[Open all courses](/courses) What you actually build ## What Moves a Port, a Qatari student's first honest machine learning project Every market we teach in gets a first project built on data from that country, because a model your own family can argue with is a model you remember. In Qatar it is the ports. Mwani Qatar runs Hamad Port, Old Doha Port and Al Ruwais Port and publishes a monthly bulletin. It is derived in class by subtraction: 866 for the half year, minus 552 published for the first quarter, minus 93 for April, minus 121 for June, leaves 100, which agrees with the published note that June was up 21 per cent on May. The 2025 anchor is 3,019 vessel calls and 1,458,708 TEU. The target is monthly container throughput in TEU, and the primary feature is vessel calls. The feature that teaches most is the one the student computes rather than copies, TEU per vessel call: 557.5, 499.8, 523.0, 545.6, 731.7 and 644.6 from January to June. Two things fall out of that column. Calls collapse 64 per cent from February to March, 237 down to 85, and TEU collapses with them, yet TEU per call barely moves: March was a fewer ships month, not a lighter ships month. May and June break the other way, 732 and 645 TEU per call on 100 and 121 vessels. The dataset disagrees with itself, and that is left in deliberately. The six monthly TEU figures sum to 493,060 against a published half year total of 493,105, a gap of 45 TEU that cannot be resolved from the bulletins. RoRo is the second trap. Units are published for January to March and those three add to exactly the half year total of 24,652, implying zero for the second quarter, yet the same ports handled 122,165 RoRo units across 2025. pandasscikit-learn matplotliblinear regression leave one out CVmissing data 1. #### Type the data in, then go and get more of it Six rows into a pandas DataFrame, then extend the series to eighteen months from Mwani Qatar's twelve 2025 releases. Hard check on your own collection: those twelve rows must sum to 3,019 vessel calls and 1,458,708 TEU. 2025 also publishes general and bulk cargo combined where 2026 splits them, so a schema that changes mid series has to be reconciled. 2. #### Reconcile before you model Sum the six months and compare against the published half year total. The 45 TEU gap surfaces here, and the correct response is to record it, not overwrite it. Real datasets disagree with their own totals, and saying so is the job. 3. #### Decide what a missing value means Weigh an empty RoRo quarter against the 122,165 units the same ports handled in 2025 and the claim stops being plausible. Encode RoRo as NaN with a boolean reported flag. Writing 0 for something a press release did not mention teaches a model a fact that never happened. 4. #### Engineer TEU per vessel call and look at it Plot the derived ratio against the raw TEU line, then write one sentence on what the February to March collapse rules out and a second on why May and June differ. This is where a spreadsheet becomes an argument. 5. #### Fit one feature, honestly A single feature linear regression, TEU against vessel calls, with LinearRegression from scikit-learn. Report the slope in TEU per additional call, the intercept, the R squared and each month's residual, then state that six observations describe six months and forecast nothing. 6. #### Add features and watch the model cheat Add general cargo, bulk cargo and livestock and R squared climbs toward 1.0. Five features against six rows means the model can memorise the table. Leave one out cross validation shows test error rising while training error falls: overfitting, on data the student typed in themselves. 7. #### Only then test the seasonal story Once the series reaches eighteen months, add a month of year feature and a Ramadan indicator, and test whether the flag reduces out of sample error. February overlapped Ramadan and was one of the strongest months of the half year, so the obvious story does not survive contact with the data. Publishing a negative result is most of what separates an analyst from a storyteller. The distinction ## Two different educations share one name We teach both, in that order, and we are direct about which one holds its value. Prompting follows a product, and products do not hold still. Model building sits on mathematics, and mathematics does not go out of date. #### Using AI tools - Write a prompt, read the answer, reword and try again - Learn the controls of whatever tool leads this year - The bar is an answer that reads convincingly - Transfers badly when the tool or the pricing changes - Worth roughly six weeks of anybody's time - We teach it briefly, including how to catch a confident wrong answer #### Building AI - Collect and clean data, then stand behind each decision made over it - Pick a model and know what assumption it makes on your behalf - Train, then report the error in units a non specialist can check - Identify whether the data, the features or the model is at fault - Deploy it, then watch it degrade against inputs you did not expect - Anchored in statistics, linear algebra and code, none of it perishable The distinction is sharper in Qatar than in most markets, because Qatar has built rather than bought. Fanar was trained here. The research institute behind it is here. The cloud region serving it is here. None of that is staffed by people who can only write prompts. Why now, in Qatar ## Fanar, QCRI and a national strategy that builds rather than buys Qatar published its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy in 2019 on six pillars: education, data access, employment, business, research and ethics. Its organising idea is the AI plus X paradigm, treating artificial intelligence as an enabling layer across healthcare, transport, energy and education rather than an industry of its own. An Artificial Intelligence Committee followed in 2021 under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The live programme is newer. Artificial Intelligence for Qatar launched on 15 February 2026, run by that ministry with the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council under a joint funding agreement, giving researchers, institutions and startups a dedicated platform, with priority on assistive AI in healthcare, education and tourism. The first proposal deadline fell on 11 March 2026. In December 2025, at World Summit AI Qatar, the ministry and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education announced a National Personalised Learning Platform with Scale AI. The frame around it is Digital Agenda 2030 and TASMU Smart Qatar. The most concrete piece is Fanar, Qatar's sovereign Arabic centred large language model, launched in December 2024 by the Qatar Computing Research Institute, sponsored by the communications ministry, with Qatar University, Qatar National Library, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Al Jazeera and the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies. The original model carried 9 billion parameters. The services platform runs on Fanar Star, a 7 billion parameter model trained from scratch, and Fanar Prime, built on Google's Gemma 2 9B. Fanar 2.0 is 27 billion parameters, and QCRI's Executive Director Dr Ahmed Elmagarmid has confirmed work has begun on Fanar 3.0 for December 2026. Fanar runs inside a closed ecosystem, so data need not leave the organisation. The point is not national pride. Training a model from scratch, evaluating it in Arabic and running it in a closed environment are jobs, done by people who understand tokenisation, training curves and evaluation. 27 billion Parameters in Fanar 2.0, Qatar's sovereign Arabic language model December 2026 Target release for Fanar 3.0, confirmed by QCRI 110 Interns in QCRI's summer programme, opened 10 May 2026 50,000 People targeted by the MCIT and Microsoft National Skilling Program over four years ### Where a Doha teenager can actually land QCRI is the credibility anchor for anyone studying this subject in Doha. Founded in 2010 and part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University under Qatar Foundation, it works in artificial intelligence, Arabic natural language processing, cyber security, health informatics and data science, and hires on two named tracks, Scientist through to Principal Scientist and Software Engineer through to Principal. Its Summer Internship Programme opened on 10 May 2026 with 110 interns. A teenager with two published projects is a plausible applicant there. One with a prompt engineering certificate is not. ### The cloud layer, and the data rich sectors Microsoft opened its first Qatar cloud datacentre region in Doha on 31 August 2022 with three availability zones, carrying Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform plus SAP, Snowflake, MongoDB, NetApp and Adobe. Forty three government and semi government entities have onboarded data analytics and AI services to Azure, the ministry and Microsoft run a National Skilling Program targeting 50,000 people over four years, and Ooredoo is a named Microsoft Cloud delivery partner. Ports and logistics are the other data rich sector, which is why the first project here uses real throughput figures. School and university ## How this sits beside your child's current curriculum ### The schools, and the boards they sit The Ministry of Education and Higher Education reports nearly 1,000 public and private schools in Qatar serving over 300,000 students: more than 300 public schools with over 100,000 students, and more than 600 private schools with over 200,000. Four examination systems matter in practice: CBSE at the large Indian curriculum schools in Doha, Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE and A level at British curriculum schools, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, and Qatar's own Secondary School Certificate in government schools. The CBSE cohort in Doha is unusually deep for a country of this size, because Indians are the largest single population group in Qatar, roughly 0.7 million people out of a total of about 3.37 million. The named schools include M.E.S. Indian School, established in 1974, English medium and affiliated to CBSE New Delhi, one of the oldest Indian schools in the Gulf, Birla Public School, established in 2004 and running KG1 to Grade XII, DPS Modern Indian School, Ideal Indian School, Shantiniketan Indian School, Rajagiri Public School, Bhavan's Public School, Loyola International School and Noble International School. If your child is in one of them, the CBSE Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science syllabus is board content we already teach to, and the machine learning ladder here runs beside it rather than against it. We also teach IGCSE Computer Science 0478, AP Computer Science A and Principles, and IB Diploma Computer Science, so exam preparation and the AI track come from one teacher. ### Education City, and what each campus actually offers Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, in Education City, is the destination that shapes this page. It offers five undergraduate majors: Artificial Intelligence, Biological Sciences, Business Administration, Computer Science and Information Systems. A standalone Artificial Intelligence major on a Doha campus is rare in the region. CMU has taught undergraduate computer science in Qatar since 2004, with the same degrees and curricula as the Pittsburgh campus. Hamad Bin Khalifa University, through its College of Science and Engineering, runs a two year MSc in Data Science and Engineering. Read its entry bar before your child chooses subjects: a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electronic or electrical engineering, information systems or a related field, with other engineering disciplines, mathematics and statistics also eligible; a minimum grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0; and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79. Qatar University is the national track, through the Department of Computer Science and Engineering: a BSc in Computer Science, a BSc in Computer Engineering, an MSc in Computing and doctorates in both, with competitive graduate admission on grade point average and English proficiency. One correction saves families a wasted year: Texas A&M University at Qatar, also in Education City, is engineering only, in chemical, electrical, mechanical and petroleum engineering, and does not offer computer science at all. How the classes run ## Timetabled to the Qatari week, Sunday to Thursday Qatar runs on Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, with no daylight saving, so Doha sits a fixed 2 hours 30 minutes behind Indian Standard Time. The bigger difference is the calendar. The Qatari week is Sunday to Thursday and the weekend is Friday and Saturday, so a weekend class in Doha means Friday or Saturday, not Saturday and Sunday. 18:00 to 19:00 Sunday to Thursday, Doha time, which is 20:30 to 21:30 in India. The default weekday slot for school age students. 20:00 to 21:00 Sunday to Thursday, Doha time, which is 22:30 to 23:30 in India. Working adults and older teens. Late for the teacher, so places are limited. 10:00 to 11:30 Saturday, Doha time, which is 12:30 to 14:00 in India. The ninety minute intensive, on Saturday rather than Friday because Friday midday is Jumu'ah prayer. ### What a session is Sixty minutes of live video on a weekday, ninety on the Saturday intensive, with a teacher who remembers what your child got stuck on last week. Screens are shared both ways, so the mistake is caught as it happens rather than marked three days later. Batches are five to eight students, or one to one. Between sessions students get a task, not a worksheet: something to build, break and bring back, with questions going to the same teacher. ### The Qatari school year, and how we work around it The Ministry of Education and Higher Education approved a single multi year academic calendar covering 2025-26, 2026-27 and 2027-28, announced in July 2025 so families could plan ahead. For 2026-27 students return on 30 August 2026, the mid year break falls in the last third of December with 27 December 2026 cited as the break date, first term final exams have moved to before Qatar National Day on 18 December rather than after it, and the staff holiday runs 4 June 2027 to 19 August 2027. Qatar National Day on 18 December is a national holiday under Law No. 11 of 2007, commemorating the unification of 1878, and falls on a Friday in 2026. National Sports Day is the second Tuesday of February, on 9 February 2027. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are set by the Moon Sighting Committee of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, and the Eid al-Fitr holiday has run as long as nine days. Ramadan gets its own timetable. Exam seasons matter too. CBSE boards fall in February and March, Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE and A level series run May to June and October to November, and IB Diploma exams in May. The Qatari school and working week runs Sunday to Thursday and the weekend is Friday and Saturday, so Qatar batches are timetabled Sunday to Thursday, not on the Indian Monday to Friday pattern. A weekend session in Doha means Friday or Saturday, and we place the long class on Saturday morning, because Friday midday is Jumu'ah prayer and Friday mornings are unreliable for attendance. ### Doha is 2 hours 30 minutes behind India, so what is the latest evening slot you can offer in Qatar time? The latest weekday slot for Qatar is 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm Arabia Standard Time, which is 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm for the teacher in India. Qatar keeps UTC+3 all year with no daylight saving, so the gap is a fixed 2 hours 30 minutes. Worked both ways: 6:00 pm in Doha is 8:30 pm in India, and 9:00 pm in India is 6:30 pm in Doha. ### During Ramadan the school day is cut short and the evening shifts around iftar. Do you run a separate timetable? Yes, a Ramadan variant rather than a pause. For Ramadan 1447 the Ministry of Education and Higher Education announced on 17 February 2026 that kindergarten and Grades 1 to 12 would run 09:00 to 12:30, with staff on a four hour day from 09:00 to 13:00. A 6:00 pm class sits badly against iftar, so Ramadan batches move earlier or later, agreed with each family beforehand. ### My son is in Grade 10 at a CBSE school in Doha and sits board exams in February and March. Can the course be reduced during board season? Yes. CBSE boards fall in February and March, and we routinely cut a student to one session a week, or pause entirely for six to eight weeks, holding the place in the batch. Doha carries a deep CBSE cohort, including M.E.S. Indian School, Birla Public School, DPS Modern Indian School and Bhavan's Public School, so this is an ordinary request, and the syllabus resumes where it stopped. ### How much of this course overlaps with Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478? The overlap is the programming half. IGCSE 0478 covers algorithms, data representation, problem solving and Python, and our teens track teaches that material in its first stage. What 0478 does not reach is machine learning itself: splitting a real dataset honestly, fitting a model, measuring the error in the units of the problem, and judging whether an improvement is real. ### Will this produce a portfolio we can actually use for Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar or the HBKU data science MSc? That is what it is built for. Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, in Education City, offers an Artificial Intelligence major alongside Computer Science and Information Systems, and has taught undergraduate computer science in Doha since 2004. Hamad Bin Khalifa University runs a two year MSc in Data Science and Engineering asking for a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79. Both respond to work a reader can open, so every student finishes with published projects at real links, not a certificate alone. ### Will the projects use real Qatar data rather than the same generic datasets every other student submits? Yes. The first project models monthly container throughput across Hamad Port, Old Doha Port and Al Ruwais Port from Mwani Qatar's published figures. Those ports moved 493,105 TEU in the first half of 2026 and 1,458,708 TEU across 2025. The student types the rows in, reconciles them against the published totals, finds where the totals disagree, and writes that down. That is their own work, not a downloaded notebook. ### Can we pay in Qatari riyals, and what do the group and one to one fees come to in QR?
