Its predictions are only as good as the patterns in that data, the same reason a large AI system can be confidently wrong.

Students see that directly, in numbers they produced themselves.

### Where it goes next

The same students later train classifiers on real datasets in [AI classes for teens](/ai-classes-for-teens-australia), and learn why the training data matters as much as the code.

Younger students build the game first in Python and add the learning part once loops and lists feel easy.

The program, seeds and results are our own. Curriculum quote from ACARA, [Digital Technologies curriculum content, Years 7 to 10](https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/content/dam/en/curriculum/ac-version-9/downloads/technologies/digital-technologies/technologies-digital-technologies-curriculum-content-7-10-v9.docx), read 14 October 2026.

Role models

## Seeing people who already do this

It is easier to picture yourself writing code when you have watched someone do it and talk about it.

### In our lessons

Students present their work to the group, explain where they got stuck and how they got unstuck, and give each other feedback.

Published work by our students appears on this page and in the [student labs](/student-labs), so new students can see what is possible after a year.

### In the community

The Girls' Programming Network says: "Each school term around Australia we run free, full-day programming workshops hosted by local technologists and teachers."

Our [guide to the next step after a GPN workshop](/girls-programming-network-next-step-australia) explains how those events and regular lessons fit together.

Projects

## Real projects at every age

Every stage ends with something that works and can be shown to family and friends.

| Age | Project | Skill |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 9 to 12 | Turtle art and a number-guessing game | Loops, variables and decisions |
| 9 to 12 | Rock, paper, scissors that learns | Lists, counting and first prediction |
| 13 to 15 | A quiz that adapts to wrong answers | Functions, data and simple models |
| 13 to 18 | An image or text classifier | Training, testing and checking for bias |
| 15 to 18 | A small web app with an AI feature | Putting a model in front of real users |

Students interested in building websites can add [web development for teens](/web-development-course-for-teens-australia); those who enjoy puzzles often enjoy [competitive programming](/competitive-programming-australia).

Choosing projects

## Turning an interest into a first project

Students learn faster when the project is about something they already care about. The first lessons help each student pick one.

| If she likes | A first Python project | An AI step later |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Music | A playlist shuffler that avoids repeats | A model that guesses a song's genre from simple features |
| Animals | A quiz about native wildlife | An image classifier for a few species |
| Sport | A score tracker for her team | Predicting results and checking how often it is right |
| Art | Turtle drawings built from code | Generating patterns and comparing them |
| Games | Rock, paper, scissors | The learning opponent from this page |

### Why choice matters

A project she chose gets finished. Finishing things, and showing them to someone, builds confidence faster than any amount of exercises.

The syllabus skills are the same whichever project carries them.

### Sharing the work

Finished projects are shown to the group, and older students can publish theirs online with a parent's agreement.

Some go on to student hackathons or programming competitions; others simply keep building.

For families

## Supporting a daughter who is starting to code

Families do not need to know how to code to help. A few small things make a difference.

| What families do | Why it helps |
| --- | --- |
| Ask to see the latest project | Explaining it out loud deepens understanding |
| Treat bugs as normal | Every programmer spends time stuck; it is part of the work |
| Keep a regular lesson slot | Steady practice matters more than long sessions |
| Look for local events together | Meeting others who code makes it feel ordinary |

### Encouragement without pressure

Curiosity grows when coding feels like making things, not like another test. Praise for finishing and for sticking with a hard bug goes a long way.

There is no need to push for competitions unless she wants them.

### When interest dips

Interest rises and falls with school terms and other activities. A change of project can bring it back faster than a change of course.

Teachers can suggest a new project that fits what she enjoys now.

Progress

## Four stages from first program to AI builder

Each stage ends with a working project; the next begins when that project is done.

| Stage | What you can do |
| --- | --- |
| 1. Starter | Write short Python programs with loops and decisions |
| 2. Maker | Build complete games and tools you designed yourself |
| 3. Modeller | Train a small AI model and measure how well it works |
| 4. Builder | Put an AI feature into an app other people use |

### Are the classes girls only?

No. In this academy students learn in our normal mixed small groups, matched by level, or one to one. It is about access and encouragement, not separate classes.

Families who prefer one-to-one lessons can choose them at any stage.

### Is the content different for girls?

No. The syllabus, projects and standard are exactly the same as for every student.

What we add is a deliberate effort to show real people and real work, and a choice of projects.

## Questions about the AI and Python academy for girls

### What is the AI and Python academy for girls?

A way into AI and Python for Australian girls aged 9 to 18, built on open access, role models and real projects. The syllabus is the same as every course.

### Are classes girls only?

Not in this academy. Students learn in our normal mixed small groups matched by level, or one to one if they prefer.

### Do you teach girls differently?

No. We do not assume girls learn differently. The content and standard are identical; what we focus on is removing practical barriers and showing real work.

### What is a good first AI project?

A rock, paper, scissors player that learns its opponent's habits. In our tests it won 99.7% against a predictable player and only 33.6% against a random one, which shows that AI depends on patterns in its data.

### What age can start?

From 9 with Python and AI for kids, or from 6 with Scratch. Teenagers can start Python from zero at any point.

### Does my daughter need experience?

No. Every starting course begins from zero, and groups are matched by level.

### Where can she meet other girls who code?

The Girls' Programming Network runs free full-day workshops around Australia each term. Our GPN next-step guide explains how they fit with regular lessons.

### Which AI tools will she use?

Only tools whose own terms allow her age. Building AI in Python, the core of the academy, needs no AI account at all.

### Will this help her career?

We make no career or salary promises. The academy builds real skills and a portfolio of projects she can show.

### What are the fees?

A first class at no charge, with no card. Ongoing monthly fees for groups and one-to-one lessons are in the fees panel.
