## College Math Placement Test Prep: ALEKS, ACCUPLACER, TSIA2, CLEP

*Rebuild the math, then meet the test: arithmetic, algebra and functions relearned properly, so the placement reflects what you can really do.*

Most US colleges place new students into math courses using a placement test, and the result decides whether a student starts in a credit-bearing course or a support course. The four tests this course covers work differently.

ACCUPLACER, from College Board, is "a series of tests that evaluate students' skills in reading, writing, and math to determine if additional support will be required for enrolling in credit bearing courses". Its math tests include Arithmetic; Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS); and Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF). College Board says the QAS test "is a computer adaptive assessment" covering rational numbers, ratio and proportional relationships, exponents, algebraic expressions, linear equations and applications, probability and sets, descriptive statistics and geometry concepts, and that AAF covers "linear, quadratic, rational, radical, polynomial, and exponential" equations and functions, "some geometry and trigonometry concepts". All its questions "are multiple choice in format".

ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL), from McGraw Hill, uses an open-response placement assessment. McGraw Hill says: "In 25 questions or less, PPL's open-response Placement Assessment determines students' knowledge across 314 topics and places them into courses from Basic Math to Calculus", and that PPL comes with "12 months' access to a personalized learning module and up to five assessment attempts" (each college sets its own rules).

The TSIA2 is the Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0, required for non-exempt students entering Texas public colleges. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's brochure says the math College Readiness Classification test "is made up of 20 questions" across quantitative, algebraic, geometric and spatial, and probabilistic and statistical reasoning, and that a student is college ready with a score in the range of 950 to 990 on it, or a lower score with a diagnostic level of 6. The TSIA2 is computer adaptive and untimed.

CLEP College Algebra, also from College Board, is a credit-by-exam test. College Board says it "contains approximately 60 questions to be answered in 90 minutes", with an on-screen TI-30XS MultiView scientific calculator, and that the American Council on Education recommends a credit-granting score of 50 for 3 semester hours, though "Each institution reserves the right to set its own credit-granting policy".

This course teaches the mathematics underneath all four, from fractions and percents through linear and quadratic equations to functions, exponentials and logarithms, then trains students in each test's format with our own original practice questions and the official free practice on the publishers' sites. Placement tests should show what a student truly knows: we never help during a placement test, and we follow each college's integrity rules. We are independent of College Board, McGraw Hill, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and every college, and we make no promise of placements, scores or credit.

**What Makes This Different:**

- One course for four common tests: ALEKS PPL, ACCUPLACER QAS and AAF, TSIA2 math and CLEP College Algebra
- A diagnostic first, so each student studies only the topics they need
- Real relearning of arithmetic and algebra for adults who have been away from math for years
- Format training for each test: open-response for ALEKS, adaptive multiple choice for ACCUPLACER and TSIA2, timed with a calculator for CLEP
- Original practice sets every two weeks, plus the official free practice on College Board, ALEKS and THECB pages
- Honest and integrity-first: no help during any real placement test, and no promises of placement or credit

## Faqs

**Question:** Which placement test does my college use?

**Answer:** It depends on the college, so check its testing or advising page. Many use ALEKS PPL or ACCUPLACER, Texas public colleges use the TSIA2 for non-exempt students, and CLEP College Algebra is a separate credit-by-exam test. In the free demo class we help you identify your test and the course you are aiming for.

**Question:** What is on the ACCUPLACER math tests?

**Answer:** College Board's math tests include Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS), and Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF). College Board says QAS covers topics such as rational numbers, ratios, exponents, linear equations, probability and sets, statistics and geometry, and AAF covers linear, quadratic, rational, radical, polynomial and exponential equations and functions, plus some geometry and trigonometry. Both are computer adaptive and multiple choice.

**Question:** How does ALEKS PPL work?

**Answer:** McGraw Hill says its open-response Placement Assessment uses 25 questions or less to measure knowledge across 314 topics, placing students from Basic Math to Calculus. It also describes 12 months' access to a personalized learning module and up to five assessment attempts, though each college sets its own rules on attempts.

**Question:** What score do I need on the TSIA2 math test?

**Answer:** The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's brochure says a student is college ready in mathematics with a score of 950 to 990 on the College Readiness Classification test, or a score below 950 with a diagnostic level of 6 on the Diagnostic test. The CRC test has 20 questions, and the TSIA2 is computer adaptive and untimed.

**Question:** What is CLEP College Algebra?

**Answer:** A College Board credit-by-exam test with approximately 60 questions in 90 minutes and an on-screen scientific calculator. College Board lists algebraic operations (25%), equations and inequalities (25%), functions and their properties (30%) and number systems and operations (20%). The American Council on Education recommends a credit-granting score of 50, but each college sets its own policy.

**Question:** Can you help me during my placement test?

**Answer:** No. A placement test should show what you truly know, so that you start in a course you can succeed in. We teach the math beforehand and never help during a real test. McGraw Hill, for example, describes lockdown browser and webcam proctoring for ALEKS PPL, and colleges set their own integrity rules.

**Question:** I am an adult and have not done math in years. Is this for me?

**Answer:** Yes. The course starts with a diagnostic and rebuilds arithmetic from fractions and percents, so nobody is left behind. Many adults find that relearning the basics properly makes algebra much easier.

**Question:** How long do I need to prepare?

**Answer:** The full course is 4 months. If your test date is close, a focused 1-on-1 plan can target only the topics your diagnostic shows you need. Retesting rules differ by test and college, so check yours before you book.

**Question:** Can you guarantee a higher placement or college credit?

**Answer:** No, and nobody honest can. Placement and credit decisions belong to your college. What we give is real relearning of the math, honest practice in your test's format and a clear plan for your weak topics.

**Question:** Are you connected with College Board, McGraw Hill or THECB?

**Answer:** No. We are an independent online school and are not connected with or endorsed by College Board, McGraw Hill, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board or any college. ACCUPLACER, CLEP and ALEKS are trademarks of their owners.

**Question:** How are the classes run, and can we try one?

**Answer:** Live online classes, twice a week, with a real teacher, in a group batch of 15 to 20 students or 1-on-1. Weekdays or weekends, flexible: choose your batch, or for a very personalised plan choose 1-on-1 at your convenience, weekend mornings or weekdays. The first class is free, with no obligation to enrol.

**Question:** Can I watch how you teach before enrolling in this course?

**Answer:** Yes. Full recordings of real, unedited classes for ages 13 and up are free to watch: Free to watch. No payment, no card, just a quick Google sign-in. These recordings show how we teach, not the exact syllabus of this course. Some classes are in English and some in Hindi; everyone follows at their own pace. Watch a class end to end, like you are in it. Sessions are interactive and each moment builds on the last.

**Question:** Can I enroll without a live demo?

**Answer:** Yes. Choose a plan on this page and enrol directly. A demo is optional: if you would like to see a full class with a mentor first, book a Priority Demo, a live class of about 45 to 60 minutes. Questions: WhatsApp +91 91233 66161 or email connect@modernagecoders.com.
