# CBSE Computational Thinking for Classes 3-5: what your child actually learns

The short answerFor Classes 3, 4 and 5, CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum teaches computational thinking - decomposition, patterns, algorithms and logical sequencing - for 50 hours a year, integrated into Mathematics. It is not AI. Artificial intelligence begins in Class 6. If you have seen 'CBSE AI from Class 3', that is a misreading of the official handbooks, which are titled 'Computational Thinking'.

## At this age, it is computational thinking - not AI

A lot of parents searched for 'CBSE AI class 3' after the news, so let us clear it up directly: **there is no artificial intelligence in the Class 3-5 curriculum.** CBSE's official handbooks for these classes are titled 'Computational Thinking', full stop. AI literacy is deliberately held back until Class 6, when children are old enough for the ideas.

That is the right call. Computational thinking is the foundation AI later sits on, and it is genuinely valuable on its own.

## What your child actually does (50 hours a year)

Across Classes 3-5, embedded in Mathematics and The World Around Us, children practise:

- **Decomposition**: breaking a big problem into small, do-able steps.
- **Pattern recognition**: spotting what repeats, and using it.
- **Algorithms**: writing a clear, ordered set of instructions that always works.
- **Logical sequencing**: putting steps in the order that actually gets the result.

CBSE allocates 50 hours a year to this, and keeps it low-tech and activity-driven, delivered within existing periods. No computer or special software is required at this stage.

## How to give a curious 8-to-11-year-old more

If your child races through the school activities and wants more, the honest next step at this age is not 'AI tools', because most of those set 13 as their own minimum age anyway. It is block coding and computational-thinking projects that turn the same ideas into things they build.
