## Middle School Math Competitions

*The problem-solving toolkit behind MATHCOUNTS, the AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo, built idea by idea and tested against the clock.*

Middle school math competitions ask for something school maths rarely does: seeing an unfamiliar problem, choosing an idea, and getting it right quickly. The three best-known contests for this age reward the same core toolkit. MATHCOUNTS is a national program for students in grades 6 to 8, with four levels of competition (school, chapter, state and national) and four rounds: the Sprint Round of 30 problems in 40 minutes without a calculator, the Target Round of four pairs of problems with 6 minutes per pair, the Team Round of 10 problems in 20 minutes, and the optional fast-paced Countdown Round. Math Kangaroo USA is a 75-minute multiple-choice test with 30 questions for students in grade 5 and above, scored 3, 4 or 5 points per question with no points taken away for wrong answers. The AMC 8, from the Mathematical Association of America, is a multiple-choice contest for middle school students.

This 6-month live course teaches that shared toolkit in a deliberate order: arithmetic and number sense, number theory, algebra and word problems, counting and probability, geometry, then patterns, sequences and logic. Every topic is taught through problems written in the styles of these contests, and every month includes a timed round so speed and accuracy grow together.

The final two months are contest craft: Sprint and Countdown speed without a calculator, Target and Team strategy with one, and multiple-choice technique for the AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo. Students keep an error log from the first week, so they learn as much from mistakes as from successes. We teach the mathematics and the habits; we never promise medals or qualification, and families register for each contest through the routes the organisers set.

**What Makes This Different:**

- One toolkit for three contests: MATHCOUNTS, the AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo reward the same core ideas, so students prepare for all three at once
- Topics taught in a deliberate order, from number sense to geometry, so each idea builds on the one before
- A timed round every month, so speed and accuracy are trained together rather than left to the final weeks
- Round-specific craft: no-calculator speed for Sprint and Countdown, calculator strategy for Target and Team, and elimination for multiple-choice tests
- An error log kept from week one, reviewed with the teacher every month
- Problems written in the contest styles, plus the official free sample problems the organisers publish

### Learning Path

## Faqs

**Question:** Which contests does this course prepare for?

**Answer:** MATHCOUNTS, the AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo. All three reward the same core ideas: number theory, counting and probability, algebra, geometry and logic. The course teaches that toolkit, then adds round-specific strategy for MATHCOUNTS and multiple-choice technique for the AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo.

**Question:** What are the MATHCOUNTS rounds?

**Answer:** MATHCOUNTS has four rounds. The Sprint Round is 30 problems in 40 minutes without a calculator. The Target Round gives four pairs of problems, with 6 minutes per pair and a calculator assumed. The Team Round is 10 problems in 20 minutes, taken officially by a school's four-student team. The Countdown Round focuses on speed and accuracy, with a maximum of 45 seconds per problem and no calculator,, optional at the school, chapter and state levels.

**Question:** How does Math Kangaroo work?

**Answer:** Math Kangaroo is a 75-minute multiple-choice test. Students in grade 5 and above answer 30 questions; a third are worth 3 points, a third 4 points and a third 5 points, and no points are taken away for wrong answers. In the USA the individual competition is held in March, organised through Math Kangaroo centers.

**Question:** What about the AMC 8?

**Answer:** The AMC 8 is a multiple-choice contest for middle school students run by the Mathematical Association of America. The course covers the topics and multiple-choice technique it rewards. Contest dates, format details and registration routes are set by the MAA each year, so check its official page for the current rules.

**Question:** How do we register for these contests?

**Answer:** Through the organisers, not through us. MATHCOUNTS works through registered schools, and students whose school does not take part can register as non-school competitors. Math Kangaroo is organised through its own centers. The AMC 8 is offered through schools and other hosts as the MAA sets out. We are happy to explain the options during the demo.

**Question:** Is my child ready for this course?

**Answer:** The course suits students roughly aged 10 to 14 who are comfortable with school maths and enjoy a challenge. They do not need contest experience. The first-week diagnostic shows where to start, and problem sets have core and stretch problems so both newer and more experienced students are stretched.

**Question:** How is this different from your Olympiad Mathematics course?

**Answer:** Our Olympiad Mathematics course is for older, stronger students working toward proof-based olympiad problems and high school contests. This course is the step before: the problem-solving toolkit and contest habits for middle school competitions. Students who finish it and enjoy competition maths often move on to the olympiad course.

**Question:** Will this guarantee a medal or a place at nationals?

**Answer:** No, and we would not promise it. Results depend on the student, the contest and the day. What the course gives is a solid toolkit, regular timed practice and an honest error log, so you can see real progress month by month.

**Question:** How are the classes run?

**Answer:** Live online classes, twice a week, with a real teacher, in a group of 15 to 20 students, a mini batch of up to 6, or one to one. Current fees for your region are shown in the pricing section of this page.

**Question:** Can we try a class first?

**Answer:** Yes. Book a free demo class. The teacher works through a few contest-style problems with your child, sees how they think, and suggests whether group, mini batch or one-to-one classes fit best. There is no obligation to enrol.

**Question:** Can I watch how you teach before enrolling in this course?

**Answer:** Yes. Full recordings of real, unedited classes for ages 13 and up are free to watch: Free to watch. No payment, no card, just a quick Google sign-in. These recordings show how we teach, not the exact syllabus of this course. Some classes are in English and some in Hindi; everyone follows at their own pace. Watch a class end to end, like you are in it. Sessions are interactive and each moment builds on the last.

**Question:** Can I enroll without a live demo?

**Answer:** Yes. Choose a plan on this page and enrol directly. A demo is optional: if you would like to see a full class with a mentor first, book a Priority Demo, a live class of about 45 to 60 minutes. Questions: WhatsApp +91 91233 66161 or email connect@modernagecoders.com.
