Why 11+ prep often backfires

## A tricky 11+ ratio problem — solved by drawing it out.

Worked example · numerical reasoning

**The question:** "Sweets are shared between Amy and Ben in the ratio 3 : 5. Ben gets 12 more than Amy. How many sweets are there altogether?" Under time pressure, children try random sums and get lost.

**How we teach it.** The trick the 11+ wants is to see a ratio as equal-sized parts, and to draw them. Amy has 3 parts, Ben has 5 parts. Ben's extra 2 parts are the "12 more":

Amy: ▢▢▢ Ben: ▢▢▢▢▢Ben's extra parts = 5 − 3 = 2 parts = 12 sweetsso 1 part = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 sweetstotal parts = 3 + 5 = 8 → total = 8 × 6 = **48 sweets**

No equation, no panic — just "draw the parts and find what one part is worth." That single habit cracks a huge family of 11+ ratio and proportion questions, however they're worded. We teach children a small kit of these reliable moves, so an unfamiliar question becomes "oh, I know how to start this" instead of a blank. That calm confidence is worth more marks on the day than any amount of frantic drilling.
