## SHSAT Math Prep: NYC Specialized High Schools Test

*Grade-level math, used in unfamiliar multi-step problems, one question at a time and without a calculator: the exact habits the new adaptive SHSAT rewards.*

New York City Public Schools describes the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) as "the exam used as the sole factor to determine admissions to New York City's Specialized High Schools (except LaGuardia High School, whose admissions are determined through an audition process)." The eight testing schools it lists are Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn Technical High School, High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for Sciences at York College, Staten Island Technical High School and Stuyvesant High School. The test is for New York City residents in grade 8, or in grade 9 for the first time.

The test changed in fall 2026. NYC Public Schools says: "Beginning in fall 2026, the SHSAT will move to a computer-adaptive test." There are two sections, "50 questions per section", and a standard test time of 180 minutes. The math section "includes questions about ratios and proportional relationships, number system and expressions, equations, inequalities, statistics and probability, and geometry", with multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank and technology-enhanced items. In the math section students "will not be able to return to the question after they have advanced." Each subject also has "10 unscored field-test items". The 2027 admissions guide says math questions on grade 8 forms "are based on the New York State's learning standards through Grade 7", that the math items "will require you to apply familiar Math skills to complex, multi-step problems", and that formulas "will NOT be given". Calculators are on the guide's list of items not to bring.

This course teaches that math in depth. Students build fluency and accuracy without a calculator, learn to set up multi-step word problems, master the grade 7 and grade 8 content the test draws on, and practice answering one question at a time with no going back, the way the adaptive test works. Practice uses our own original problems, plus the four free official practice tests on the NYC SHSAT Portal, which students take there. We never copy official test items.

The same grade-level math also supports two other selective-school tests. Hunter College High School's entrance exam (for 7th grade entry, on Wednesday, January 27, 2027) has a math section that, in Hunter's words, "assesses students' understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills". Boston Public Schools uses a student's MAP Growth test score and GPA for its exam schools. We are independent of NYC Public Schools, Hunter College High School and Boston Public Schools, and we make no promise of scores or offers.

**What Makes This Different:**

- Built for the computer-adaptive SHSAT that NYC Public Schools introduced in fall 2026: 50 math questions, one at a time, no going back
- No-calculator fluency taught on purpose: fractions, decimals, percents and negative numbers done fast and checked
- Multi-step word problems broken into a repeatable routine: read, model, solve, check
- Grade-matched content: the grade 7 standards behind grade 8 forms and the grade 8 standards behind grade 9 forms
- Monthly timed practice sections of our own original problems, plus the four free official practice tests on the NYC SHSAT Portal
- Honest about admissions: the SHSAT is the sole factor for the eight testing schools, and we promise learning, never a seat

### Learning Path

## Faqs

**Question:** What is the SHSAT?

**Answer:** It is the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test run by New York City Public Schools. NYC Public Schools calls it "the exam used as the sole factor to determine admissions" to its Specialized High Schools, except LaGuardia High School, which admits by audition. It is for NYC residents in grade 8, or in grade 9 for the first time.

**Question:** Is the SHSAT computer adaptive now?

**Answer:** Yes. NYC Public Schools says "Beginning in fall 2026, the SHSAT will move to a computer-adaptive test." Each section has 50 questions, the standard time is 180 minutes, and in the math section students cannot return to a question after moving on. Each subject also includes 10 unscored field-test items.

**Question:** What math is on the SHSAT?

**Answer:** NYC Public Schools lists "ratios and proportional relationships, number system and expressions, equations, inequalities, statistics and probability, and geometry". The 2027 admissions guide says grade 8 forms are based on New York State standards through grade 7, and grade 9 forms on standards through grade 8. Questions are multiple choice, fill in the blank and technology-enhanced items.

**Question:** Can you use a calculator on the SHSAT?

**Answer:** No. Calculators are on the official guide's list of items not to bring, and the guide says formulas will not be given. That is why this course trains arithmetic fluency and formula recall without a calculator from the first week.

**Question:** When is the SHSAT in 2026?

**Answer:** NYC Public Schools lists fall 2026 dates of Wednesday, November 18 at school for grade 8 students in public middle schools that end in grade 8; Saturday, November 14 or Sunday, November 15 at a central site for other grade 8 students; and Saturday, November 21 for grade 9 students. Registration in MySchools closed on October 30. Families planning for the fall 2027 test should watch the NYC Public Schools site for new dates.

**Question:** When should my child start preparing?

**Answer:** Many families start in grade 7, because the test is taken in the fall of grade 8. A student testing in grade 9 can also join, with extra attention to the grade 8 standards. In the free demo class the teacher looks at your child's current level and suggests a start date.

**Question:** Do you use real SHSAT questions?

**Answer:** No. Our practice problems are original and written by us at the test's level. Students also take the four free official practice tests on the NYC SHSAT Portal, which mirror the real exam, and we review their reasoning in class. We never copy official items into our materials.

**Question:** Does this course help with the Hunter College High School exam?

**Answer:** The math overlaps strongly. Hunter's exam, on Wednesday, January 27, 2027 for 7th grade entry, has reading, math and writing sections in three hours. Hunter also says it "does not publish any portion of the actual exam and does not endorse any test preparation service or agency", so we teach the math and reasoning, not imitation items. A strong sixth grader can join after the free demo class if the teacher agrees the level fits.

**Question:** Does this course help with the Boston exam schools?

**Answer:** It builds the same grade-level math. Boston Public Schools uses a student's MAP Growth test score and GPA for exam school admission, and says applicants must take the MAP Growth test. Check Boston Public Schools' current pages for eligibility and dates.

**Question:** Can you guarantee a Specialized High School seat?

**Answer:** No, and nobody honestly can. Seats depend on the student's score, their choices and the scores of other applicants. What the course gives is steady practice, monthly timed sections and a clear plan for every weak topic.

**Question:** Are you connected with NYC Public Schools?

**Answer:** No. We are an independent online school and are not connected with or endorsed by New York City Public Schools, the Specialized High Schools, Hunter College High School or Boston Public Schools. Always check current rules and dates on their official sites.

**Question:** How are the classes run, and can we try one?

**Answer:** Live online classes, twice a week, with a real teacher, in a group batch of 15 to 20 students or 1-on-1. Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays. The first class is free, with no obligation to enrol.

**Question:** Can I watch how you teach before enrolling in this course?

**Answer:** Yes. Full recordings of real, unedited classes for ages 13 and up are free to watch: Free to watch. No payment, no card, just a quick Google sign-in. These recordings show how we teach, not the exact syllabus of this course. Some classes are in English and some in Hindi; everyone follows at their own pace. Watch a class end to end, like you are in it. Sessions are interactive and each moment builds on the last.

**Question:** Can I enroll without a live demo?

**Answer:** Yes. Choose a plan on this page and enrol directly. A demo is optional: if you would like to see a full class with a mentor first, book a Priority Demo, a live class of about 45 to 60 minutes. Questions: WhatsApp +91 91233 66161 or email connect@modernagecoders.com.
