## Young families and apartment living

Census 2021 QuickStats for the Bankstown suburb, set against New South Wales and Australia.

| Headline | Bankstown |
| --- | --- |
| Residents | 34,933 |
| Families | 8,573 |
| Private dwellings | 13,033 |
| People per household | 2.9 |

| Measure | Bankstown | NSW | Australia |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Children aged 0 to 4 | 7.9% (2,763) | 5.8% | 5.8% |
| Flats or apartments among occupied homes | 58.5% (6,419) | 21.7% | 14.2% |
| Drove a car to work on Census day | 41.1% (4,710) | 43.1% | 52.7% |
| Bachelor degree or higher, aged 15 and over | 24.0% (6,681) | 27.8% | 26.3% |

### Small children

Children under five made up 7.9% of residents, two points above the share across the state.

### Apartments

More than half of occupied homes, 6,419 of them, were flats or apartments.

### Census timing

The figures come from August 2021, when lockdowns changed how many people travelled to work that day.

The bureau randomises cells slightly for privacy, so rows may not add to totals. We cite its own totals and never build one by adding parts.

Signature project

## Test 338 stations and some will lie to you

For every station with a count in all 23 months of Transport for NSW's data, we compared October 2024 to August 2025 with October 2025 to August 2026, month by month, using a paired t-test on the logarithm of entries.

| Method | Threshold | Stations flagged |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No correction | p below 0.05 | 234 |
| Benjamini-Hochberg | False discovery rate 5% | 220 |
| Bonferroni | p below 0.05 divided by 338 | 55 |

| Measure | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Average stations below 0.05 with no real pattern | 16.5 |
| Fewest in one shuffle | 4 |
| Most in one shuffle | 28 |
| Expected by chance, 5% of 338 | 16.9 |

### The uncorrected count

With 338 tests at the five per cent level, around 17 stations would be flagged even if nothing had changed anywhere. The shuffle check confirms it.

### Bonferroni

Divide the threshold by the number of tests. It almost never raises a false alarm, but it threw away more than three quarters of the real changes here.

### Benjamini-Hochberg

Rank the p-values and allow a controlled share of false alarms. It kept 220 stations, of which 217 had more entries in the second year and 3 fewer.

### Why Bankstown itself did not pass

Bankstown Station's p-value was 0.0596, just above even the loosest line. Its first year contains two months far below the rest, 372 entries in May 2025 and 3,618 in June 2025, against 43,003 to 102,830 in its other first-year months. Two extreme values swell the variability so much that a real-looking rise cannot be told apart from noise. The data does not say why those months were low, and we do not guess.

All tests, corrections and shuffle checks are our own calculations from Transport for NSW's published monthly entry counts, which count gate entries rather than individual people.

Why this matters in AI

## The same trap inside every model comparison

False discoveries are not only a statistics problem. They appear wherever AI work tries many options and keeps the winner.

| Situation | How many tests | What goes wrong |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Choosing among many model settings | Hundreds of runs | The winner may just be lucky |
| Searching data for patterns | Every column against every other | Spurious correlations appear |
| A/B testing many page versions | One test per version | False winners get shipped |
| Scanning sensors for faults | One test per sensor | Alarms that mean nothing |

Learners write the paired test themselves before calling a library, so they know what a p-value measures. Then they implement both corrections in a few lines of Python and rerun the 338 stations, watching the count fall from 234 to 220 to 55.

### Younger learners

Flip coins in groups and see how often some group gets a run of heads by luck.

### High school

Code the t-test and both corrections, then run the shuffle check that reveals chance results.

### Adults

Apply corrections to real experiment results at work before announcing a winner.

Transport for NSW, Canterbury-Bankstown Council, the NSW Department of Education and the statistics bureau publish the open data used here and have no link with Modern Age Coders.

## AI can run a thousand tests. Why should a Bankstown student understand the statistics?

Because the more tests a computer runs, the more confident nonsense it can produce, and only someone who understands the maths will notice.

Ask an AI tool to find which stations changed and it may happily report 234, every one presented with a convincing p-value. About 17 of those would appear even if nothing had happened at all. The tool will not warn you unless you ask the right question.

A learner who has run the shuffle check and the corrections knows that question. They ask how many tests were run, what correction was applied, and whether the result survives when the data is scrambled, which is how careful data scientists work.

In 2026 the Bankstown learners who understand the statistics behind AI will be the ones whose results can be trusted, and that understanding begins with coding the tests yourself. The longer argument is in [why teenagers should still learn to code in 2026](/blog/is-coding-worth-learning-2026).

FAQ

## Bankstown AI and programming questions

What Bankstown families and adult learners ask us first.

### How many people live in Bankstown?

The 2021 Census QuickStats for the Bankstown suburb record 34,933 residents and a median age of 34.

### What is the multiple comparisons problem?

The multiple comparisons problem is that when you run many statistical tests, some will look significant purely by chance. Testing 338 stations at the five per cent level would flag around 17 with no real change at all.

### What is the Benjamini-Hochberg method?

Benjamini-Hochberg is a correction that ranks the p-values from many tests and keeps the results that pass a sliding threshold. It controls the expected share of false discoveries among the results it keeps, so it loses far fewer real effects than the Bonferroni correction.

### What is the Bankstown station project?

Learners test 338 stations for a change between two years of monthly entries, then compare no correction (234 flagged), Benjamini-Hochberg (220) and Bonferroni (55), and run a shuffle check showing about 16 chance results.

### Why was Bankstown Station not significant?

Two very low months in its first year, May and June 2025, made its numbers so variable that the test could not separate a change from noise. Its p-value was 0.0596.

### Is this too advanced for school students?

The full project suits senior students, but the idea, that many tries produce lucky results, can be shown to younger children with coins and dice.

### Do you teach adults?

Yes, one to one or in adult groups, often for data or AI work.

### Do you have a Bankstown office?

No. All teaching is live online and we have no premises in Australia. The phone number on our site is Indian.

### How much are AI classes in Bankstown?

The first lesson is free. After that a group place costs USD 100 a month for two live lessons a week, about eight a month, with fifteen to twenty learners, or USD 150 a month one to one.

### What is the group size?

Fifteen to twenty learners, matched by level and pace. One-to-one lessons are offered if no group suits.
