## TMUA and STEP Preparation (Oxford MAT Now TMUA)

*School maths, used with real depth: reasoning about arguments for the TMUA, and long, careful written solutions for STEP.*

Two tests now sit at the centre of UK university admissions maths. The first is the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA), run by UAT-UK. Its content specification says "The test will consist of two 75 minute papers, taken one after the other. Each paper will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions." Paper 1 is Applications of Mathematical Knowledge and Paper 2 is Mathematical Reasoning; there is "no formulae booklet", "Candidates may not use calculators", and there is "no penalty for incorrect answers". UAT-UK says the TMUA "is based on content typically covered within Higher Level GCSE mathematics courses or AS level mathematics", and that results are reported "on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high) to one decimal place". UAT-UK's 2027 entry course list names seven universities using the TMUA for some courses: Durham, Imperial College London, the LSE, Cambridge, Oxford, Warwick and UCL.

The Oxford Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) has ended. Oxford's Mathematical Institute says: "The MAT will not take place, and all applicants for Mathematics or Computer Science (including joint honours courses) will take the TMUA instead." It describes the MAT as "a test used from 2007 to 2025". Oxford still publishes MAT past papers and solutions, and they remain fine problem-solving practice.

The second test is STEP, the Sixth Term Examination Paper, administered by OCR. OCR says STEP "is used by the University of Cambridge, the University of Warwick and Imperial College London", and Cambridge says STEP is used "as part of almost all conditional offers from Cambridge for" Mathematics. OCR's specification says STEP 2 and STEP 3 "will each be a 3-hour paper" of 12 questions: eight pure, two mechanics and two probability and statistics, each worth 20 marks, with candidates "assessed on the six questions best answered". OCR lists STEP 2 on 14 June 2027 and STEP 3 on 21 June 2027.

Cambridge itself says the TMUA "uses mathematics you will have already learned in your school studies, so there is no need to take a preparation course or to do much preparation beyond familiarising yourself with the test format". We take that seriously. This course is not a shortcut or a set of tricks: it is a place to do hard mathematics regularly with a teacher, to learn the logic and proof that TMUA Paper 2 tests, and to write the long, justified solutions STEP marks. Practice uses our own original problems, plus the free official materials (UAT-UK practice papers and Notes on Logic and Proof, Oxford's MAT archive, and STEP past papers and the Cambridge STEP Support Programme), which students use where they are published. We never copy official questions into our materials. We are independent of UAT-UK, OCR and every university, and we make no promise of scores, offers or places.

**What Makes This Different:**

- Built around the 2027 entry reality: TMUA for Oxford and Cambridge maths and computer science, with the Oxford MAT archive kept as practice
- Logic and proof taught directly for TMUA Paper 2: necessary and sufficient conditions, converses, counterexamples and finding the error in a proof
- No-calculator, no-formula-booklet fluency, so the mathematics is fast enough to leave time for thinking
- A STEP stage with full written solutions marked in detail, because OCR says marks may be lost if examiners cannot follow your working
- Original problems for every topic, plus the free official papers used where UAT-UK, Oxford, OCR and Cambridge publish them
- Honest about what preparation can do, quoting the universities' own advice, and never promising scores or offers

### Learning Path

**Phase 1:** Fluency and depth in the TMUA content: algebra, functions, sequences, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, logarithms and calculus, without a calculator

**Phase 2:** Mathematical reasoning for TMUA Paper 2: logic of arguments, proof methods, counterexamples and identifying errors in proofs, then timed TMUA-style papers

**Phase 3:** STEP 2 and STEP 3: extended pure problems, mechanics and probability, full written solutions, timed 3-hour practice and the June 2027 papers

**Career Outcomes:**

- Speed and accuracy in A Level pure mathematics without a calculator or formula booklet

## Faqs

**Question:** What is the TMUA?

**Answer:** The Test of Mathematics for University Admission, run by UAT-UK. Its specification lists two 75-minute papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each: Paper 1, Applications of Mathematical Knowledge, and Paper 2, Mathematical Reasoning. There are no calculators and no formula booklet, and wrong answers carry no penalty.

**Question:** Has the Oxford MAT been replaced by the TMUA?

**Answer:** Yes. Oxford's Mathematical Institute says "The MAT will not take place, and all applicants for Mathematics or Computer Science (including joint honours courses) will take the TMUA instead." It describes the MAT as a test used from 2007 to 2025. Oxford's MAT past papers and solutions are still published and remain good problem-solving practice.

**Question:** Which universities use the TMUA?

**Answer:** UAT-UK's course list for 2027 entry names Durham University, Imperial College London, the London School of Economics, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the University of Warwick and UCL, for some courses in mathematics, economics or computer science. Requirements differ by course, and some list it as recommended rather than compulsory, so always check each university's own course page.

**Question:** When is the TMUA?

**Answer:** For 2027 entry, UAT-UK ran an October sitting from 12 to 16 October 2026, with booking closed on 28 September 2026 and results due on Monday 16 November 2026, and runs a January sitting from 4 to 8 January 2027. Most Oxford and Cambridge applicants must sit in October. Dates for 2028 entry will appear on UAT-UK's site.

**Question:** Do I really need a preparation course for the TMUA?

**Answer:** Cambridge says there is "no need to take a preparation course or to do much preparation beyond familiarising yourself with the test format", and UAT-UK publishes free practice materials. We agree that tricks are not the point. This course is for students who want regular, guided work on hard problems, logic and proof with a teacher, and it continues into STEP, which needs much more sustained practice.

**Question:** What is STEP and who needs it?

**Answer:** STEP is the Sixth Term Examination Paper, administered by OCR. OCR says it is used by the University of Cambridge, the University of Warwick and Imperial College London, and Cambridge says it is part of almost all of its conditional offers for Mathematics. There are two papers, STEP 2 and STEP 3, and offers usually name one or both.

**Question:** How is STEP structured, and when is it in 2027?

**Answer:** OCR's specification says each STEP paper is 3 hours with 12 questions: eight pure, two mechanics and two probability and statistics, each worth 20 marks, and only the six highest-scoring answers count. Calculators are not permitted. OCR lists STEP 2 on 14 June 2027 and STEP 3 on 21 June 2027, with registration through a school or college from 1 March to 4 May 2027.

**Question:** Do I need Further Maths?

**Answer:** For the TMUA, UAT-UK says the content is typically covered in Higher GCSE maths or AS level maths. For STEP, OCR bases STEP 2 on A Level Maths and AS Further Maths pure content and STEP 3 on A Level Further Maths pure content, so Further Maths matters a great deal for the STEP stage.

**Question:** Do you use real past papers?

**Answer:** Yes, where they are published, and on the publishers' own sites: UAT-UK's practice papers, Oxford's MAT archive, OCR's STEP past papers and Cambridge's STEP Support Programme. Our own class problems and mock papers are original and written by us. We never copy official questions into our materials.

**Question:** Can you guarantee a high TMUA score or a STEP grade?

**Answer:** No, and nobody honest can. Results depend on the student, the paper and the work they put in. What we give is steady practice on hard problems, written feedback on proofs and solutions, and a monthly timed paper.

**Question:** Are you connected with UAT-UK, OCR, Oxford or Cambridge?

**Answer:** No. We are an independent online school and are not connected with or endorsed by UAT-UK, OCR or any university. Students register for the TMUA through UAT-UK and for STEP through their school or college, and should always check current dates and rules on the official sites.

**Question:** How are the classes run, and can we try one?

**Answer:** Live online classes, twice a week, with a real teacher, in a group batch of 15 to 20 students or 1-on-1. Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays. The first class is free, and there is no obligation to enrol.

**Question:** Can I watch how you teach before enrolling in this course?

**Answer:** Yes. Full recordings of real, unedited classes for ages 13 and up are free to watch: Free to watch. No payment, no card, just a quick Google sign-in. These recordings show how we teach, not the exact syllabus of this course. Some classes are in English and some in Hindi; everyone follows at their own pace. Watch a class end to end, like you are in it. Sessions are interactive and each moment builds on the last.

**Question:** Can I enroll without a live demo?

**Answer:** Yes. Choose a plan on this page and enrol directly. A demo is optional: if you would like to see a full class with a mentor first, book a Priority Demo, a live class of about 45 to 60 minutes. Questions: WhatsApp +91 91233 66161 or email connect@modernagecoders.com.

## How enrolment works

1. **Pick a plan.** Group (15 to 20 students), Mini Batch (up to 6, India only) or 1-on-1 with your own mentor. Pay monthly, or for 6 months at once and save.
2. **Press Enrol and pay.** Fill in the student's name, email and phone, then pay securely: UPI, cards or net banking in India, or a debit or credit card from any other country.
3. **Fix your class timing.** After paying, WhatsApp or call +91 91233 66161 with the student's name and your preferred time. We confirm the batch or 1-on-1 slot and send the class link.
4. **Start learning.** Join your first live class at the time you chose. Your mentor takes it from there.

Want to see a class first? Book a Priority Demo: a live class of about 45 to 60 minutes with a mentor reserved for you. If you enrol, the demo fee is adjusted against your first month's fee. Share your demo Order ID with us on WhatsApp and we take it off.

Pay monthly and cancel any time, or pay for 6 months at once and save. Stop a 6-month plan early and every session left is refunded.
