## 11 Plus Maths Preparation UK

*The maths half of the 11 plus, taught properly over eight months, so test day tests the child and not the preparation.*

11 plus maths does not go beyond the national curriculum; what makes it hard is that it asks Key Stage 2 mathematics at speed, in unfamiliar wording, against children who have often prepared for years. This 8-month live course covers the full ground in a teaching order that builds: number fluency first, because a child who hesitates over 7 times 8 loses time on every question that follows; then fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion, early algebra, geometry and measures, and data. The final two months turn knowledge into test performance: multi-step word problems, timing strategy, multiple-choice technique, and a run of practice papers in the style of GL Assessment, which now sets the tests for most grammar schools in England.

We are honest about the landscape. CEM stopped producing its familiar paper-based 11 plus tests in 2023 and most regions that used them have moved to GL, so we do not sell CEM prep as if those regional tests still run. Families targeting independent schools that use the online ISEB Pre-Tests or their own papers get practice aligned to those formats. And we are honest about outcomes: good preparation raises a child's chances and steadies their nerves, but grammar school places are competitive and nobody can promise one.

## Faqs

**Question:** Which 11 plus test formats does the course prepare for?

**Answer:** Most grammar schools in England now use tests from GL Assessment, so GL-style multiple-choice papers with separate answer sheets are our default format practice. Some areas set their own papers, such as the CSSE in Essex, and many independent schools use the online ISEB Pre-Tests or their own exams. Tell us your target schools at the start and we align the paper phase to the formats your child will actually sit. The maths syllabus underneath is the same in every case.

**Question:** Do you offer CEM preparation?

**Answer:** We prepare children for the tests that exist now, and the familiar paper-based CEM regional tests are not among them: CEM stopped producing them in 2023, and most areas that used them have moved to GL Assessment. CEM continues as an online product used mainly by some independent schools, and if a target school uses it we practise accordingly. What we will not do is sell CEM-branded preparation as if the old regional tests still run, because they do not.

**Question:** Will this course get my child into grammar school?

**Answer:** No course can honestly promise that, and you should be wary of any that does. Grammar school places are competitive, pass marks move with each year's cohort, and admission can also depend on catchment and oversubscription rules that have nothing to do with maths. What preparation genuinely does is make sure the test measures your child's ability rather than their unfamiliarity with the format. We commit to full syllabus coverage, honest monthly reporting, and a clear readiness picture before test day.

**Question:** When should we start preparing, and is 8 months enough?

**Answer:** Most families start in Year 5, and this course is built for that: eight months starting in the autumn or spring of Year 5 finishes shortly before tests sat at the start of Year 6. Eight months is enough for a child with sound school maths; it allows the syllabus to be taught rather than crammed, with two full months left for timed practice. Children starting later can still join, but we compress honestly and tell you what the shorter runway does and does not allow.

**Question:** What maths is actually on the 11 plus?

**Answer:** Nothing beyond the national curriculum, mostly content taught up to the end of Year 5, since tests are sat early in Year 6. The difficulty comes from presentation and pace: multi-step word problems, unfamiliar wording, and timing that punishes slow arithmetic. That is why this course spends its first two months on number fluency and its last two on technique and timed papers, with the syllabus taught properly in between. Calculators are not allowed, so everything is built for pencil and paper.

**Question:** Does the course cover verbal reasoning, English and non-verbal reasoning too?

**Answer:** No, this course is the maths paper only, taught deeply rather than four subjects taught thinly. Many families pair it with their own English and reasoning practice or another provider for those papers. We would rather be excellent at one quarter of the 11 plus than mediocre at all of it, and we will always tell you honestly whether your child's remaining preparation time is better spent on maths or elsewhere.

**Question:** How much homework is there, and will my child burn out?

**Answer:** Two to three hours a week: a short daily number routine of about ten minutes plus one or two problem sets, rising to a weekly practice paper in the final month. We taper deliberately before test day rather than piling on, because a tired nine-year-old tests worse than a fresh one. If homework is causing tears, we want to know, and we adjust the load; an 11 plus campaign that makes a child hate maths has failed even if the result is a pass.

**Question:** You are based in India. Can you really prepare a child for a UK exam?

**Answer:** The 11 plus maths syllabus is published, the test formats are public, and our 11 plus teachers work with UK materials, GL-style papers and UK curriculum terminology throughout.
