## KS2 SATs Maths: Arithmetic, Reasoning and Times Tables

*Instant times tables, a calm arithmetic paper and reasoning answers that show their thinking, built up over eight months rather than crammed in April.*

The key stage 2 maths test is three papers. The test framework sets them out plainly: Paper 1 is arithmetic, 40 marks in 30 minutes, and Papers 2 and 3 are mathematical reasoning, 35 marks and 40 minutes each, so 110 marks across 110 minutes in total. In 2027 the maths papers are timetabled for Wednesday 12 May (Papers 1 and 2) and Thursday 13 May (Paper 3). Results come back as a scaled score between 80 and 120, and a score of at least 100 meets the expected standard.

Underneath all of it sit the times tables. The national curriculum expects children to have memorised the tables up to 12 by the end of Year 4, and the multiplication tables check tests exactly that: 25 questions, six seconds each, taken in June of Year 4. A child who still counts up in fives to find 7 times 5 loses time on every paper, so this course starts there.

The course runs in four phases: times tables to instant recall, the arithmetic paper method by method, the reasoning papers question type by question type, and finally full papers under real timing. Classes are live and small, so the teacher sees each child's working, not just the answer, and parents get a short written note every month on what has moved and what is next.

**What Makes This Different:**

- Built from the government's own key stage 2 mathematics test framework: the three papers, their marks and timings, and the resource list children actually use
- Times tables first, because the multiplication tables check and every SATs paper lean on instant recall
- The arithmetic paper taught as a set of written methods, each practised until it is automatic and checked
- Reasoning taught by question type: multi-step word problems, explain-your-answer questions, measures, geometry and statistics
- Full papers under real timing in the last two months, marked against the published mark schemes
- Calm by design: short daily practice and clear progress notes for parents, not late-night cramming

### Learning Path

**Phase 1:** Times tables to instant recall: every table to 12 by 12, the related division facts, and timed practice in the multiplication check format

**Phase 2:** The arithmetic paper: place value, the four written methods, fractions, decimals and percentages as calculations

**Phase 3:** The reasoning papers: word problems, measures, geometry, statistics and explaining an answer

**Phase 4:** Full papers under timing: past and practice papers, marked and reviewed, with a calm plan for test week

**Career Outcomes:**

- Times tables to 12 by 12 recalled instantly, with the matching division facts
- Secure written methods for every calculation type on the arithmetic paper
- A routine for reading, planning and checking reasoning questions
- Experience of full papers under real timing before test week
- A firm base for Year 7 maths, whatever the result

## PHASE 1: Times Tables to Instant Recall (Months 1-2, Weeks 1-8)

Every table up to 12 by 12 and its division facts, learned through patterns first and speed second. Year 4 children practise in the format of the multiplication tables check; older children use it as a warm-up for the papers.

## Faqs

**Question:** What is in the KS2 SATs maths test?

**Answer:** Three papers. Paper 1 is arithmetic, 40 marks in 30 minutes. Papers 2 and 3 are mathematical reasoning, 35 marks and 40 minutes each. That is 110 marks over 110 minutes in total, set out in the government's key stage 2 mathematics test framework.

**Question:** When are the KS2 SATs maths papers in 2027?

**Answer:** The government's primary assessment dates page timetables maths Papers 1 and 2 for Wednesday 12 May 2027 and Paper 3 for Thursday 13 May 2027. The multiplication tables check for Year 4 runs in a two-week window from Monday 7 June 2027.

**Question:** What score does my child need in SATs maths?

**Answer:** Results are scaled scores from 80 to 120. A scaled score of at least 100 means the child has met the expected standard. The number of raw marks needed for 100 can change from year to year, because the difficulty of the tests varies.

**Question:** What is the Year 4 multiplication tables check?

**Answer:** A short on-screen check taken in June of Year 4. Each child answers 25 times tables questions up to 12 by 12, with six seconds for each one. It checks instant recall, which is why this course spends its first two months on times tables.

**Question:** Can children use a calculator in the SATs maths test?

**Answer:** The resource list in the test framework is a pen or pencil, a ruler and an optional rubber for the arithmetic paper, plus an angle measurer or protractor and a mirror for the reasoning papers. A calculator is not on it, so this course teaches every calculation by hand.

**Question:** Is SATs maths the same as 11 plus maths?

**Answer:** No. SATs are national tests taken by Year 6 children in England. The 11 plus is a selection test set by some areas and schools, usually in Year 5 or early Year 6, with its own format. There is overlap in the maths, and we also run a separate 11 plus maths course.

**Question:** Are the SATs changing?

**Answer:** The government has said future assessment arrangements are under review after the Curriculum and Assessment Review, and that arrangements for the 2026 to 2027 academic year will stay the same. We follow the published framework and will update the course if anything changes.

**Question:** How are the classes run?

**Answer:** Live online classes with a real teacher, either in a group of 15 to 20 children at a similar level or one to one. Practice is short and frequent, and parents get a written note each month. Current fees for your region are shown in the pricing section of this page.

**Question:** My child is in Year 4. Is it too early?

**Answer:** Not for times tables and arithmetic. Year 4 is when the multiplication check happens, and secure tables make every later year easier. Younger children follow the first two phases at their own pace and join the paper practice later.

**Question:** Can we try a lesson first?

**Answer:** Yes. Book a free demo class. The teacher plays a few times tables games and arithmetic questions with your child, sees where they are, and suggests whether group or one-to-one teaching fits better. There is no obligation to enrol.

**Question:** Can I watch how you teach before enrolling in this course?

**Answer:** Yes. Full recordings of real, unedited classes for ages 6 to 12 are free to watch: Free to watch. No payment, no card, just a quick Google sign-in. These recordings show how we teach, not the exact syllabus of this course. Some classes are in English and some in Hindi; everyone follows at their own pace. Watch a class end to end, like you are in it. Sessions are interactive and each moment builds on the last.

**Question:** Can I enroll without a live demo?

**Answer:** Yes. Choose a plan on this page and enrol directly. A demo is optional: if you would like to see a full class with a mentor first, book a Priority Demo, a live class of about 45 to 60 minutes. Questions: WhatsApp +91 91233 66161 or email connect@modernagecoders.com.
